CINAHL, PsycINFO, PubMed, and Scopus databases were searched for articles published from 2008 to 2019. Eleven studies involving 1,613 participants were included. The five factors identified comprised spirituality, illness belief, health literacy, social interaction and communication, and social and family support. The factor regarding social and family support was a significant factor resulting in a healthy level of family functioning. Family was the primary support system for children living with thalassemia and their whole family. Interestingly, illness belief, spirituality and magic as a source of family power, could lessen the burden and allow a stronger sense of control to transcend through difficult times. These five factors should be integrated in interventions designed to enhance family functioning. However, different cultures in each region should be considered while planning for intervention to enhance family functioning.","PeriodicalId":92144,"journal":{"name":"The Bangkok medical journal","volume":null,"pages":null},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2020-09-25","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"48462362","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

MATERIALS AND METHODS: A qualitative study was conducted with Thai Muslims in the South of Thailand. The research used purposive sampling to select participants for in-depth interviews. Thirteen participants who were diagnosed at least one year and able to communicate verbally in Thai were recruited. Data were analyzed by content analysis. RESULTS: Three themes emerged from life experiences of Thai Muslims with T2DM: “Before diagnosis”, “When facing the diagnosis” and “Living with the unwelcome guest (diabetes)”. During “Before diagnosis”, the participants reflected the primary sign with major symptoms. For “When facing the diagnosis”, the participants reflected their feeling as “unwelcome guest” which referred to undesirable visitors who intrude into their home unexpectedly. It can be categorized in 3 sub-themes which were “unexpected”, “annoying” and “God sent”. In “Living with the unwelcome guest (diabetes)”; there were 3 sub-themes: “finding ways to get rid of the unwelcome guest” (various self-care behaviors in controlling blood sugar level), “discouraged by the disease” (lost their hope in fighting against their uncontrolled blood sugar levels) or feeling tired in taking control of food (when all the things that were done did not work), and “To bear it” (a feeling after being discouraged after unsuccessfully controlling the disease and deciding to ignore it or let it be). CONCLUSION: These findings reflected that Thai Muslims with T2DM struggled with the disease, could not manage their life with it, and got less support from both family and the community. Thus, health care professionals need to provide cultural sensitive care specific for Thai Muslims.","PeriodicalId":92144,"journal":{"name":"The Bangkok medical journal","volume":null,"pages":null},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2020-09-25","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"45438655","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

MATERIALS AND METHODS: Silkworm pupae were stored at -20, 10 and 25 °C respectively. We measured histamine levels and counted bacterial colonies on the microbiological culture plates in 0, 24, 48 and 72 hours after euthanizing the silkworm pupae. RESULTS: The level of histamine in the silkworm pupae was increased when storing at 10 oC and 25 oC with the lapse of time. The histamine level has soared from 24 h to 48 h at 25 °C, which is nearly 5 times higher. Each bacterial colony was increased at 10 °C and 25 °C until 48 h and then rapidly decreased in 72 h. The highest level of bacterial colony appeared in the 48 h at 10 °C and 25 °C. CONCLUSION: This study showed that the level of histamine and microbial growth in silkworm pupae were changed by the storage temperature and time. However, the histamine level in the silkworm pupae was no cause for concern on human health.","PeriodicalId":92144,"journal":{"name":"The Bangkok medical journal","volume":null,"pages":null},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2020-09-25","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"44526172","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

It is considered to be one of the most impactful inventions after electricity. The term Deep Learning is referring to a characteristic of computation structure in such a way that it contains many layers. Medical Imaging1, among many other fields in medicine, has the potential in applications to perform preventive and diagnostic measures. A systematic review2 shows that deep learning consistently outperforms health-care professional’s counterparts in various tasks in both sensitivity and specificity. In recent years, several deep learning approaches for Bone Age Assessment (BAA) have been purposed. Many of them provided promising results compared to health-care professionals and this creates the need for a comprehensive review of them. There is a recent literature review on BAA by Dallora et al.3 However, it puts a limited focus on the technical aspects. Hence, this article will pay particular attention to automated BAA using deep learning and its latest developments in model architectures and training techniques as well as examining its strengths and weaknesses.","PeriodicalId":92144,"journal":{"name":"The Bangkok medical journal","volume":null,"pages":null},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2020-09-25","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"46657149","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

MATERIALS AND METHODS: A single-center, prospective, cohort study was conducted to compare the STSG survival rates of gauze-based and foam-based NPWDs at Days 7 and 30 post-surgery. Sixty-nine patients underwent STSG and NPWD procedures. In all, 79 wounds required dressing: 42 had a foam-based NPWD applied, while the remaining 37 wounds had a gauze-based NPWD. Wall-suctioned, continuously negative pressure was applied at -100 mmHg for 7 days. RESULTS: At Day 7, the median graft survivals of the foam- and gauze-based NPWDs were 89.74% and 87.63%, respectively. At 30 days, the median graft survival for the foam- and gauze-based NPWDs were 95.2% and 92.01%, respectively. There was no statistical difference in the graft survival of the 2 groups. The success rate of graft survival for the gauze-based NPWD proved to not be inferior to that of foam-based NPWD.
