Capparè","doi":"10.1016/j.ios.2012.01.003","DOIUrl":"10.1016/j.ios.2012.01.003","url":null,"abstract":"<div><h3>Objectives</h3><p>The aim of this study is to carry out a review of the bone micro-structure adaptive mechanisms and function in relation to dental applications.</p></div><div><h3>Materials and methods</h3><p>The relationship between bone micro-anatomical aspects and history of theoretical bone physiology has been evaluated in detail.</p></div><div><h3>Results</h3><p>The modern theory of the physiology of bone is consistent with the integration among regional acceleratory phenomenon, Utah paradigm, and mechanostat hypothesis. Bone modeling and remodeling can respond to pleiotropic stimuli, including quantum concept of cell activation and dynamic loading. Finally, in the case of implants inserted in augmented bone with xenograft not completely resorbable biomaterials, a reduced mechanical competence of the peri-implant bone should be taken into account.</p></div><div><h3>Conclusions</h3><p>The static load, within the limits of proportionality, does not affect bone resorption. To facilitate the “local acceleratory phenomenon” after implant bed preparation and during implant placement the blood clot should be preserved by any irrigation procedure. Baldoni","doi":"10.1016/j.ios.2011.03.002","DOIUrl":"https://doi.org/10.1016/j.ios.2011.03.002","url":null,"abstract":"<div><h3>Objectives</h3><p>The purpose of this trial was to evaluate the effects of Nd:Yag laser irradiation on proliferation and differentiation of mesenchymal stem cells (MSCs) induced to differentiate into osteoblasts.</p></div><div><h3>Materials and methods</h3><p>MSCs were isolated from adult human bone marrow and cultured in complete medium (α-MEM). The cells were subsequently cultured in osteogenic medium, seeded into three-dimensional collagen scaffolds, and incubated. We used six scaffolds, equally divided into three groups: two groups were irradiated with Nd:Yag laser at different power levels, and the third was left untreated (control group). Cells were specifically stained and assessed at 7 and 14 days.</p></div><div><h3>Results</h3><p>After 7 days, proliferation in the laser-treated scaffolds was increased with respect to the control scaffold. After 14 days, however, laser irradiation does not appear to have any further effect on cell proliferation. Sammartino","doi":"10.1016/j.ios.2011.05.004","DOIUrl":"10.1016/j.ios.2011.05.004","url":null,"abstract":"<div><h3>Objective</h3><p>The aim of this report is to illustrate a method for expanding atrophic alveolar ridges and to analyze its advantages and disadvantages.</p></div><div><h3>Materials and methods</h3><p>Ridge thickness is increased with the aid of a series of screw expanders-condensers, which do not remove bone from the implant site when its thickness is reduced, but they facilitate placement of appropriately sized implants. The case presented is a patient with moderately severe horizontal atrophy of the mandibular ridge.</p></div><div><h3>Results</h3><p>This technique allowed us to insert an appropriate implant after sufficient expansion had been achieved. The empty cavity is sometimes lined with a thin layer of connective tissue. During surgical exploration, the cavity fills with blood and the clot that later forms results in full resolution of the cyst.</p></div><div><h3>Matherials and methods</h3><p>We describe a traumatic pseudocyst that developed in the jaw of a young patient, which was treated with surgical curettage of the cyst cavity and placement of a platelet-rich fibrin (PRF) graft.</p></div><div><h3>Results</h3><p>One year after surgery, the follow-up examination revealed complete resolution of the lesion with formation of new trabecular bone.</p></div><div><h3>Conclusions</h3><p>Surgical curettage of the cyst cavity leads to complete healing of mandibular bone cysts.
