Findings suggest that elite female athletes participating in sports with a focus on leanness or aesthetics are at greatest risk. A paucity of research remains as to the period after onset and how existing sufferers manage their illness over time. In line with the principles of interpretative phenomenological analysis (IPA), this study ‘gives voice’ to four athletes who have experienced disordered eating, documenting their personal accounts and interpreting these accounts from a psychological perspective. In‐depth, semi‐structured interviews were conducted and verbatim transcripts were analysed according to the procedures of IPA. Three superordinate themes emerged from the data: the struggle to disclose, social support needs and identity challenges. Athletes’ stories provided rich descriptions of their subjective disordered eating experiences. Their accounts give critical insight into the impact of eating disturbance on the lives of athletes. Future research should continue to identify athletes with existing eating problems in order to improve understanding as to how such individuals can best be helped.","PeriodicalId":92578,"journal":{"name":"Qualitative research in sport and exercise","volume":"16 1","pages":"354 - 370"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2010-10-20","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"78827882","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Moreover, the existing literature on the constraints on LTPA among minorities has concentrated primarily on socio‐cultural issues. In light of this, the objective of this study was to investigate environmental constraints on LTPA experienced by Latino residents of two predominantly low‐income minority communities in the city of Chicago, IL. Four focus groups with residents and 11 in‐depth interviews with community stakeholders were conducted between June 2007 and December 2008. The findings of the study showed that lack of access to natural environments suitable for LTPA, poor maintenance of parks, inability to obtain recreation equipment, safety issues, language problems and lack of Spanish‐language information about programmes, racial tensions and discrimination, and traffic problems limited Latino's involvement in LTPA.","PeriodicalId":92578,"journal":{"name":"Qualitative research in sport and exercise","volume":"81 1","pages":"313 - 335"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2010-10-20","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"83883595","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Vikki Krane and Diane Whaley organised the Think Tank. Initially, invitations were sent to about 20 scholars doing this type of research. All of the people invited to the Think Tank engage in cutting-edge research that often addresses novel topics, methods or presentation styles within sport and exercise psychology. While everyone responded noting their interest in, and support for, the Think Tank, travel schedules and reduced travel budgets impeded the ability of many to attend. Heather Barber (University of New Hampshire), Shannon Baird (University of Iowa), Deb Kendzierski (Villanova University), Vikki Krane (Bowling Green State University), Kerry McGannon (University of Iowa), Brett Smith (Loughborough University) and Diane Whaley (University of Virginia) were in attendance. Although we had an agenda, conversation tended to meander, zigzag and crisscross various themes and topics. Everyone was quite passionate and eager to share ideas, challenges, potential solutions and support for one another. We began with an overview of the rationale for why Vikki and Diane invited everyone to the Think Tank: our goal was for the Think Tank to be a forum in which we can support each other, consider potential collaborations, discuss research in progress and constructively approach the challenges we face. Vikki initiated conversation by telling her story, emphasising the feeling of being ‘academically homeless’ as an interdisciplinary researcher. Others in the group, also skirting the boundaries of multiple disciplines, were at times finding it hard to situate their work within sport and exercise psychology. As such, conversation focused on the challenges we face, such as finding accommodating publishing outlets, page limits that do not consider our need to write for multiple audiences within a single paper, having adequate formats for presenting our work at conferences and feeling that we tend to ‘preach to the choir’ in presentations advocating change or employing critical approaches. We spent four hours before lunch addressing these issues. Perhaps most notable was the different perspectives brought to the conversation; across us, our research included postmodern, post-structural, queer and feminist epistemologies; community engagement; and quantitative and qualitative methods. In this paper, the validity of the content (variables thought to influence use) and process (how the variables come together) of these models is assessed. Reporting the second qualitative stage of a broader choice modelling study, n = 20 interviews (conducted from August 2007 to January 2008) and three follow‐up focus groups (n = 29; June 2008) with athletes, coaches, sports nutritionists, physiotherapists, sports administrators and sports scientists were used to generate a grounded model of athlete PESM use. Ten factors, organised around four themes, emerged (objective of PESM use, about the PESM, the deterrence system and consequences if prosecuted). The model suggested by these factors provides confidence in terms of what variables influence athlete PESM use (content), although questions remain as to whether rationality reflects how the behaviour manifests. This latter point remains to be tested in the third quantitative stage of this research programme.","PeriodicalId":92578,"journal":{"name":"Qualitative research in sport and exercise","volume":"48 1","pages":"385 - 402"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2010-10-20","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"87055171","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The centrepiece of the paper is an ethnographic fiction which, through a series of scenes, tells of our experiences of providing and researching a nine‐week golf programme for a group of men with severe and enduring mental health problems. Ethnographic fiction is a writing strategy which we chose for its ability to both generate and communicate the alternative kinds of knowledge which can be gained through ethnographic research. We reflect on the ways in which this writing strategy led us to a heightened awareness of the intricate web of connections – between people, places, experiences, events, objects and biographies – evident within this particular socio‐cultural setting. Awareness of these connections, we suggest, is necessary if we are to understand (1) the potential roles of sport and exercise for people with mental health difficulties, and (2) the methodological challenges faced by researchers in this field.","PeriodicalId":92578,"journal":{"name":"Qualitative research in sport and exercise","volume":"128 1","pages":"336 - 353"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2010-10-20","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"87920240","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

