We examined the association between trust in the president and COVID-19 preventive behaviors in Brazil, Chile, Colombia, and Mexico. We used data from the Collaborative COVID-19 Response Survey by the McDonnell Academy at Washington University in St. Louis (United States), from September 2020 to March 2021. Nonprobabilistic sampling included adult citizens from the four countries. Multivariate negative binomial regression models were applied. The study included 8,125 participants, with Brazil showing the lowest adherence to preventive behaviors (65.5%). Increased adoption of preventive behaviors was linked with ages 18-26 (aIRR = 1.05; 95%CI: 1.01-1.09), 60 or more (aIRR = 1.10; 95%CI: 1.05-1.15), and high socioeconomic status (aIRR = 1.09; 95%CI: 1.05-1.13). Decreased engagement was linked to participants from Brazil (aIRR = 0.74; 95%CI: 0.71-0.78), Mexico (aIRR = 0.95; 95%CI: 0.92-0.99), basic education (aIRR = 0.75; 95%CI: 0.68-0.84), intermediate education (aIRR = 0.88; 95%CI: 0.85-0.91), low socioeconomic status (aIRR = 0.91; 95%CI: 0.87-0.94), lack of concern about contracting COVID-19 (aIRR = 0.93; 95%CI: 0.88-0.98), and poor knowledge about COVID-19 (aIRR = 0.92; 95%CI: 0.88-0.96). No significant association was found between trust in the president and preventive behaviors. Targeted communication, public education, and improved access to reliable information are crucial for fostering preventive behaviors. Public health practitioners should not overly concern themselves with political rhetoric, as our study suggests that trust in political authorities may not systematically affect compliance with directives.</p>","PeriodicalId":9398,"journal":{"name":"Cadernos de saude publica","volume":"41 1","pages":"e00023824"},"PeriodicalIF":1.9,"publicationDate":"2025-02-07","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC11805518/pdf/","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"143398311","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":4,"RegionCategory":"医学","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"OA","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

This longitudinal study was carried out with a population-based sample of 465 mothers and infants from Pelotas. Infants' cognitive, motor, socioemotional, and language developments were assessed by the Bayley Scales of Infant and Toddler Development, third edition. The Brazilian Food Insecurity Scale was used to define food safety/insecurity, which classifies households into four categories: food security or mild, moderate, or severe food insecurity. The results of the adjusted analysis showed that food insecurity only affected motor and socioemotional developments at age 18 months. Each increase in food insecurity score decreased that of motor development by 2.30 points on average (95%CI: -4.31; -0.48) at age 18 months. Similarly, each increase in food insecurity score decreased that of socioemotional development by 4.05 points on average (95%CI: -7.34; -0.76). A qualitative study was conducted with 32 MSM participants, selected on social media. Data was collected by online questionnaires, which included open-ended questions about experiences with Doxy-PEP, access to medications, and interactions with the health care system. Responses were analyzed using the IRaMuTeQ program for descending hierarchical classification and reflective thematic analysis. The results revealed three main categories: (1) access to and management of post-exposure prophylaxis, in which participants reported difficulties in obtaining Doxy-PEP due to prescribing restrictions and lack of information; (2) perceptions and knowledge on risks and prevention, which highlighted a mix of knowledge and misinformation about STIs and prevention strategies; (3) social and behavioral dynamics, demonstrating how social interactions and stigma influence prevention practices. The study also indicated self-medication and drug storage as common practices. The study identified multiple barriers to access and management of Doxy-PEP among MSM in Brazil, influenced by individual, social, and programmatic factors. This study aimed to investigate the temporal trend of fruit and vegetable consumption among Brazilian adults (≥ 18 years) residing in 26 Brazilian capitals and the Federal District from 2008-2023. A time-series analysis of the Surveillance of Risk and Protective Factors for Chronic Diseases by Telephone Survey (Vigitel) was conducted. Regular (≥ 5 days/week) and recommended (≥ 5 servings/day on ≥ 5 days/week) fruit and vegetable consumption were analyzed for total population and sociodemographic groups. Prais-Winsten regression models were used to identify trends in the entire (2008-2023), initial (2008-2014) and most recent (2015-2023) periods. Regular and recommended consumption remained stable from 2008 to 2023. From 2008 to 2014, regular consumption increased in total population (0.71pp/year) and all sociodemographic groups, except for adults aged 25-34 years. From 2015 to 2023, regular consumption decreased in the total population (-0.56pp/year), mainly among men (-0.70pp/year), adults aged 25-34 years (-0.84pp/year), and with higher schooling (-0.96pp/year). This study aimed to describe children's access to social public policies: lifetime benefit (E60) created in the face of the Zika virus public health emergency (Espin-ZIKV) or Continuous Cash Benefit/Type 87 (BPC/E87). Thus, this study compares the children's access before and after Espin-ZIKV. This was a cross-sectional study, with data extraction and description from the Brazilian Information System on Live Births (SINASC), the Registry of Public Health Events-Microcephaly (Resp-Microcephaly), and the Unified System for Benefits Information (SUIBE), from 2013 to 2021. We describe the E60 that were still active at the time of SUIBE data extraction in May, 2023. We compared the granting of BPC/E87 for microcephaly in 2013 and 2021 (before and after Espin-ZIKV). Of the 20,000,859 live births from 2015-2021, 20,464 suspected cases of CZS were reported in Resp-Microcephaly; 20% of affected patients received some social benefit: 705 received E60 and 3,822 received BPC/E87. The national average of BPC/E87 granted in 2013 for microcephaly was eight for every 100,000 live births (before Espin-ZIKV), while in 2021 it was five BPC/E87 for every 100,000 live births (after Espin-ZIKV) (p < 0.01). We observed 689 children with active E60 (from 3 to 8 years of age), in May, 2023. The study showed low social protection for children with suspected CZS. However, of those who benefited from the E60, 98% had active benefits in 2023, demonstrating the important survival of the benefited children. A reduction in the mean number of BPC/E87 grants for microcephaly without specified cause was observed after Espin-ZIKV.