The paper reviews the work of a team who decided to democratise the process and use inclusive co-design methodologies. The lessons learnt were important and shared to the extent that a three year projec has entered its fifth year supported by organisations interested in global reach and open access. AAC users with intellectual disabilites were fully engaged in decision making for the design of symbols developed both as additions and newly designed open licenced symbol sets. This encouraged design that reflectd the users’ perceptions of cultural and social settings, increasing a sense of famiarity and ownwership.as representative of the countries in which they have been designed. Users also had their own core vocabularies and orthography which highlighted the need for more research into the differences that are occurring between multilingual symbol sets and the need for more work in this area.","PeriodicalId":93559,"journal":{"name":"Global journal of intellectual & developmental disabilities","volume":" ","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2020-10-08","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"45554790","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Immediately after publication, this author was asked if stereotypic behaviors were detrimental enough to warrant intervention. Based on my published research and the research of others, my response is an emphatic “yes.†This opinion outlines the detrimental effects of stereotypic behaviors in individuals with autism. This opinion explores the research past and present. Finally, this opinion discusses areas in which more research is needed.","PeriodicalId":93559,"journal":{"name":"Global journal of intellectual & developmental disabilities","volume":" ","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2020-09-14","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"44150208","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

According to the WHO [2], health is created within the settings of people’s everyday lives. That is, being healthy requires participation in activities of daily living that are part of one’s sociocultural context. This indicates that health closely relates to having capacity in various types of daily activities which provide a sense of reality and achievement. The Ottawa Charter for Health Promotion supports this concept by identifying engagement in everyday activities as the prerequisites of health [3].","PeriodicalId":93559,"journal":{"name":"Global journal of intellectual & developmental disabilities","volume":" ","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2020-08-24","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"43794962","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

This idea is developed through a neuropsychological model that has valuable implications in teaching practice. In fact, the identification of the three brain networks and the recognition of the uniqueness of the subjective functioning constitute the foundation of the principles and guidelines of UDL, for the creation of flexible, egalitarian and accessible to all curricula. This work aims to support the applicability of the UDL model, with its neuropsychological framework, to students with Intellectual Disabilities (ID). The integration between the UDL framework and teaching strategies, such as, functional behavior analysis, teacher made interventions, class wide peer tutoring and curriculum modifications, can promote universal design for learning and inclusive teaching for all students, even with different level of ID.","PeriodicalId":93559,"journal":{"name":"Global journal of intellectual & developmental disabilities","volume":" ","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2020-07-20","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"49443014","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

However, by reason of what may be their lack of discernment, their propensity to obsessionality and their digital naivete, they are at risk of both being victimised and engaging in unlawful forms of behaviour. This article identifies a number of scenarios in which such persons have been found by courts to have engaged in problematic conduct arising from their disorders and highlights the particular risks of online criminal offending. It calls for upskilling of persons with intellectual and developmental disabilities so that they are better equipped to navigate the Internet without such risks. It also argues for online-aware professionals to develop light-touch forms of guidance to assist prudent and safe Internet usage for those with intellectual and developmental disabilities.","PeriodicalId":93559,"journal":{"name":"Global journal of intellectual & developmental disabilities","volume":" ","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2020-02-20","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"47811828","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Adolescents living with developmental disabilities experience more difficulties in anticipating and dealing with transitions, in moving toward positive adulthood trajectories. According to current counseling literature some resources are particularly relevant in order to support these goals. The case study presented here is an example of the possibility and usefulness of giving voice to adolescents with developmental disability who are close to life transitions and assessing their resilience, adaptability, courage and future goals.
