Self-reported anthropometric data is convenient and inexpensive, but relying on this data requires an accurate estimation of age and height. The biasness, precision, and accuracy of adult’s self-reported age and height across subpopulations were examined using a representative sample of adults. Aim of the present study is to report bias in an individual’s reported and documented age and height estimates. The study sample were included more than 200 young adult students (100 male and 100 female subjects approximately) from Panjab university, Chandigarh, age from 18 to 25. Linear and multiple regression analysis were done to formulate equations which would be helpful for estimation of stature and age from self-reported data for both male and females. The best correlation estimation in multiple and linear regression equations for age estimation in male was shown self-reported data whereas in females reported to be data from parents rather than self-reported data , females tends to decrease their age number as shown in results while in stature best variable is selfreported. The weakest correlation was reported to be data from close friends in both males and females.","PeriodicalId":9123,"journal":{"name":"Brazilian Journal of Forensic Sciences, Medical Law and Bioethics","volume":"44 1","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2019-09-28","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"75668014","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Ridge density was determined on 125 prisoners (77 males, 48 females) by diagonally counting numbers of ridges with in a defined area in radial region of the fingertip. Contrary to previous studies convicted male prisoners of present study showed higher ridge density than their female counterparts, although differences were not statistically significant except at digit V of right hand. This trend was further confirmed by probability of proportions, and likelihood ratio of digit V of convicted prisoners exhibiting ridge density of 17 or more was most likely to be of male origin and ridge density of 14 or less was most likely to be of female origin with divergent behaviour.","PeriodicalId":9123,"journal":{"name":"Brazilian Journal of Forensic Sciences, Medical Law and Bioethics","volume":"9 1","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2019-09-25","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"77631812","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Abstract. Workplace accidents have not only civil, labor and social security implications, but also repercussions in the criminal sphere. In this aspect, there is a lack of studies focusing on criminal investigations from the point of view of the forensic expert. This study proposes the construction of the proper scientific knowledge for a greater efficiency of the criminal prosecution; and points out the need to invest in knowledge and training of forensic experts in the concepts and methods of workplace accidents investigation. Thus, the main contribution is the discussion of the elements that enable the preparation of expert reports which constitute relevant material evidence, in synergy with the prevention culture in the workplace.","PeriodicalId":9123,"journal":{"name":"Brazilian Journal of Forensic Sciences, Medical Law and Bioethics","volume":"34 1","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2019-09-05","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"88514666","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The electrodes performed better than the electrodes obtained for analysis on commercial screen-printed electrodes, which we also tested here. We conducted the analyses in aqueous solution containing 0.1 mol·L NH4ClO4 as supporting electrolyte. For cocaine in acidic medium, the linear correlation coefficient, the LOD, and the LOQ were 0.996, 4.66 10 mol·L, and 1.55 10 mol·L, respectively. For cocaine in acetonitrile medium, the linear correlation coefficient, the LOD, and the LOQ were 0.994, 9.77 10 mol·L, and 3.26 10 mol·L, respectively. The specificity of the methodology is advantageous when the response of different interfering substances analyzed in this work (lidocaine, procaine, caffeine and phenacetine) is concerned.","PeriodicalId":9123,"journal":{"name":"Brazilian Journal of Forensic Sciences, Medical Law and Bioethics","volume":"09 1","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2019-06-23","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"85949247","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Documents are frequent targets of fraud and adulteration. Sometimes it is not enough to determine the document’s authenticity or authorship, but it is also necessary to demonstrate when the document was signed or written. Determining the age of a document, also known as ink dating analysis, is still a challenge for the forensic examiners. There are two main approaches for the dating of ballpoint pen inks: the static method, which is based on the characterization and identification of the ink composition and comparison to a reference collection, and the dynamic method, which involves the study of ink’s processes and alterations that occur with time, considering environmental aging factors such as light and humidity. This article aims to provide a comprehensive systematic review of the studies regarding ballpoint ink characterization and dating, in the last ten years. There are several methods, destructive and non-destructive, which are capable of characterizing and differentiating blue and black ballpoint pens that have shown applicability to the static approach. Regarding the dynamic dating methods, most studies quantified the loss of 2-phenoxyethanol (2-PE) solvent over time","PeriodicalId":9123,"journal":{"name":"Brazilian Journal of Forensic Sciences, Medical Law and Bioethics","volume":"25 1","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2019-06-22","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"87973249","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

For a better epidemiological understanding of these deaths this study analyzed CA forensic reports of \"accidents\" and homicides victims in the 2006 to 2012 period. The murders comprised 65% of the 2,462 reports of under 18s studied. Penetrating trauma (\"shot\" and \"stabbing\") was more prevalent in homicides (93%) while non-penetrating trauma prevailed in \"accidents\" (99%) (p <0.05). The victims of \"shots\" were more frequent than those of \"stabs\" and an average of 4.8 entry wounds were observed by autopsy in those. The most common \"accidents\" were those of traffic and drownings. The weekend was the period with the highest number of necropsies of both homicides and \"accidents\" and the age group of 12 to 17 years concentrated the largest number of cases. The mean age was 10.6 years for \"accidents\" and 15.5 for those killed (p <0.05). The highest proportion of homicide deaths was in the 15 to 17 age group and the highest proportion of accidents between 6 and 8. The proportion of men and browns was significantly higher in those killed than in those who were injured. There was also a higher proportion of positive blood alcohol and toxicological results in the victims of homicide (p <0.05). These data confirm the high number of CA deaths due to homicides and \"accidents\" in our country and contribute, in delineating an epidemiological profile, to the targeting of intervention and prevention measures.","PeriodicalId":9123,"journal":{"name":"Brazilian Journal of Forensic Sciences, Medical Law and Bioethics","volume":"25 1","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2019-03-29","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"89459587","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
