Catalytic ammonia breakdown provides a CO<sub>2</sub>-free hydrogen-generating method, but high temperatures, catalyst deactivation, and expense restrict its practicality. This study covers important aspects of ammonia decomposition catalysts, including Ru-, Ni-, and Co-based systems supported by carbon, Al<sub>2</sub>O<sub>3</sub>, and perovskite oxides. To develop structure–activity connections and identify rate-limiting stages under various operating regimes, thermodynamic, kinetic, and fundamental reaction processes are examined. Ru-based catalysts, especially those supported on conductive carbons and tailored perovskites, are standards for low-temperature activity, but their high cost and stability prevent large-scale application. Combining Ni-based catalysts with Al<sub>2</sub>O<sub>3</sub> or basic perovskite supports offers a good balance between activity, cost, and commercial practicality, making them the dominant non-noble alternatives. Due to strong metal–support interactions and alternate reaction routes, Co-based catalysts in perovskite formulations seem promising despite being inherently less active. Support chemistry, promoters, metal dispersion, and oxygen vacancies are discussed, along with low-temperature operation and scale-up problems and research prospects.</p>","PeriodicalId":10046,"journal":{"name":"Chemical record","volume":"26 9","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":8.9,"publicationDate":"2026-09-22","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"148351105","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":2,"RegionCategory":"化学","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

In these transformations, substrate excitation or electron donor–acceptor (EDA) interactions directly activate O2 through energy transfer, single-electron transfer, hydrogen-atom transfer, or EDA-mediated pathways, enabling diverse oxidative reactivity without external photocatalysts or stoichiometric oxidants. Despite rapid growth of this field, these reactions have largely been discussed as isolated transformations rather than as a unified oxidative platform governed by common photoactivation principles. This review provides a unified mechanistic and operational framework for catalyst-free aerobic photooxidation. Reported systems are organized into six major reaction classes, establishing recurring relationships between activation modes, oxygen-derived intermediates, and oxidative reactivity. The review further discusses sustainability and operational implications arising from solvent choice and reaction conditions. While early developments were strongly influenced by straightforward analogies to natural enzymes, recent advances demonstrate that inspiration from biological catalysis can extend far beyond direct mimicry. This review covers representative examples in which chemists reinterpret, broaden, or strategically depart from enzymatic logic to achieve new reactivity and improved catalytic performance. We first examine organocatalysts derived from enzymatic cofactors, including thiamine-inspired carbene catalysts and pyridoxal-based systems, whose functions have been adapted for transformations not observed in nature. We then discuss catalysts engineered for efficient operation in aqueous media, followed by chemoenzymatic cascade processes. Over the past decade, high-entropy materials (HEMs) have emerged as a transformative materials-design paradigm that addresses these challenges by shifting from single-principal-element optimization to entropy-driven stabilization of multicomponent, highly disordered solid solutions. This review critically traces the evolution of functional HEMs from their metallurgical origins to their growing prominence in energy-related ceramic and ionic systems. We elucidate the thermodynamic foundations of the field, examining how the four core effects-high-entropy stabilization, severe lattice distortion, sluggish diffusion, and the cocktail effect-translate into tangible performance enhancements in electrochemical applications. Adopting a structure-centric framework, we highlight recent breakthroughs across key lattice families, including the suppression of cation segregation in high-entropy perovskite cathodes for solid oxide fuel cells, the expansion of redox windows in high-entropy layered double hydroxides for supercapacitors, and the precise electronic tuning of active sites in high-entropy spinels for nitrate reduction electrocatalysis.
