We present the results of a longitudinal pilot study, conducted in Scotland over six months with 20 patients previously diagnosed with melanoma. The app provided instructions on how to perform Total Skin Self-Examinations (TSSE), a set of high resolution photographs of their skin for comparison, and the facility to send information and photographs of suspicious skin changes directly to a nurse specialist. We investigate patients' experiences of this type of intervention and outline insights into the development of future e-health apps which encourage self-checking behaviours.","PeriodicalId":91246,"journal":{"name":"DH'15: proceedings of the 5th International Conference on Digital Health 2015 : May 18-20, 2015, Florence, Italy. Given the extensive adoption of social media technologies in the anorexia affected demographic, we study behavioral characteristics of this population focusing on the social media Tumblr. Aligned with observations in prior literature, we find the presence of two prominent anorexia related communities on Tumblr -- pro-anorexia and pro-recovery. Empirical analyses on several thousand Tumblr posts show use of the site as a media-rich platform replete with triggering content for enacting anorexia as a lifestyle choice. Through use of common pro-anorexia tags, the pro-recovery community however attempts to \"permeate\" into the pro-anorexia community to educate them of the health risks of anorexia. Further, the communities exhibit distinctive affective, social, cognitive, and linguistic style markers. Compared with recover- ing anorexics, pro-anorexics express greater negative affect, higher cognitive impairment, and greater feelings of social isolation and self-harm. We also observe that these characteristics may be used in a predictive setting to detect anorexia content with 80% accuracy. Based on our findings, clinical implications of detecting anorexia related content on social media are discussed.","PeriodicalId":91246,"journal":{"name":"DH'15: proceedings of the 5th International Conference on Digital Health 2015 : May 18-20, 2015, Florence, Italy. Mokap aims to address two specific challenges: provide support for early development stage design and facilitate involvement of domain experts. More specifically, on the one hand, it aims to make serious game authoring possible for people with no technical background. On the other hand, Mokap provides explicit support for activities related to analysis and design, especially useful during the early stages of development. In this sense, Mokap aims to facilitate the transition from the designers' board to the programmers' environment and also to enhance communication between the different roles of the development team. Developed as an open source environment, Mokap is oriented to mobile devices (tablets and smartphones), a kind of technology most educational stakeholders are familiar with. We present the main design concepts behind Mokap, along with some technical insight into the platform and the description of the game Listen With Lemur as a case study.","PeriodicalId":91246,"journal":{"name":"DH'15: proceedings of the 5th International Conference on Digital Health 2015 : May 18-20, 2015, Florence, Italy. Motivated by the obesity epidemic in the United States, our aim is three-fold: (i) to assess the relationship between fast food and chain restaurants and obesity, (ii) to better understand people's thoughts on and perceptions of their daily dining experiences, and (iii) to reveal the nature of social reinforcement and approval in the context of dietary health on social media. When we correlate the prominence of fast food restaurants in US counties with obesity, we find the Foursquare data to show a greater correlation at 0.424 than official survey data from the County Health Rankings would show. Our analysis further reveals a relationship between small businesses and local foods with better dietary health, with such restaurants getting more attention in areas of lower obesity. However, even in such areas, social approval favors the unhealthy foods high in sugar, with donut shops producing the most liked photos. Thus, the dietary landscape our study reveals is a complex ecosystem, with fast food playing a role alongside social interactions and personal perceptions, which often may be at odds.","PeriodicalId":91246,"journal":{"name":"DH'15: proceedings of the 5th International Conference on Digital Health 2015 : May 18-20, 2015, Florence, Italy.