It takes as its starting point a view of the social world as individualised and fluid but simultaneously connected to history and ideology and attempts to explain the behaviours of this small group of men. In doing so, the tale aims to problematise rather than disprove or remove ‘modern’ structural sociology and especially the concept of hegemonic masculinity by (re)drawing on empirical data and presenting it in a way that gives a better sense of ‘reality’ in the form of 10 minutes of ‘real‐time’ action. The paper concludes that these men appear to be actively seeking belonging and security in a world that offers little of either and may construct their own masculine discourse away from the bowdlerising of an itinerant society and vehemently defend it from the challenges of both others and the ephemerality of their own lives.","PeriodicalId":92578,"journal":{"name":"Qualitative research in sport and exercise","volume":"110 1","pages":"371 - 384"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2010-10-20","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"85272133","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Adopting visual methods can enhance our understanding of the social world. By encompassing a multitude of forms including photographs, videos, maps, diagrams, symbols and so forth, images can provide specific information about our existence. They can also act as powerful indicators regarding the multiple meanings embedded within our culture. One domain where the use of visual methods has been less well documented is that of physical culture. Physical culture is taken here to mean human physical movement occurring within recognised cultural domains such as sport, dance and, more broadly, outdoor and indoor recreational activities involving expression through physicality. Opening this special edition of Qualitative Research in Sport and Exercise on ‘Visual Methods in Physical Culture’s’, I provide some broad responses to the following questions: What are visual methods? Why might they be useful? How can they be utilised? I then outline some ongoing debates within the field surrounding issues of interpretation, representation and ethics. I conclude by positioning this special edition as a resource to assist with the continued use of visual methods in physical culture.","PeriodicalId":92578,"journal":{"name":"Qualitative research in sport and exercise","volume":"44 1","pages":"108 - 93"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2010-07-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"76750203","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

This study examined how female athletes prefer to be represented photographically. In past research, such representations can be interpreted as an expression of power, agency and resistance as well as constrained by the patriarchal construction of women's sport. Our exploration of athletes' choice of representation is grounded in a multidisciplinary perspective that joins feminist cultural studies and social psychological theory. Twenty female college athletes participated in a photo shoot in which they selected how they would be portrayed (e.g., attire, location, pose) and a short interview in which they chose and discussed their favourite photograph. Analysis of the athlete interviews revealed four primary higher order themes emerging from the data: being an athlete, psychological characteristics, social identities and progressive interpretation of femininity. Overall, the participants emphasised the power and strength of female athletes, which we interpret to signify pride in their athleticism and musculature. Why these photographs differ considerably from typical media images of female athletes are discussed relative to our conceptual framework.","PeriodicalId":92578,"journal":{"name":"Qualitative research in sport and exercise","volume":"85 1","pages":"175 - 195"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2010-07-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"78588596","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

This paper explores the visual, embodied and interactive elements of the post‐sport physical culture(s) of fell running. Fell running is textually represented in the paper as a physical cultural practice with many surface level, or ‘residual’, articulations of mainstream sport, but is deployed by many enthusiasts as a novel praxis of athletic engagement that cultivates communion with the self, others and the environment. By unpacking ethnographic and photo‐elicitation data gleaned through a study of fell running in the English midlands, and drawing from several core concepts in French post‐structural theory, I infographically illustrate the allure of post‐sports like fell running to people who wish to immerse themselves in rather novel contexts of desire‐producing, personally rewarding and spiritual activity. The paper represents how increased recognition and promotion of a broad range of post‐sport cultures within the global athletic ethnosphere might promote mass, and sustained, involvement in physical activity across a range of groups.","PeriodicalId":92578,"journal":{"name":"Qualitative research in sport and exercise","volume":"27 1","pages":"109 - 132"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2010-07-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"80969296","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
