There are critical needs for cost-effective, reliable, and fairly accurate solutions to meet the demands of indoor robotic applications. Ultrasonic sensors have been popular in detecting simple objects due to the low-cost and simplicity despite their limitations. We propose an efficient way of deployment of ultrasonic sensors for low-cost mobile robots. A Smartphone has many high performance sensors that can be utilized to navigate and localize mobile robots. The sensors include a camera, a gyroscope, and an accelerometer. We analyzed the use of orientation sensor of a Smartphone and compared its performance to a conventional approach. The comparison results were promising. The combination of the efficient way of the sensor deployment and the use of Smartphone sensors shows a possibility of developing a low-cost indoor mobile robotics platform for college education and robotics research laboratories.","PeriodicalId":92209,"journal":{"name":"IEEE International Conference on Electro Information Technology : [proceedings]. Using Ultra-Capacitors(UC) and PhotoVoltaic (PV) panel together with a Fuel Cell(FC) system is a possible solution to provide sufficient power supplies for residential areas. Each model for the FC, PV and UC are developed, and four modes of operations of the proposed hybrid power system are defined for the proposed supervisory control. The proposed hybrid power system is simulated and analyzed based upon the modeling and the supervisory control algorithm in Matlab/Simulink environment.","PeriodicalId":92209,"journal":{"name":"IEEE International Conference on Electro Information Technology : [proceedings]. The implementation of this algorithm employs probabilistic and heuristic methods to improve the placement of lane features, whose location is uncertain due do to vehicle motion and sensor data ambiguity. The resulting map can be effectively used for local and regional path planning and navigation. The algorithm uses data acquired from a LIDAR, compass, GPS, wheel encoders, and camera images.","PeriodicalId":92209,"journal":{"name":"IEEE International Conference on Electro Information Technology : [proceedings]. This approach uses thing-to-thing or thing-to-gateway connections to access the Internet of Things, allowing data to be stored for cross-referencing and accessing services, such as remote home sensors, etc. In order to make these ubiquitous networks available in the home, power line communication is used. These lines carry data simultaneously with AC electric power. Power lines connect heterogeneous devices through private electrical networks, allowing greater flexibility in the deployment of applications that require important data transfer. Broadband access and advancements in ubiquitous computing have fostered the development of power line communication offering integrated services through a reliable and robust system at the physical and data link layer of the open system interconnection (OSI) model. In this paper we describe application of ubiquitous networks in smart home environment.","PeriodicalId":92209,"journal":{"name":"IEEE International Conference on Electro Information Technology : [proceedings]. The weather parameters, such as temperature, humidity, and precipitation affect the load requirements in non-autonomous wide area smart grid system. We modeled the relationships of the load with aforementioned weather parameters. Moreover, various correlation models, such as Pearson, Spearman, and Kendall are quantitatively analyzed for each independent weather data variables. Furthermore, simple linear regression and multi-linear regression techniques are applied for the statistical varying load model in the wide area smart grid system. The effect of each independent variable on the dependent variable (load) is critically observed using statistical tool R. The linear and non-linear varying patterns exhibited monitoring information for the load control and management of wide area smart grid system.","PeriodicalId":92209,"journal":{"name":"IEEE International Conference on Electro Information Technology : [proceedings]. A smart space implemented at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln was designed for automated and intelligent assistance for elderly and disabled people, and also for astronauts in space. Localization is a critical component of the smart space since it provides the system with the movement patterns and location of its inhabitants. Two systems have been deployed and evaluated for the purpose of localizing people in the smart space: the Ubisense ultra-wide band (UWB) system and the Cricket indoor localization system. Both systems support three-dimensional localization within the smart space. The two systems are evaluated, compared, and analyzed in the perspective of smart space development.","PeriodicalId":92209,"journal":{"name":"IEEE International Conference on Electro Information Technology : [proceedings].
