Young female athletes are important for ensuring the sustainable development of the sport. However, no bibliometric analysis has yet focused specifically on youth women’s soccer. This study aims to fill this gap. A comprehensive search was conducted using the Web of Science database to retrieve scientific articles related to youth women’s soccer, analysing titles, abstracts, and keywords without year restrictions. Results show that research in this field has increased steadily, particularly since 2015. Authors such as Stacey Emmonds, research groups in the USA, and journals including the Scandinavian Journal of Medicine and Science in Sports are leading contributions. Key topics include injury prevention, physical performance, and talent development. {"title":"Comparison of complex-contrast versus French contrast training on steroid hormones and physical performance of tier 3 male field hockey players: A randomized controlled trial","authors":"Ibnu Noufal Kambitta Valappil, Masilamani Elayaraja, Gavoutamane Vasanthi","doi":"10.1016/j.apunsm.2025.100508","DOIUrl":"10.1016/j.apunsm.2025.100508","url":null,"abstract":"<div><h3>Background</h3><div>As a high-intensity, intermittent sport, field hockey demands optimal muscular power, speed, agility, and hormonal readiness to sustain competitive performance.</div></div><div><h3>Objective</h3><div>This randomized controlled trial compared the effects of Complex-Contrast Training (CCT) and French Contrast Training (FCT) on steroid hormone responses and selected physical performance parameters in tier 3 male field hockey players.</div></div><div><h3>Materials & methods</h3><div>Forty-five players (age: 19.56 ± 1.34 years) were randomly assigned to either a CCT group (<em>n</em> = 15), an FCT group (<em>n</em> = 15), or a regular training group (RTG) (<em>n</em> = 15). Training interventions were conducted thrice weekly for 12 weeks (36 sessions total), each lasting 60 min, following a 2-week familiarization period. Baseline assessment (A1) and 12-week assessment (A2) included serum testosterone (TST) and cortisol (CRSL) concentrations, 50 m sprint time, change of direction speed (CoDs), and countermovement jump (CMJ).</div></div><div><h3>Results</h3><div>Both CCT and FCT groups demonstrated significant improvements in sprint performance (<em>p</em> < 0.001, ⴄ<sup>2</sup>=0.066), and CoDs (<em>p</em> < 0.001, ⴄ<sup>2</sup>=0.117), and CMJ (<em>p</em> < 0.001, ⴄ<sup>2</sup>=0.133), compared to the RTG. TST levels increased significantly in both CCT and FCT (<em>p</em> < 0.001, ⴄ<sup>2</sup>=0.094), with a greater effect observed in the FCT group. CRSL responses indicated a favorable anabolic-catabolic balance post-training (<em>p</em> < 0.001, ⴄ<sup>2</sup>=0.056), particularly in the FCT group. Between-group comparisons revealed that FCT produced superior gains in explosive power and hormonal adaptation, while CCT yielded slightly better improvements in sprint performance.</div></div><div><h3>Conclusions</h3><div>These findings suggest that both training methods are effective for enhancing steroid hormone profiles and performance variables in competitive field hockey players, with FCT offering a marginal advantage for power-oriented adaptations. {"title":"Impact of hormonal contraceptives on exercise physiology and athletic performance across the contraceptive cycle. The influence of exogenous hormones could affect health and athletic performance, besides providing a stable hormonal environment to assess the acute effects of sexual hormones on physiological variables and performance. These potential impacts are critical to guide training strategies for female athletes.</div></div><div><h3>Hypothesis</h3><div>Hormonal contraceptives affect physiological responses and athletic performance in healthy young women and elite athletes. It is hypothesized that during the inactive phase, aerobic and anaerobic exercise, as well as strength, would be superior compared to the active phase.</div></div><div><h3>Materials and Methods</h3><div>Longitudinal observational study with repeated measures exploring physiological responses in five elite athletes, all using hormonal contraceptives. Variables including lactate, heart rate, and power output were evaluated during a submaximal 2000-meter rowing ergometer test, assessed during two phases of the contraceptive cycle. <em>Results</em>: Baseline characteristics were described. No significant differences were observed in physiological variables between the two phases of the hormonal contraceptive cycle.</div></div><div><h3>Conclusions</h3><div>There were no significant differences in performance between active and inactive phases of hormonal contraceptives. Variations in physiological parameters among studies suggest the need for an individualized approach. This paper aims to examine the utilisation and frequency of management strategies in elite football in the areas of analgesia, muscle injury intervention, bone injury, well-being and concussion management.