This study shows how the meaning of family planning is (re)constructed by members of a particular locale, from its prominent messaging as a government health program to the ideas expressed by its consumers. Findings demonstrate the potential of Social Representations Theory to capture shared meanings rooted in a group’s own contexts and conditions.","PeriodicalId":90678,"journal":{"name":"Philippine journal of psychology","volume":"225 S731","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2022-09-09","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"41266404","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

However, few studies have reported its effectiveness based on the storied lives of the participants. We evaluated Katatagan Konta Droga sa Komunidad (KKDK), a 12-module CBDT program designed for low to mild risk users, using a narrative approach to demonstrate how this form of evaluation can enrich our understanding of program effectiveness. Themes that emerged from the narratives of seven recovering drug users who completed the program described the program’s strengths in terms of its ideological approach to treatment that is reconstructive and uplifting to their lives; the collaboration with facilitators, Local Government Units, and Philippine National Police officers; and its use of cultural resources that support recovery and change. We discuss the implications of these findings on the integration of the program with broader social and political initiatives to address the problem of drug abuse.","PeriodicalId":90678,"journal":{"name":"Philippine journal of psychology","volume":" ","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2022-08-11","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"45548194","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The study involved two phases- item generation and content validation, then pilot testing and exploration of dimensions. In Phase one it was found that tagasalo has 4 main descriptors: having a strong urge to assume responsibility, acting as a mediator, prioritizing others over self, and possessing an inclination to take care of others. In Phase two it was found that the tagasalo scale yielded two factors – taking care of other people, and taking care of the family. The two-factor structure explained 53.5% of the variance in the data. The scale had a Cronbach's alpha of 0.87, while the factors obtained good reliability indices of .85 and .78, respectively.","PeriodicalId":90678,"journal":{"name":"Philippine journal of psychology","volume":" ","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2022-08-11","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"42851331","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Besides the stress and pressure from academic work, students have to deal with the challenge of transitioning from high school to college. Stress and distress associated with university experiences can impact mental health, and in turn, students’ academic performance. This paper highlights some insights from a needs assessment project that explored students’ perspectives on their university experiences and their own mental health. The researchers utilized a mixed methods research design, where 305 students accomplished online surveys and 20 students participated in focus group discussions. Integrative analysis of data was guided by Kirsh et al.’s (2016) socioecological focus on interrelated self, social, and environmental influences on student mental health. Results converge with existing studies indicating the need for academic institutions to examine and change their learning culture to one that explicitly acknowledges the role of mental health in student learning and well-being.","PeriodicalId":90678,"journal":{"name":"Philippine journal of psychology","volume":" ","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2022-06-17","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"48132806","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Healthy well-being can counter retirement anxiety allowing the person to carefully plan and make better life choices before and during retirement. This brief research report investigated whether high psychological well-being is associated with lower retirement anxiety among 339 middle-aged soon-to-be-retiring Filipinos. The participants completed the PERMA Profiler and Retirement Anxiety Scale. Results reveal that a significant inverse relationship exists between our research variables, with overall psychological well-being predicting 15% of the variance in retirement anxiety. Psychological well-being, particularly its key constructs of positive emotions (P), relationships (R), meaning (M), and accomplishment (A), should be enhanced to buffer feelings of retirement anxiety among middle-aged Filipinos.","PeriodicalId":90678,"journal":{"name":"Philippine journal of psychology","volume":" ","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2022-02-07","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"42058726","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Data was collected through an online survey distributed to workers in the Philippines, and qualitative responses from 106 participants were subjected to thematic analysis. Several themes that reflect favorable and unfavorable attitudes toward\u0000job and work tasks, work arrangements, employers, as well as work-life balance, health, and sustainability emerged from the data. These themes were described using the tripartite (or affect-behavior-cognition) model of attitudes. Results of the study emphasize the importance of context in shaping employee attitudes, and suggest different ways organizations can help improve employees’ experiences and perception of work during and beyond the COVID-19 crisis.","PeriodicalId":90678,"journal":{"name":"Philippine journal of psychology","volume":" ","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2021-09-30","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"45844486","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

