Emphasis is placed on considering the use of CWA for system design, as outlined by Vicente [18], and for integrated system design, as called for by Vicente [19] and developed by Naikar and Elix [8,9]. Of note are some key distinctions in the perspectives of integrated system design. Specifically, although it was not Vicente's [19] intention to provide a comprehensive discussion, a clear difference between his approach and the one Naikar and Elix [8,9] propose concerns the level of integration. In the former, the designs of various system elements, such as the interfaces and teams, would be integrated in relation to a reduced space of possibilities for action. This shortcoming arises because the designs would be confined to organisational structures prevalent in recurring situations and potentially restricted by the design decided for the team. Such an approach could inhibit a system's inherent capacity for adaptation.","PeriodicalId":93284,"journal":{"name":"ECCE ... : proceedings of the ... European Conference on Cognitive Ergonomics. VR is currently applied in different domains, such as medical and psychological therapy, industry, entertainment and training. Given the importance established by this system, it is fundamental to understand the factors that could lead to a better implementation. Trust has been seen as an important factor for other technologies, but little attention has previously been given to trust in VR systems. This work aimed to understand if the concept of presence could be one of the factors influencing trust in VR. To do so, an experiment has been conducted at The University of Nottingham. The results show that there is a relationship between presence and trust, which exists for different VR systems and encompasses all the sub-factors of trust.","PeriodicalId":93284,"journal":{"name":"ECCE ... : proceedings of the ... The study was conducted during seven training sessions in a nuclear submarine simulator. Trainees were Diving-Safety Teams, who are responsible for controlling the ship and ensuring safety. Team leaders' verbal statements were coded according to Endsley's model of situation awareness (SA) in order to determine their underlying intentions. Results showed that operational performance improved when team leaders shared their understanding of the current situation and its potential evolution. They also highlighted the importance of sharing evaluations of data, actions and goals. The key finding was that two-thirds of verbal statements expressed by team leaders support the development of SA. This confirms its crucial role in the context of complex sociotechnical systems in risky environments.","PeriodicalId":93284,"journal":{"name":"ECCE ... : proceedings of the ... Here, we ran a carefully controlled study of human-computer interactions with musical stimuli --- with and without visuals, and with and without recognizable people -- to directly test whether we could design an engaging stimulus that did not elicit empathy, by avoiding human faces or personal interaction. We measured subjective responses by visual analogue scale and found that the faceless stimulus was as engaging as the face-containing stimulus, but much less empathy-provoking. Therefore, we propose that empathy and engagement be considered independently during interaction design, because they are not monotonically related.","PeriodicalId":93284,"journal":{"name":"ECCE ... : proceedings of the ... Body movements have long been known to play an important role in communication, especially when teaching. The characterisation of such a relationship could be important to predict the pedagogical significance of parts of lectures in order to support a more effective delivery of online lectures (e.g., video summarisation). Videos of five lectures from different subjects were collected and the occurrence and frequency of the lecturers' hand gestures were carefully annotated together with the meaning of the gestures. A survey among 82 students was then conducted in order to establish a relationship between the annotated gestures and the pedagogical significance of their accompanying speech. It was found that three types of gesture (\"pointing\", \"circle\" and \"ball\") indicate that the corresponding lecture part is of particular pedagogical significance.","PeriodicalId":93284,"journal":{"name":"ECCE ... : proceedings of the ... When implementing a project, it can often be difficult to ensure that these design principles are being considered and that a positive user experience is being achieved. This paper outlines the proposition of an interactive HCI audit tool designed to aid in the adherence to various key HCI principles during the interactive design process. It is also anticipated that this tool will enhance cognitive ergonomics within the field of interaction design by assimilating existing knowledge into prototypes for practical usage. Additionally, the tool should support team-based collaboration in working towards human-computer systems that provide a quality user experience.","PeriodicalId":93284,"journal":{"name":"ECCE ... : proceedings of the ... Smart-Home is an opportunity to design solutions helping people to reduce their consumption. Eco-feedback is one solution among others that allows householders to experience new energy management in their home. From the literature, we acknowledge that appropriation of eco-feedback increases energy literacy and behavior changes. However, it is difficult to maintain them in the long-term. In our study, we focus on householders' needs and viewpoints to design solutions. By focusing on real activity and lived experience, Ergonomics can reveal the evolving dynamics of the relationship between the actors and the sociotechnical environment. We designed a longitudinal qualitative study with regular interviews focused on the subjective experience of the domestic activities with eco-feedback technologies.","PeriodicalId":93284,"journal":{"name":"ECCE ... : proceedings of the ... Consequently, adaptive systems need to identify and react to different kinds of previous user experiences. In this paper we examine possible effects of the user expertise on a user's choice of modality, performance, and the temporal parameters of the interaction. Results show that increasing user expertise elevates the use of multimodal interaction modalities in general and the use of the familiar multimodal modality in particular. Increasing unimodal expertise, however, does not. Our results further show, that the level of user expertise can affect the performance of the user. Based on our findings, this can be deducted from temporal factors of the interaction, such as the temporal gap between two subsequent inputs.","PeriodicalId":93284,"journal":{"name":"ECCE ... : proceedings of the ... Simulation is a convenient way to design and evaluate the benefit of such innovation for the driver. For this purpose, we have developed a virtual HUD that we compare to real AR HUDs from depth perception features. User testing was conducted with 24 participants in a stereoscopic driving simulator. It showed the ability of the virtual HUD to reproduce the perception of the distance between real objects and their augmentation. Three AR overlay designs to highlight the car ahead were compared: the trapezoid shape was perceived as more congruent that the U shape overlay.","PeriodicalId":93284,"journal":{"name":"ECCE ... : proceedings of the ...