</p>","PeriodicalId":9398,"journal":{"name":"Cadernos de saude publica","volume":"40 12","pages":"e00014624"},"PeriodicalIF":1.9,"publicationDate":"2025-02-07","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC11805514/pdf/","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"143397986","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":4,"RegionCategory":"医学","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"OA","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Unfortunately, research addressing this topic in Latin American countries remains limited. Seeking to bridge this gap, the present study estimated the prevalence of both dating violence victimization and perpetration among high schoolers considering sociodemographic factors, exposure to other forms of violence, and school-related characteristics. A total of 539 students participated in the study selected by means of probabilistic sampling from private and public schools in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. Dating violence was identified using the Conflict in Adolescent Dating Relationships Inventory. Victimization prevalence ranged from 16.7% (sexual) to 94.6% (emotional), whereas perpetration prevalence varied between 9.9% (sexual) and 94.6% (emotional). Boys were more physically victimized (37.2% vs. 24.5%) and perpetrated more sexual abuse (13.7% vs. 6.9%) than girls. Adolescents reporting child abuse, living in violent areas, and those who consumed alcoholic beverages more frequently had greater dating violence prevalence overall. Time is a relevant element in the articulation of complex interdisciplinary work, though it has not been deeply reflected upon in Public Health. The essay revisits historical bases and updates the debate on the social determination of health, highlighting the contributions of Naomar de Almeida Filho and Jaime Breilh - authors whose thoughts primary focus are on the Global South, outside of the North American and Eurocentric hegemony. Complexity, commitment to social transformation, and a decolonizing perspective inspire the intersection between public health, the reflections of Fernand Braudel and Immanuel Wallerstein on the long term and historical capitalism in the modern world-system, and decolonial thought with its concept of coloniality. The Braudelian conception encompasses multiple temporalities and dialectically integrates change and permanence in the long term, while decolonial reflection inserts coloniality into this longue durée. Coloniality is part of the social determination of health, either as a mechanism that produces and reproduces economic, gender, and ethno-racial inequalities and social oppression, or in its epistemological dimension as the coloniality of knowledge behind epidemiological conceptualization. Braudel's longue durée, Wallerstein's world-system, and decolonial thought are contributions to be further explored within health thinking. The epistemological integration of time into epidemiological reflection can reveal erasures and (re)constitute historical contexts and durations whose complexity escapes the fragmented and static view of determinants produced by the Cartesian functionalism of risk factor epidemiology.</p>","PeriodicalId":9398,"journal":{"name":"Cadernos de saude publica","volume":"40 12","pages":"e00035724"},"PeriodicalIF":1.9,"publicationDate":"2025-02-07","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC11805520/pdf/","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"143398198","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":4,"RegionCategory":"医学","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"OA","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The responses of 235 healthcare health care professionals to an electronic questionnaire were used to develop a script for virtually conducted focus groups. In 10 focus groups, 34 professionals from healthcare and management positions from all Brazilian macroregions were included, and the transcripts were thematically analyzed. Healthcare professionals and managers emphasized the need for infrastructure to properly use the markers, pointing to the lack of equipment and connection instabilities as the main barriers. Managers highlighted the possibility of its use by any professional as a facilitator, whereas healthcare professionals positively indicated the structure of the markers. However, participants mentioned the lack of awareness about their importance as a barrier. Despite its slowness, the accessibility of the platforms to register the markers emerged as a facilitator, as did its conditionality with public policies, especially when linked to financial incentives. The focus groups allowed the exchange of strategies, such as continuing education, training for typists, ways to use markers in health care spaces, and expansion of data dissemination. Investment in infrastructure, professional training, and collaboration between PHC teams, with the sharing of strategies, configured crucial factors to strengthen the use of food intake markers.</p>","PeriodicalId":9398,"journal":{"name":"Cadernos de saude publica","volume":"41 1","pages":"e00119224"},"PeriodicalIF":1.9,"publicationDate":"2025-02-07","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC11805526/pdf/","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"143398306","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":4,"RegionCategory":"医学","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"OA","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
