Present study focused on evaluating the lung function parameters for the state-level male basketball players and male volleyball players of West Bengal, India apart from comparing the data with their agematched healthy, sedentary male counterparts. Methods: State-level young male basketball (n = 40) and volleyball (n = 40) players being involved in athletic training for a minimum of 5 years were employed in the study from several sports clubs in Kolkata. Sedentary group subjects (n = 30) who were non-smokers and belonging to similar socioeconomic background served as the control group for the study. Standard procedures were followed for measurement of the physical parameters and pulmonary functions. Results: Physical parameters like body height, body weight were significantly (p < 0.05) lower in case of the sedentary male control subjects when compared against both basketball and volleyball players. Vital capacity (VC), forced vital capacity (FVC), forced expiratory volume in 1 second (FEV1), end expiratory flow (FEF75%-85%) and peak expiratory flow rates (PEFR) were significantly (p < 0.05) higher for both the basketball and volleyball players in contrast to their age-matched, healthy sedentary counterparts. Body height and body weight were found to be correlated significantly with the lung function parameters. For prediction of the pulmonary function parameters in the studied population, both simple as well as multiple linear regression equations were computed. Conclusion: Data from the study revealed that participation in court sports like Basketball and Volleyball lead to improvement of the pulmonary functions status of the athletes possibly due to their training pattern and game demands. Prediction of the pulmonary function in the studied population may be done by employing the regression equations.","PeriodicalId":91516,"journal":{"name":"International journal of respiratory and pulmonary medicine","volume":" ","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2018-12-31","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"46364644","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

However, the prevalence and consequences of dyslipidemia in COPD is still unclear. Aims: We studied comprehensive lipid profile panel including serum total cholesterol (TC), triglyceride (TG), low density lipoproteins (LDL), very low-density lipoproteins (VLDL) and high-density lipoproteins (HDL) in COPD patients to study the relationship of dyslipidemia with severity of disease. Methods: Serum TC, TG, LDFL, VLDL and HDL were measured at baseline patients with COPD. Anthropometry including BMI, mid upper arm circumference (MUAC), sum of four skin fold thickness and six-minute walk test (6MWT) were done in all the patients. Results: Of 125 recruited patients, 35 had moderate, 52 severe & 38 very severe COPD. Total cholesterol in moderate, severe and very severe COPD was 178.5 ± 34.5 mg/dl, 174.2 ± 36.4 and 169.4 ± 34.1 mg/dl respectively. Level of LDL in moderate, severe and very severe COPD was 107.5 ± 34.5 mg/dl, 103.0 ± 33.7 & 103.1 ± 35.6 mg/dl respectively. HDL levels in moderate, severe & very severe COPD were 43.2 ± 5.3, 44.9 ± 8.4, 43.1 ± 9.5 mg/dl. VLDL levels in moderate, severe and very severe COPD were 21.0 (11.0-112.0), 21.9 (2.0-177.0), 21.0 (10.0-80.0) mg/dl. TG levels in moderate, severe & very severe COPD was 106.0 (55.0-418.0), 106.0 (36.0-353.0), 103.0 (52.0-295.00 mg/dl respectively. 6MWT, BMI & MUAC decreased with severity of COPD. There was no significant difference in smoking index and waist hip ratio in the 3 groups. Conclusions: We did not find any correlation between COPD disease severity and lipoproteins.","PeriodicalId":91516,"journal":{"name":"International journal of respiratory and pulmonary medicine","volume":"1 1","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2018-12-31","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"41462166","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Biological tests were ordered prior to the onset of the treatment and were all normal. After one month under treatment, he developed hematological and hepatic toxicity signs: Neutropenia, cytolysis and cholestasis. After an onward investigation, rifampicin was identified as neutropenia causal treatment and pyrazinamid was avoided to prevent its hepatotoxicity. The decision of the multidisciplinary staff was to introduce a combination of three drugs: Isoniazid, Ethambutol and Ciprofloxacin during eight months while stopping Rifampicin. Chest X ray exam showed no recurrence of the pleural effusion.","PeriodicalId":91516,"journal":{"name":"International journal of respiratory and pulmonary medicine","volume":" ","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2018-12-31","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"44112595","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Lymphedema is a chronic condition stemming from the insufficient drainage of interstitial tissue fluid by lymphatic vessels resulting in swelling of lower extremities and increase in body weight. It limits the movement capacity of the individual leading to “long term disability”. Thus, weight gain related obesity and sleep disordered breathing trigger each other; the patient who already experiences problems due to elephantiasis is also confronted by the systemic problems posed by narrowing of the upper respiratory airways and severe sleep apnea syndrome.","PeriodicalId":91516,"journal":{"name":"International journal of respiratory and pulmonary medicine","volume":" ","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2018-12-31","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"48369702","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Recent studies demonstrated that left ventricular diastolic dysfunction (LVDD) and pentraxin-3 (PTX-3) are early signs for development of heart failure. The objective of our study was to estimate the relation between OSA severity and LVDD and PTX-3. Methods: Sixty-six OSA patients and 25 healthy people who underwent polysomnography to diagnose OSA were enrolled. Ninety-one participants were divided into three groups as per apnea-hypopnea index (AHI), including mild (5 ≤ AHI < 15) and moderate-severe OSA (AHI ≥ 15) and control group (AHI < 5). Left ventricular diastolic function was evaluated by the ratio of early diastolic peak transmitral flow velocity (E)/peak early diastolic mitral annular velocity (Em) (E/Em) and maximal left atrial volume index (LAVI). Peripheral blood levels of PTX-3 were measured. Results: Our results showed that levels of PTX-3 increased significantly, and the ratio of E/Em and maximal LAVI increased obviously with the increase of OSA severity. There was a remarkable positive correlation between the E/ Em ratio, maximal LAVI and AHI. Levels of PTX-3 in serum were positively correlated with the E/Em ratio. Levels of PTX-3 were also positively related with maximal LAVI. Conclusion: OSA patients showed significant enhancement of PTX-3 levels and LVDD. Furthermore, both PTX-3 and LVDD were independently correlated with severity of OSA defined by AHI. Serum PTX-3 levels were positively correlated with LVDD in OSA patients.","PeriodicalId":91516,"journal":{"name":"International journal of respiratory and pulmonary medicine","volume":" ","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2018-12-31","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"48943795","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

If the blood cannot be expectorated out from bronchus, sludged blood will form and obstruct the bronchus in a matter of a few minutes. Then an acute respiratory failure would be the immediate result, which might lead to a critical state or death of the patient. The most effective method to rescue patient is to suction off the sludged blood with a bronchoscope. But bronchoscopy normally is unable to draw-off the sludged blood from the bronchus because of the strong adhesive power of the sludged blood. However, cryotherapy under bronchoscopy may make sludged blood temperature cool below zero and become solid and then take out the sludged blood from the bronchus in a short time and rescue patient.","PeriodicalId":91516,"journal":{"name":"International journal of respiratory and pulmonary medicine","volume":" ","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2018-12-31","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"45040117","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