</div></div><div><h3>Methods</h3><div>An online survey was distributed to medical staff working within elite football. This included medical clinicians and non-medical prescribers. Anonymised data were transformed and analysed using SPSS v29.</div></div><div><h3>Results</h3><div>126 completed surveys were eligible for inclusion. 81% worked for teams at National Tier One or above and 85% in the men’s game with 79% based in the UK. On average, 26% of prescriptions were due to clinician-perceived pressure to prescribe. Clinicians in the UK prescribe paracetamol and opiates more frequently (p<0.001) than those from other geographical regions. Non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs are used more frequently in the UK (p=0.022) and selective cyclo-oxygenase-2 inhibitor use is more common in higher tier teams (p<0.001). Use of leucocyte-poor platelet-rich plasma was more frequently used by clinicians outside the UK (p=0.020). No significant differences in prescribing existed between clinicians in men’s and women’s football.</div></div><div><h3>Conclusion</h3><div>Wide variation in prescribing practice exists in the setting of professional football. Thirty-eight patients with isolated ACL injuries were randomized to undergo ACLR using either HT (<em>n</em> = 19) or BTB (<em>n</em> = 19) autografts. All procedures were performed using an anatomic single-bundle arthroscopic technique. Patients were evaluated preoperatively and at 12 months postoperatively using the IKDC score, Rolimeter testing, Lachman and pivot shift tests, hop test, and range of motion. Both groups showed significant improvement in all parameters. The mean IKDC score was 82.6 ± 6.3 in the HT group and 83.2 ± 5.9 in the BTB group. No significant differences were found in knee stability, hop test results, or return-to-sport rates. No complications or graft failures occurred. ACLR using either autograft type yielded comparable outcomes. All participants were subjected to partial sleep deprivation with less than 5 h of sleep before each experimental session. Physical performance was assessed through the countermovement jump (CMJ) and 20m repeated sprint ability (RSA) tests. Physiological measures were maximal heart rate (HRmax), venous lactate concentration (Lac) and rating of perceived exertion (RPE) and were measured before and after the nap. This shortening reduces flexibility and restricts range of motion, which may contribute to functional limitations and increased injury risk.</div></div><div><h3>Materials and Methods</h3><div>A six-week randomized experimental study was conducted to compare the efficacy of the slump stretching technique versus proprioceptive neuromuscular facilitation (PNF) using the hold-relax method in improving hamstring flexibility. A total of 30 participants, selected based on predefined inclusion criteria from a reputed academic institution, were randomly assigned to two groups. Group A received slump stretching, while Group B received PNF hold-relax stretching. Hamstring flexibility was assessed pre- and post-intervention using the Modified Back Saver Sit and Reach (BSSR) test.</div></div><div><h3>Results</h3><div>Post-intervention analysis revealed a statistically significant improvement in hamstring flexibility in both groups. However, Group B (PNF hold-relax) demonstrated a significantly greater mean improvement compared to Group A (slump stretch), with a p-value < 0.001, indicating superior effectiveness.</div></div><div><h3>Conclusions</h3><div>The study findings suggest that the PNF hold-relax stretching technique is more effective than slump stretching in enhancing hamstring flexibility. Maximal oxygen uptake (VO<sub>2</sub>max) was estimated and rating of perceived effort (RPE) after cardio-respiratory testing and peak nasal inspiratory flow (PNIF) were evaluated. To assess the differences between the use of the END and placebo regarding physiological assessment measures and between the PNIF, RPE, and VO<sub>2</sub>max measurements with each of the groups studied, the Student's <em>t</em>-test for paired samples was used. To investigate the existence of a statistical difference in the PNIF and VO<sub>2</sub>max measurements. and RPE when participants used experimental END between the three facial types, Analysis of Variance (ANOVA) with one factor (OneWay) was used. The Wilcoxon test was performed for comparisons between two periods in relation to a variable of interest. All results were considered significant at the 5 % significance level (<em>p</em> < 0.05).</div></div><div><h3>Results</h3><div>The results demonstrated that the use of END provided significant improvements in VO<sub>2</sub>max, an increase in PNIF and a reduction in RPE.
