Crowdsourcing using wiki platforms provides a novel way for a professional community to share ideas and collaborate on content creation, curation, maintenance and sharing. This is the aim of the Field Epidemiological Manual wiki (FEMwiki) project enabling online collaborative content sharing and interaction for field epidemiologists around a growing training wiki resource. However, while user contributions are the driving force for content creation, any medical information resource needs to keep editorial control and quality assurance. This requirement is typically in conflict with community-driven Web 2.0 content creation. However, to maximize the opportunities for the network of epidemiologists actively editing the wiki content while keeping quality and editorial control, a novel structure was developed to encourage crowdsourcing -- a support for dual versioning for each wiki page enabling maintenance of expertreviewed pages in parallel with user-updated versions, and a clear navigation between the related versions. Secondly, the training wiki content needs to be organized in a semantically-enhanced taxonomical navigation structure enabling domain experts to find information on a growing site easily. This also provides an ideal opportunity for crowdsourcing. We developed a user-editable collaborative interface crowdsourcing the taxonomy live maintenance to the community of field epidemiologists by embedding the taxonomy in a training wiki platform and generating the semantic navigation hierarchy on the fly. Launched in 2010, FEMwiki is a real world service supporting field epidemiologists in Europe and worldwide. The crowdsourcing success was evaluated by assessing the number and type of changes made by the professional network of epidemiologists over several months and demonstrated that crowdsourcing encourages user to edit existing and create new content and also leads to expansion of the domain taxonomy.
DH'15: proceedings of the 5th International Conference on Digital Health 2015 : May 18-20, 2015, Florence, Italy. It further follows on the International Workshop on Public Health in the Digital Age (1st PHDA 2013 and 2nd PHDA 2014) building a community of public health informatics professionals. With ACM support, collocation with WWW 2015 and expanded programme, the rebranded 5th DH 2015 promises to deliver a prime international interdisciplinary event bringing together frontline public health professionals and computer science researches in data mining, crowdsourcing and Big Data analysis for public health surveillance. To better embrace the growing digital health domain, the 5th DH 2015 is organized into more independent Tracks with proceedings printed by ACM Digital Library. \u0000 \u0000Collocation with WWW 2015 promises to attract computer scientists to public health data management and analytics challenges, we are also inviting a wider industry, start-ups and medical audience. Keynote speakers include Alberto Sanna, the Director of eServices for Life and Health, Scientific Institute San Raffaele, Italy will deliver a talk on "Engineering Awareness: Health & Wellbeing Services in Socio-technological Ecosystems". We have a great academic programme including 16 full papers, 14 extended medical abstracts, and 24 posters and a lineup of industry and healthcare speakers confirmed. \u0000 \u0000The DH 2015 conference is following its predecessors on social media. You can follow our Twitter account (@eHealthconf) for the latest updates. We welcome online discussion and feedback -- the official hashtag for the conference is #DH2015. We also have a Facebook page at http://www.facebook.com/eHealthConf. And please take a look at our Flickr page for the poster presentations at http://www.flickr.com/groups/digitalhealth2015/. \u0000 \u0000This year we are repeating a very popular evening -- the "Speed Networking" event to bring together the academic, industry, start up and medical audiences in an effective and enjoyable way.
DH'15: proceedings of the 5th International Conference on Digital Health 2015 : May 18-20, 2015, Florence, Italy. A key purpose is to allow the domain experts to collaboratively model the knowledge content and tailor interaction to users. Therefore, the development has been done in a process of participatory action research where domain experts have contributed to the design and re-design of ACKTUS while they have been modeling the content and behavior of end-user applications. The ontology that serves as the knowledge structure in the system integrates the user model, modality values, clinical practice guidelines and preferences, in the form of schemes and scheme-nodes (arguments) in an argumentation framework, partly by integrating the argument interchange format. User studies have shown that ACKTUS can be used for the intended purpose by domain professionals not familiar with knowledge engineering tasks. Moreover, the platform functions as a research infrastructure for health researchers in their development and evaluation of new ICT-based interventions targeting improved health.
DH'15: proceedings of the 5th International Conference on Digital Health 2015 : May 18-20, 2015, Florence, Italy. Yom-Tov
Syndromic surveillance refers to the analysis of medical information for the purpose of detecting outbreaks of disease earlier than would have been possible otherwise and to estimate the prevalence of the disease in a population. Internet data, especially search engine queries and social media postings, have shown promise in contributing to syndromic surveillance for influenza and dengue fever. Here we focus on the recent outbreak of Ebola Virus Disease and ask whether three major sources of Internet data could have been used for early detection of the outbreak and for its ongoing monitoring. We analyze queries submitted to the Bing search engine, postings made by people using Twitter, and news articles in mainstream media, all collected from both the main infected countries in Africa and from across the world between November 2013 and October 2014. Our results indicate that it is unlikely any of the three sources would have provided an alert more than a week before the official announcement of the World Health Organization. Furthermore, over time, the number of Twitter messages and Bing queries related to Ebola are better correlated with the number of news articles than with the number of cases of the disease, even in the most affected countries. Information sought by users was predominantly from news sites and Wikipedia, and exhibited temporal patterns similar to those typical of news events. Thus, it is likely that the majority of Internet data about Ebola stems from news-like interest, not from information needs of people with Ebola. We discuss the differences between the current Ebola outbreak and seasonal influenza with respect to syndromic surveillance, and suggest further research is needed to understand where Internet data can assist in surveillance, and where it cannot.
DH'15: proceedings of the 5th International Conference on Digital Health 2015 : May 18-20, 2015, Florence, Italy. BACKGROUND Increasing financial constraints on most academic institutions have resulted in less face-to-face teaching and introducing a greater need for electronic resources either using web based software packages, e-books or videos [1]. The introduction of electronic learning services has provided alternative learning methods for medical students. With the advent of the smartphone and tablet, there are now several user-friendly devices available for use in the hospital environment. These have been seen as acceptable formats of learning from clinicians, patients and students [2]. With over 30,000 medical apps available it is likely to be where the future of medical education heads [3]
DH'15: proceedings of the 5th International Conference on Digital Health 2015 : May 18-20, 2015, Florence, Italy.