One hundred fifty-one (N =151) respondents, majority of whom are registered psychometricians, answered a survey on their current practices, knowledge, skills, and attitudes. Part 1 of the study presented practitioners’ training and practice, and their knowledge, skills, and perceptions about psychological assessment. Part 2 considered current assessment practices, from test selection to delivering test results. Thematic analysis was conducted on respondents’ answers to open-ended questions in the survey to explore the challenges, best practices, and needs of practitioners. Despite the limitations of the sample, the initial findings of this survey provide baseline data on how some assessment practitioners perceive the state of the practice in the country. Given limited experiences in assessment, majority of the respondents acknowledged the need for a supervisor, continuous training and development, standardization of the assessment process, and development of local tools. Both the quantitative and qualitative data show that some of the current practices in assessment are aligned with EBPA components although there is still a need for practitioners to adhere more consistently to an evidence based practice in assessment.","PeriodicalId":90678,"journal":{"name":"Philippine journal of psychology","volume":"1 1","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2021-06-10","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"42479092","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

It was hypothesized that mindfully eliciting daily awareness and experiences of gratitude would produce a significant decrease in the adoption of negative conflict resolution styles and an increase in positive conflict resolution strategies. Participants randomly assigned to either a treatment or placebo group were tasked to complete a 15-day gratitude journaling intervention or a 15-day placebo journaling exercise, respectively. All participants answered the Conflict Resolution Style Index (CRSI) immediately before and after the journaling intervention, and at a follow-up posttest another two weeks after. Differences between placebo and treatment groups were analyzed via independent samples t-tests and changes across testing phases within groups were evaluated via repeated measures ANOVA. Thematic analyses of journal entries and interviews with treatment participants further explored the scope of the gratitude experience. Between-group and within-group analyses indicate that participation in a gratitude journaling intervention resulted in increased adoption of more positive conflict resolution styles and decreased adherence to negative conflict resolution styles. The Broaden and Build Phenomenon is inferred as the underlying mechanism that produced these positive effects.","PeriodicalId":90678,"journal":{"name":"Philippine journal of psychology","volume":" ","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2021-06-10","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"43476909","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

This study focused on the experience of panata among female Black Nazarene devotees from low-income communities and sought to understand how they make sense of these experiences. Eleven participants from the Ladies of the Black Nazarene and Kababaihan ng Bukluran were interviewed. Three themes were identified using interpretative phenomenological analysis (IPA), namely: feeling of loss and hopelessness, and experience of vulnerability as entry points to panata; self-transformation as a result of integrating panata into everyday life; and transition from panata as a personal vow to a social responsibility. The uniqueness of their experiences, brought about by the intersection of gender and socioeconomic status, was examined through the intersectionality theory. Panata is seen as a guiding principle for everyday life and a reflection of structural vulnerability. These devotional activities are also a way of life that can build cooperative communities, promote authentic moral behavior, and empower the structurally vulnerable.","PeriodicalId":90678,"journal":{"name":"Philippine journal of psychology","volume":" ","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2021-06-10","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"48790371","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Six human rights workers from Karapatan responded to semi-structured interviews. Karapatan is a Philippine NGO whose mission is to uphold human rights and document instances of human rights violations. The results described the risks experienced by human rights workers in conflict afflicted areas in the country. Intrinsic factors that motivate HRWs to continuously engage in human rights work despite facing adverse situations include altruism, belief that they are advocating a just cause, feeling a sense of fulfillment, and strongly identifying with their work. Findings likewise show that human rights workers draw strength from the relationships that they have with their partner communities. They are motivated to match the courage of community members (tumbasan ang tapang), and are strengthened by the strong and reciprocal bonds that they have with the communities that they serve. Implications on selecting, preparing, developing and providing organizational support to human rights workers are discussed.","PeriodicalId":90678,"journal":{"name":"Philippine journal of psychology","volume":"1 1","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2020-06-19","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"48586074","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
