This phenomenon is well tolerated only in healthy sinus where ventilation and muco-ciliary transport are intact. Berengo","doi":"10.1016/j.ios.2011.02.003","DOIUrl":"10.1016/j.ios.2011.02.003","url":null,"abstract":"<div><h3>Objectives</h3><p>To describe the effects of multimodal therapy in patients with rhabdomyosarcoma (RMS) of the head and neck and to evaluate the possibilities for their treatment.</p></div><div><h3>Materials and methods</h3><p>We describe the surgical extraction of a retained canine found in a patient who had received multimodal therapy for RMS and was currently disease-free. Panoramic radiography showed the inclusion of tooth 23 and the absence of root maturation involving all elements in the front and lateral sectors of the maxilla. After consultation with the orthodontist, the decision was made to proceed with the extraction of tooth 23 (instead of attempting surgical-orthodontic repositioning) to prevent reabsorption of the teeth in the arch.</p></div><div><h3>Results and conclusions</h3><p>The postoperative course was normal, and there was no evidence of wound dehiscence or bone sequestration. In a previous report, we analyzed the capacity of Y-TZP to withstand maximum loading (static resistance) and the repeated application of loads lesser than those that provoke fracture (fatigue resistance). The aim of this study was to evaluate the adhesion between Y-TZP and its ceramic support (shear resistance).</p></div><div><h3>Materials and methods</h3><p>To assess this characteristic, we developed a new testing protocol to be used with specially designed cylindrical samples with ceramic covering on a zirconia base. The research was carried out in two phases: the aim of the first was to identify the approach that produced the best adhesion; the second phase aimed at identifying the mechanical and/or physical mechanisms responsible for the zirconia/ceramic adhesion.</p></div><div><h3>Results</h3><p>In the first phase, we found that the surface finish of the zirconia was the sole factor that influenced final adhesion. Our objective in this report is to analyze a synergic approach to the management of furcation defects that involves endodontic-surgical and guided tissue regeneration-based periodontal procedures.</p></div><div><h3>Materials and methods</h3><p>The patient was a 30-year-old woman with no systemic disease. The synergic approach was used to treat an inter-radicular lesion involving tooth 4.6 (vertical probing depth: 5<!--> <!-->mm; horizontal probing indicative of grade I furcation).</p></div><div><h3>Results and conclusions</h3><p>This case illustrates the importance of pre-treatment diagnostic work-up and careful consideration of treatment options to guarantee stable results in time. Supportive periodontal therapy and a good patient compliance with protocols for maintaining oral hygiene play key roles. The purpose of this article is to provide a literature review and assess the effectiveness of two different surgical treatments for this condition: one involving marsupialization of Wharton's duct on the floor of the mouth, the other involving the use of a Teflon cannula to maintain the patency of the duct.</p></div><div><h3>Materials and methods</h3><p>The two patients included were a 67-year-old woman who presented with fever and pain and swelling in the right submandibular region and a 51-year-old man, whose only symptom was the sensation of a foreign body in the floor of the mouth. Radiological examinations confirmed the presence of giant salivary gland stones, which were removed.
