Expanders with valve and idrogel self-inflating were identified. Features, advantages, disadvantages, and directions to use them were described.</p></div><div><h3>Results</h3><p>Several animal studies suggested a sub-periosteal placement of the device, whereas only one study on human suggested an over-periosteal position. Bressan","doi":"10.1016/j.ios.2012.07.001","DOIUrl":"10.1016/j.ios.2012.07.001","url":null,"abstract":"<div><h3>Objectives</h3><p>Analyze the guidelines reported in the literature for the use of pre-operative radiologic exams in dental implantology.</p></div><div><h3>Materials and methods</h3><p>Articles regarding the radiologic surveys used in the evaluation of patients with prosthetic implants, published in Medline<sup>®</sup> and/or Embase<sup>®</sup> after 2000, were selected for analysis. Articles which considered only the accuracy and/or the radiation dose related to the use of these diagnostic methodologies (Endo-oral X-ray, orthopantomography, cross-sectional imaging) were not considered. Only the articles that evaluated, in addition to the accuracy and the radiation dose related to the radiologic examination, also their indication of use were included. A textbook reporting the inclusion criteria was also included.</p></div><div><h3>Results</h3><p>The searches with the keywords “CT dental implants”, “CT dental implant orthopantomography”, “dental implant radiography guidelines” and “dental implant radiology guidelines” yield 853, 106, 27 and 29 results, respectively. According to the inclusion criteria 17 articles were selected for further analysis.</p></div><div><h3>Conclusions</h3><p>No precise guidelines on the selection and evaluation of pre-operative radiologic exams to use in implantology were found. While some authors reserve the use of cross-sectional imaging to selected cases, others advice its use in all cases due to the high amount of information that can be obtained on both the morphology of the bone as well as its connections with other anatomical structures. The surgical guides were bone supported, mucosal or teeth supported. At the end of the surgical phase, a post-op CT scan was taken to evaluate the discrepancies between the virtual and the clinical implant position.</p></div><div><h3>Results</h3><p>The mean values regarding the 3D implant position are in line with the mean values reported in the literature. Bone supported and mucosal supported guides are more precise than dental or dental-mucosal supported guides, however, the differences are not statistically significant. Discrepancies at the implant apex, at platform level and at the angle between virtual and clinical position were evaluated by superimposing a pre-op CT scan to a post-op CT scan.</p></div><div><h3>Conclusions</h3><p>The accuracy of the guided surgery system used is in line with the data of the literature. A good diagnostic phase is recommended and it is very important to plan the implant position with a safety distance from the anatomical structures of at least 2<!--> <!-->mm. In most cases, surgery is performed via a transoral approach and the fistula is closed with local flaps, but the results are often unsatisfactory. This case report shows that proper management of these fistulas depends largely on the functional integrity of the ostiomeatal complex.</p></div><div><h3>Materials and methods</h3><p>We present the case of a patient with an oroantral fistula. Several transoral attempts to close the fistula had failed. Such assessment needs a cephalometric 3D evaluation whose interpretation allows to formulate a correct diagnosis and an adequate treatment plan. The aim of this paper is to introduce the scientific community with a 3D cephalometric model for diagnostic purposes in orthodontics, maxillo-facial and implant surgery and to illustrate the potential of the latest 3D technologies.</p></div><div><h3>Materials and methods</h3><p>To develop this cephalometric analysis, the intermaxillary skeletal relationships of 30 patients to whom a CBCT examination was prescribed for diagnostic purposes are presented. An approval of the Ethical Committee was not requested since the clinicians did not do anything different from a normal routine case in which a CBCT examination is requested instead of multiple 2D radiologic examinations. The analyses have been studied using a dedicated software (Materialise Simplant OMS, Leuven, Belgium).</p></div><div><h3>Results</h3><p>The radiation dose and the exposure time influence the quality of the examination. Comparing CBCT to conventional CT scans, CBCT could become the examination of choice to lower the radiation dose. It is easily accessible and has an advantageous cost-benefit ratio.</p></div><div><h3>Conclusions</h3><p>It can thus be concluded that our proposal of 3D cephalometric analysis can be defined a useful diagnostic tool. When involving the maxillo-facial area, tongue is the most affected organ.</p></div><div><h3>Materials and methods</h3><p>The excision of tumors was performed using a potassium–titanium–phosphate (KTP) laser, also known as doubled frequency neodimium:yttrium–aluminium–garnet (Nd:YAG).</p></div><div><h3>Results</h3><p>In both cases an excellent healing was achieved without relapses. A histological diagnosis was possible in both cases.
