Studies of complex cognitive tasks frame emotion as an aspect of individual differences. This study used Appraisal analysis to assess subjective attitudes realised across four weeks of writing an essay, content analysis to identify how students took up instructor input, and co-frequency to identify strong connections. Results indicate that students focus on researching essay content at the expense of structure and language. They find topic sentences more difficult than thesis statements, and have difficulty collating sentence-level proficiency with the sophisticated discourse-level demands of the essay task. Content and attitude frequencies suggested that relatively little work was done in the first week, substantial work was done in weeks two and three, and realisations dropped sharply in the final week, suggesting resource-dispersing impacts in the final stretch. Since, hope unlike want, tends to be associated with desires that result from careful and thoughtful reasoning (e.g., Portner & Rubinstein, 2012), the standard use of an indicative embedded complement is not unexpected. By analyzing the discourse practice of gender construction in traditional Chinese culture and its reconstruction in translation, it is hoped that different powers and values will be revealed through Critical Discourse Analysis (CDA) and Systemic Functional Linguistics (SFL). As well as being an iconographic expression of the social injustice they suffered (Rapp & Rhomberg, 2013; Goalwin, 2013), these wall paintings were employed by the republicans to convey political and ideological messages in order to heighten awareness and to mobilize people. Blank spaces on walls were increasingly exploited by republican groups and were converted into a visual medium sui generis for their political and ideological claims and demands. Over the years republicans developed this novel communication strategy geared to expressing highly emotional content that served to reflect and influence the sentiments of the communities involved in the conflict. It also served to channel collective memory, recording key events and contributing to the formation of an identity. Intense political disagreements and armed conflict between the Catholic and Protestant communities from 1968 to 1998 led to violent clashes during the period known as “the Troubles”. This complicated time frame has been metaphorically represented in various ways in wall paintings and posters in Northern Ireland. The aim of this paper is to analyze the political and ideological use of visual metaphors in the images of the republican movement during the “Troubles”. Besides, few of the previous studies adopt an onomasiological approach to study borrowings. Thus, this study aims to investigate the pragmatic functions of English borrowings by comparing English borrowings with their native equivalents in line with the onomasiological approach. To this end, the study collects data from Weibo and divides the English borrowings occurring in the hot topics on Weibo into two types based on the existence of native equivalents, namely, catachrestic borrowings and non-catachrestic borrowings. It is revealed in the study that catachrestic borrowings provide a stereotypical interpretation of a concept that has not been lexicalized in Chinese and primarily serve the function of filling lexical gaps while non-catachrestic borrowings can create special pragmatic effects as marked choices in contrast to their native equivalents. While drawing the distinction between catachrestic and non-catachrestic borrowings helps shed light on their different functions, this study argues that the distinction is dynamic and context-dependent as the pragmatic functions of borrowings are conditioned by contexts and susceptible to change. Audiovisual materials consist of four components: verbal-acoustic, verbal-visual, nonverbal-visual, and nonverbal-acoustic. Subtitlers usually focus on rendering the verbal-acoustic component (i.e., the dialogue) and rarely focus on the verbal-visual component. Therefore, this article aims to identify the subtitling strategies used in rendering the verbal-visual components that are displayed simultaneously with the dialogue. The data are taken from the docudrama The Social Dilemma. Gottlieb’s (1992) typology is used to identify the applied subtitling strategies. The analysis demonstrates that the subtitler employed seven subtitling strategies: transfer, paraphrase, imitation, deletion, expansion, condensation, and resignation. Also, the results indicate that resignation was the most frequently used strategy. The main theoretical basis of this research proves that one person’s individual speech is the result of mixing the regional varieties and their features. The research analyses foreign linguistical discussions about American variant of English and its influence on British English within different aspects. Various materials of scientific discussions, different authors’ ideas and various comments of Internet users are in the list of materials that were used in this article. Based on dynamic and temporal characteristics of a speech, the article highlights the key features of British and American English and their territorial varieties. It also examines the influence of American English on other regional variants on the pronunciation and grammatical norms. The main object of the study is English language with its regional varieties. Analysis shows that the language reflection stands for significant component of national and cultural self-knowledge of English people. The article expresses the influence of American English on British English: firstly, on everyday vocabulary, phrases and expressions. As a required course of all universities in China, College English has a large demographic covering millions of students. But the traditional EFL summative assessment model fails to fully reflect the L2 learner’s learning process and increment performance. The current paper focuses on the novel applications of blockchain in the educational domain and how blockchain technology reshapes the EFL Formative Assessment framework in the consensus mechanism to achieve a decentralized and highly trusted learning process record and evaluation. This innovative approach aims at improving the openness, transparency, and fairness of the EFL learning process by recording and monitoring the teachers’ and students’ behaviors. With the aid of visualization analysis techniques, this study examines the machine translation literature published in the CNKI database from 1959 to 2021 while analyzing its history, key issues, arguments, and future directions of related research.
