The objective of this study is to carry out a demographic and clinical characterization of the fractures in children treated in two hospitals of different regions of Colombia.</p></div><div><h3>Materials and methods</h3><p>Descriptive, retrospective study by searching for ICD-10 diagnosis codes and reviewing medical records. Univariate data analysis, expressing the quantitative variables in absolute values and measures of central tendency and the qualitative variables in tables of frequencies and percentages.</p></div><div><h3>Results</h3><p>The annual incidence of pediatric fractures in the regional hospital was 61.34 / 10,000 and in the pediatric hospital 9.16 / 10,000, with the highest peaks around school holidays. Male sex predominated, left laterality and the age group most affected was 4-7 years. Fractures of the distal radius, supracondylar humerus, and diaphyseal ulna and radius were the most frequent. Falls from standing height were the most common injury mechanism, yet traffic accidents were a major cause of fractures in the regional hospital. Conservative management was the most used.</p></div><div><h3>Discussion</h3><p>There is agreement with other studies regarding the predominance of males, falls, and upper limb involvement in pediatric fractures. However, there are some differences depending onthe time of year and geographic region. Results of both procedures are presented, exposing complications of the first case related to radiocarpal subluxation and none in the second case. Both cases exhibit adequate functionality.</p></div><div><h3>Conclusion</h3><p>GCT Campanacci III in the distal radius represents a surgical challenge for limb preservation considering local invasion and high risk of recurrence. Vedoya, Germán Garabano, Agustín Catan, Joaquín Rodriguez, Hernán Del-Sel","doi":"10.1016/j.rccot.2022.04.004","DOIUrl":"https://doi.org/10.1016/j.rccot.2022.04.004","url":null,"abstract":"<div><h3>Purpose</h3><p>This retrospective level 2 analysis evaluates the prosthesis type selected in our department for the treatment of the severe valgus knee and proposes a new classification for the valgus knee osteoarthritis.</p></div><div><h3>Material and methods</h3><p>A total knee arthroplasty with a constrained or hinged knee prosthesis was performed in 28 valgus knees. The average follow-up was 6.2 years. A new classification that considerates the ligament sufficiency status was developed in order to relate the different knee types with the different type of eventually needed implants.</p></div><div><h3>Results</h3><p>Constrained prosthesis was used in 17 patients with an attenuated medial collateral ligament, and a rotating hinge in 11 patients with incompetent medial collateral ligament and/or recurvatum. The postoperatory Knee Society Score was of 85 points. The valgus knee was classified in 5 types considering the knee valgus deformity, the ligament sufficiency and joint stability and wear.</p></div><div><h3>Discussion</h3><p>The classification proposed clearly defines the ligament status and valgus knee types, and it seems to be a comprehensive tool to select the appropriate prosthesis. Constrained prosthesis must be used on patients who present coronal instability with attenuated medial collateral ligament. The purpose of this study is to compare the use of two deep closure techniques (barbed suture vs. braided absorbable suture) and superficial (staples vs. polypropylene suture) in TKR.</p></div><div><h3>Materials and methods</h3><p>An observational retrospective study was carried out in 240 patients. Those individuals were excluded with previous open knee surgery, arthrofibrosis, patients who underwent TKR due to tumor lesions or a follow up for less than one year.</p></div><div><h3>Results</h3><p>The skin was closed in 176 patients with staples and in 64 patients with Prolene®. Deep closure was performed with Stratafix® in 164 patients and with Vicryl® in 75 patients. Also, complications related to the wound and functionality were recorded in the first postoperative year. Superficial infection for closure with prolene presented an HR in favor of 2.6 with a confidence interval (CI) of 95%<!--> <!-->=<!--> <!-->1.1–6.2; <em>p</em> <!-->=<!--> <!-->0.029 and in deep closure a HR in favor of Vicryl® of 0.22, 95% CI<!--> <!-->=<!--> <!-->0.96–5.8; <em>p</em> <!-->=<!--> <!-->0.05</p></div><div><h3>Conclusions</h3><p>This study demonstrated a significant increase in the incidence of superficial infection after TKR when deep closure is performed with barbed sutures and superficial closure with polypropylene suture. The correct choice of the receiving nerve was confirmed by posterior approach.</p></div><div><h3>Results</h3><p>An adequate dissection of the first motor branch of the radial nerve of the axillary nerve and of the anterior branch of the Axillary Nerve was achieved, The origin of the motor branch was found on average at 3.8<!--> <!-->mm (+/−7.3<!--> <!-->mm) distal to the superior border of the latissimus dorsi tendon. The axillary nerve was found 11.3<!--> <!-->mm (+/−2.13<!--> <!-->mm) cephalad to the upper border of the latissimus dorsi and 3.05<!--> <!-->mm (+/−1.3<!--> <!-->mm) distal to the teres minor. A tensionless coaptation was obtained in all cases.</p></div><div><h3>Conclusion</h3><p>Neurotization of the axillary nerve with the first branch of the radial nerve was successfully achieved through the axillary approach. This study presents a review on PFPS treatment modalities.</p></div><div><h3>Materials and methods</h3><p>State of the art review on the treatment of PFPS with grades of recommendation. Active and passive conservative interventions are reviewed, as well as surgical alternatives.</p></div><div><h3>Results</h3><p>Hip and lower-limb muscle strengthening and stretching are active interventions that provide long-lasting benefits. Passive interventions include patellofemoral joint bracing, kinesiotaping and foot orthoses, and are considered useful coadjuvants to active interventions, with quick relief for patients but usually in the short term. Description of a technique","authors":"Rodrigo Alfonso Vargas-Lara , Rafael Fernando Serrano-Sánchez , Dick Jonathan Rozo-Avellaneda","doi":"10.1016/j.rccot.2022.04.001","DOIUrl":"https://doi.org/10.1016/j.rccot.2022.04.001","url":null,"abstract":"<div><p>Shoulder fracture is one of the most frequently treated injuries in trauma centers, with an overall incidence that appears to have increased in recent years, ranging from 219 to 419 cases per 100 000 person-years.</p><p>In clinical terms, shoulder girdle injury is difficult to diagnose due to the close relationship between the shoulder and the chest, and imaging identification of the different types of injuries can be challenging.</p><p>In this context, X-rays are the most appropriate method and the cornerstone of the initial approach to shoulder trauma, and at least 3 views are recommended: true anteroposterior view (AP), axial or axillary projection or modified axial projection (Velpeau view), and lateral scapula shoulder or Y view.
