{"title":"Description of air quality and environmental characteristics in primary school classrooms in the Community of Madrid","authors":"Begoña Pérez-Moneo , María Aparicio Rodrigo , Mª Dolores Redondas Marrero , Kevin Sabariego Moreno , María del Mar Barbero Barrera","doi":"10.1016/j.anpede.2025.503792","DOIUrl":"10.1016/j.anpede.2025.503792","url":null,"abstract":"<div><h3>Introduction</h3><div>Air quality in schools is a concern at the European level, and few data have been published on the subject in the Community of Madrid.</div></div><div><h3>Material and methods</h3><div>We conducted a longitudinal descriptive study on the presence and distribution of pollutants in four schools in Madrid selected on account of their location, exposure to traffic and proximity to green areas. We measured pollutants and assessed environmental characteristics in primary school classrooms. We measured pollutants with sensors over five data collection campaigns, each lasting two weeks. The obtained data were analyzed with the R software. We calculated the median, range and percentage of exceedance of recommended thresholds and assessed environmental conditions.</div></div><div><h3>Results</h3><div>We found levels of 2.5 µm particulate matter (PM) above the recommended threshold in 40%–70% of the measurements. Volatile organic compounds (VOCs) exceeded the recommended threshold in April in 41.52% of the measurements. The level of CO<sub>2</sub> exceeded the recommended threshold in three of the campaigns. There was broad variation in ultrafine particles. Temperature, CO<sub>2</sub>, VOCs, PM 1, PM 0.3 and PM 2.5 levels were higher in occupied classrooms. Humidity was positively correlated to PM 0.3, PM 1 and PM 2.5 levels and negatively correlated to ultrafine particle levels.</div></div><div><h3>Conclusions</h3><div>This is the first study to assess indoor pollutants and their concentration in schools in the Madrid region. Analysis of potential diagnostic errors","authors":"Rocío Garcés Cubel , Ruth García Romero , Ignacio Ros Arnal , Yolanda González Irazabal , Guillermo Hernández de Abajo","doi":"10.1016/j.anpede.2025.503742","DOIUrl":"10.1016/j.anpede.2025.503742","url":null,"abstract":"<div><h3>Objectives</h3><div>To determine how many patients may have received a mistaken diagnosis of coeliac disease using the ESPGHAN 2012 and 2020 criteria without performance of biopsy when using chemiluminescence, and to evaluate possible causes of interference affecting anti-tissue transglutaminase antibody results obtained with this technique.</div></div><div><h3>Methods</h3><div>Retrospective and descriptive study of biopsies of patients with elevated tissue transglutaminase antibodies (tTGA) measured by chemiluminescence in a tertiary care hospital.</div></div><div><h3>Results</h3><div>The sample included 135 patients with a mean age of 7.7 years. The diagnosis of coeliac disease was confirmed in 67 (49.6%) and ruled out in the remaining 68 (50.4%).</div><div>Subsequently, among those with a non-diagnostic biopsy, we found that 13 (19.1%) would have met the ESPGHAN 2012 criteria and 17 (25%) the ESPGHAN 2020 criteria. The tTG antibody levels were greater than 10 times the upper limit of normal (ULN) in 27.9%. In patients who tested positive for endomysial antibodies (EMA), the cut-off point for tTGA measured by chemiluminescence that achieved the best combined sensitivity and specificity (Youden index) was 849<!--> <!-->U/mL (42.5<!--> <!-->×<!--> <!-->ULN). On the other hand, if EMA levels were not taken into account, the cut-off point was 301<!--> <!-->U/mL (15<!--> <!-->×<!--> <!-->ULN).</div><div>In addition, 16 patients (23.5%) received a diagnosis of chronic gastritis secondary to <em>Helicobacter pylori</em> (HP) infection, of who 50% fulfilled the ESPGHAN 2012 and 2020 criteria for diagnosis without biopsy.</div></div><div><h3>Conclusions</h3><div>Transglutaminase antibody levels measured by chemiluminescence offer a high sensitivity, but there can be artifacts due to situations such as infection by HP. Floods pose risks to the affected populations, including an increase in communicable diseases mainly due to population displacement and overcrowding, deficiencies in hygiene and dietary measures and difficulties accessing health care. The most frequently reported infectious diseases in the context of these disasters are gastrointestinal and respiratory diseases and diseases resulting from wound infection.
