Emotional intelligence positively affects the level of performance in the workplace. This study was designed to examine whether a relationship exists between emotional intelligence (EI) and sales professionals’ performance. Conducted in Puerto Rico, which has a similar economic and market structure to the United States, the study used a Hispanic and Latin American cultural background that provided a diverse environment for research. Data analysis indicated that EI had a statistically significant relationship to successful sales performance; the correlation between the variables was moderate and not as strong as proposed in existing literature. The study included moderating variables of age, gender, and experience that did not yield significant variation to the original result. EI is not a determining factor, but EI significantly relates to sales success in Puerto Rico.
","PeriodicalId":100827,"journal":{"name":"Journal of Psychological Issues in Organizational Culture","volume":"5 3","pages":"6-39"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2014-10-28","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"https://sci-hub-pdf.com/10.1002/jpoc.21153","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"82662726","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Organizations that fail to adjust their culture to meet the challenges of cross-generational workforces face employee retention issues, disruption of knowledge transfer, and a reduced competitive advantage. This qualitative grounded theory study examined how a hierarchical organization leads multigenerational workforce members and how they attract, motivate, and retain Millennials, defined as those born after 1980. The resulting subthemes enabled the development of a theoretical model that highlights the integral nature of executives, managers, and human resource professionals in addressing multigenerational conflict and attracting, motivating, and retaining Millennials while focusing on performance success. The model, which may be generalizable to diverse organizations, depicts specific actions for each of these key stakeholders and also discusses Millennials’ responsibilities for their own success in the workplace.
","PeriodicalId":100827,"journal":{"name":"Journal of Psychological Issues in Organizational Culture","volume":"5 3","pages":"68-84"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2014-10-28","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"https://sci-hub-pdf.com/10.1002/jpoc.21154","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"73129267","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

This qualitative study examined the lived experience of how out, White, gay males have successfully navigated the presidential search process. The study utilizes the framework of social dominance theory, queer theory, and co-cultural theory in exploring the historical and current environment for lesbian and gays within the United States. This national study utilized a qualitative, phenomenological approach. Semistructured interviews were conducted with 10 participants. Study findings included: (a) most gay men have a nontraditional career pathway to the presidency; (b) while gay men are resilient in overcoming the dominant heteronormative culture impacts, dominant culture beliefs continue to play a significant role in the search process; (c) gay men believe that being out during the search process speaks to their integrity and character; and (d) gay men strategically utilize two communication approaches when communicating with the dominant culture in an effort to assess if the heteronormative environment will be affirming.
","PeriodicalId":100827,"journal":{"name":"Journal of Psychological Issues in Organizational Culture","volume":"5 3","pages":"40-67"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2014-10-28","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"https://sci-hub-pdf.com/10.1002/jpoc.21155","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"82433314","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

PLCs, which developed out of business models of learning communities, neglect to incorporate organizational learning within the PLC culture. This mixed-methods study investigated one large urban middle school's PLC implementation. Quantitative data consisted of 52 participant responses from the School Professional Staff as Learning Community Questionnaire (SPSLCQ). Qualitative data consisted of one-on-one interviews. Data analysis revealed dissatisfaction with PLC experiences. This article identifies strategies that integrate operational and conceptual learning mental models for restructuring implementation of PLCs to increase the culture of collaboration between schools and districts and to enhance professional learning behaviors district-wide. To effectuate successful PLC cultures, districts should engage in professional behaviors focused on five critical practices: ownership in decision making, reculturing the organization and professional staff, establishing organizational learning theory protocols, evaluating organizational learning theory practices, and creating a sustainability plan. Adherence to these five practices would institute operational and conceptual learning consistent with organizational learning theory and create a culture of professional learning district-wide. Transference of this model is plausible for all organizations that seek to build cultures of success.
","PeriodicalId":100827,"journal":{"name":"Journal of Psychological Issues in Organizational Culture","volume":"5 3","pages":"85-99"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2014-10-28","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"https://sci-hub-pdf.com/10.1002/jpoc.21152","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"91183733","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

At a high level, virtual group coaching can be defined as exploring the coaching process with a group of individuals who are being coached by a professional coach utilizing the vehicle of group process to accomplish the goals and objectives of the individual. Currently, there exist no guidelines or standards for group coaching regarding approach or educational curriculum. As the field of coaching matures and evolves, investigating and gaining an understanding of what coaches need to know in order to effectively coach a virtual group will be not only helpful but necessary.
