Our objective was to evaluate the percentage of patients diagnosed with osteoporosis according to these new criteria in a population of T2DM patients, and to analyse if there were differences compared to the WHO criteria for osteoporosis.</p></div><div><h3>Material and methods</h3><p>Cross-sectional study including 78 T2DM patients. Bone mineral density (BMD) was evaluated by dual X-Ray absorptiometry (DXA, Hologic QDR 4500). The percentage of patients with osteoporosis was determined using the WHO criteria (T-score <2.5) and also according to the new criteria. Data were processed and analysed with SPSS 15.0.</p></div><div><h3>Results</h3><p>Mean age was 57.8 years (57.8±6.4). According to the WHO criteria, 19% of patients had lumbar osteoporosis, 2.6% osteoporosis in femoral neck (FN), and 4% in total femur (TF). {"title":"¿Son fiables los medidores de glucemia capilar?","authors":"Maria Luisa Casas Oñate, Dolores Montoya Martínez","doi":"10.1016/j.avdiab.2012.09.003","DOIUrl":"https://doi.org/10.1016/j.avdiab.2012.09.003","url":null,"abstract":"<div><h3>Objective</h3><p>To assess the reliability of the portable blood glucose meters most used in a Health Area.</p></div><div><h3>Methods</h3><p>A diagnostic test analysis was conducted in the Zone VIII Health Centre, Albacete Health Area. A total of 50 diabetic patients with different treatments, and who came to the Centre to perform an analytical control, were included in the study. Capillary blood samples were measured on the seven glucometers to study. The results were compared with venous blood tested in the reference laboratory of the Albacete General University Hospital. For the descriptive analysis, means and percentages were used, and the Student's t test for paired data and standard deviation for analytical comparisons of the means, with 95% confidence intervals and <em>P</em> <!--><<!--> <!-->.05.</p></div><div><h3>Results</h3><p>Of the 50 subjects who were included in the study, 48% were female, and the mean age was 59 years. The glucose readings ranged from 23<!--> <!-->mg/dL to 292<!--> <!-->mg/dL and with haematocrits between 36.4% and 53.8%. Hyperglycemia increases hospital morbidity and mortality, the impact being greater in patients not known to be diabetics.</p><p>The effect of intensive treatment of hyperglycemia in non-critical hospitalized patients is unclear, the only proven benefit is the reduction in the risk of infection.</p><p>The current recommendation is to keep blood glucose levels <140<!--> <!-->mg/dL, and to use the basal-bolus insulin therapy for the glycemic control during hospitalization. Although the fear of inducing hypoglycemia is one of the main causes of poor glycemic control, the evidence of its impact on hospital morbidity and mortality is very limited. {"title":"Factores organizativos y profesionales asociados con la prescripción correcta de glibenclamida para el manejo de la diabetes mellitus tipo 2","authors":"Luis Durán-Arenas , Guillermo Salinas-Escudero , Adriana Zubieta-Zavala , Rodrigo Zendejas-Villanueva , Jorge Zendejas-Villanueva","doi":"10.1016/j.avdiab.2012.09.001","DOIUrl":"10.1016/j.avdiab.2012.09.001","url":null,"abstract":"<div><h3>Introduction</h3><p>In México, there is a high proportion of patients with uncontrolled type 2 diabetes mellitus (DM2), as well as multiple problems in the quality of prescribing in first contact medical care, despite the recommendations of the regulations, evidence-based guidelines, and international reports.</p></div><div><h3>Objective</h3><p>To analyze the factors associated with good prescribing of treatment for DM2.</p></div><div><h3>Material and methods</h3><p>Survey research methods with a random multi-stage cluster sampling. Two surveys were conducted with patients and physicians to assess prescription patterns in hospitals and ambulatory care clinics. A set of bivariate logistic regressions were carried out to assess the association of the prescription patterns with organizational and medical factors, and multiple logistic regression models were finally fitted.</p></div><div><h3>Results</h3><p>A total of 267 physicians were evaluated, of whom 39,62% were classified as prescribing correctly.
