Methods: Twelve (n=12) males who regularly engage in recreational sport (age: 26.83 ± 4.45 years) participated in this study. Two experimental sessions were conducted 7 days apart. Muscle thickness (MT), pennation angle (Pang) and fascicle length (Lf) for both muscles were determined. Two ultrasound images of the VL were recorded with participants lying supine with the knee at 30o flexion and a further two images were obtained following a 20 min interval. One week later, two images were recorded during the second session. This process was repeated for the GM with participants lying prone with their muscles relaxed and ankle joint in a neutral position (90˚). Results: The within- and between-session minimum detectable changes were: VL MT=0.16 cm, 0.12 cm; VL Pang=0.76˚, 0.99˚; VL Lf=0.84 cm, 0.94 cm; GM MT=0.08 cm, 0.11 cm; GM Pang=0.97˚, 1.45˚; GM Lf=0.36 cm, 0.50 cm, respectively. Other reliability statistics included were intra-class correlation coefficients, coefficient of variation and typical error which also expressed high levels of reliability. Conclusion: The findings of this study suggest that B-mode ultrasonography can be used in confidence by novice radiographers when investigating changes in muscle architecture in males who regularly engage in recreational sport. The reliability statistics reported in this study can be used by researchers for sample size estimation in future studies.","PeriodicalId":90574,"journal":{"name":"Journal of athletic enhancement","volume":"112 1","pages":"1-5"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2018-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"80854481","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Method: 21 injured athletes participated in this research aged between 18 to 38 years of age. Data was collected over 8 weeks with regression analysis revealing relationships between rehabilitation adherence and rehabilitation engagement over time. Results: The analysis suggested that injured athletes that are high in rehabilitation adherence at the beginning of their treatment become less adherent at a slower rate than injured athletes who are initially low in adherence. Athletes who are highly engaged with their rehabilitation display a slower reduction in engagement than athletes who initially have low levels of engagement. As an athlete becomes less adherent they will experience a drop in their engagement levels. The reduction in engagement accelerates as adherence decreases. Conclusion: By helping to increase the understanding of the sports injury process and the implications that it can have on sports injury rehabilitation, it is hoped that this research will have positive effects on injured athletes’ rehabilitation processes.","PeriodicalId":90574,"journal":{"name":"Journal of athletic enhancement","volume":"18 1","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2018-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"90348467","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Oral diseases can decrease their performance by affecting their concentration during games and practice sessions. Appropriate education is therefore required regarding the importance of dental support. We introduced periodic dental examinations and fabricated custom-made mouthguards (CMGs) for athletes with cerebral palsy (CP). This study aimed to determine the effects of wearing a CMG on masticatory muscle activities in CP athletes while measuring center of gravity (COG) sway. Materials and Methods: Thirteen athletes with CP (male, n=12; mean age, 27.3 ± 8.96 y) and 10 healthy male controls (mean age, 28.5 ± 1.35 y) participated in the present study. The CMG comprised 2-mm-thick polyolefin sheeting. All participants underwent dental checks and occlusal contact areas were measured with and without a CMG. We simultaneously measured gravitational sway at the COG with the eyes open, as well as masticatory (masseter and digastric) muscle activities with or without a CMG. Data were statistically analyzed using two-way mixed analyses of variance. Results: Indices for decayed, missing and filled teeth did not significantly differ between athletes and controls. However, the occlusal contact area significantly increased in athletes when wearing a CMG. Although COG sway slightly differed between having eyes open and closed in athletes, masticatory muscle activity increased and COG sway decreased. Conclusion: The findings suggest that wearing a CMG might change the modality of masticatory muscle activity in athletes with CP and might help to improve balance during static exercise.","PeriodicalId":90574,"journal":{"name":"Journal of athletic enhancement","volume":"1 1","pages":"1-7"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2018-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"84042424","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

A standard sit and reach test was used to determine flexibility levels in the participant’s hamstring muscles. A standard 30 s Wingate test was used to calculate relative anaerobic power produced by the lower extremity. The participant’s fatigue index was also calculated and related to the participant’s hamstring flexibility. Correlation analysis was performed at a statistical significance level of p ≤ 0.05. Sit and reach scores did not significantly predict relative mean power and  predict fatigue index (f (1,18)=2.58, p=0.126; (f (1,18)=1.71, p=0.207). However, sit and reach scores significantly predicted peak power (f (1,18)=7.92, p=0.011); relative peak power (f (1,18)=5.31, p=0.033) and mean power (f (1,18)=8.82, p=0.008). In Conclusion, Implementing flexibility specific programs into sports training may have a positive effect on performance in sports involving a power component.","PeriodicalId":90574,"journal":{"name":"Journal of athletic enhancement","volume":"55 1","pages":"1-5"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2018-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"73370790","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Recent evidence from our laboratory suggests there may also be a key role of protein kinase C (PKC)-dependent pathways in cardio-protection. This study aimed to assess the effects of regular exercise of different volumes on total PKC levels, phosphorylated PKC levels, and the cellular distribution of PKC. To confirm these findings we conducted electrophysiological studies. Adult (12 weeks) male mice were divided into two groups, daily exercise (DE) and no exercise (NE) 40 min for 8 weeks. ECG traces were examined following the last exercise session and myocytes were isolated enzymatically for cell shortening and immune blotting studies. DE in mice led to increased myocyte shortening vs. NE. However, the degree of myocyte shortening was less in the presence of the drug chelerythine, protein expression also constantly decreased in chelerythrine treated cells. ECG data were supported in PKC knockout and wild type exercised mice. These data suggest, compared with no exercise, 8 weeks of regular exercise training in mice contributes to increased myocyte shortening via activation of the PKC pathway.","PeriodicalId":90574,"journal":{"name":"Journal of athletic enhancement","volume":"49 1","pages":"1-5"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2017-10-25","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"91267316","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Pre-performance rituals and/or practices vary amongst individual athletes and assist the athlete with their ability to focus during performance. Athletes attain the ability to control distractions through exercises of mental preparation such as guided imagery, observation of performance, and sport-specific power statements. The athletes involved in the current study were members of a team which is a competitive performance club league in the American Collegiate Hockey Association (ACHA). A recording consisting of 40 hockey specific power statements was randomly assigned to 10 members of the team by an independent source and the other 10 members received a recording asking the athlete to continue on their normal pre-practice routine. The athletes were advised to listen to the recording directly before the practice and then were observed. Data was collected on the pass completion/ incompletion and goal completion/incompletion pre-treatment on a separate occasion and data collection was repeated after treatment was applied. It was predicted that the completion of goals and passes would increase in those athletes receiving treatment and the results in the athletes not treated would remain the same as in the pre-treated results. Results of the data collected show a significant relationship to the intended result in passing completion and a positive trend in goal completion in the athletes who received the treatment. Results of the athletes not receiving treatment were the same as the intended result, an acute deviation from pre-treatment statistics.","PeriodicalId":90574,"journal":{"name":"Journal of athletic enhancement","volume":"22 1","pages":"1-3"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2017-10-12","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"90780514","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Eighteen pitchers (13.6 ± 1.3 years; 169.3 ± 8.0 cm; 62.3 ± 10.2 kg) and fifteen quarterbacks (14.3 ± 1.6 years; 174.9 ± 7.9 cm; 69.1 ± 14.0 kg) participated. Pitchers threw three fastballs to a catcher (46 ft; 14.0 m), while quarterbacks threw three 15 yard (13.7 m) passes to a receiver. Baseball pitchers displayed significantly greater trunk flexion at maximum external rotation (MER), ball release (BR) and maximum internal rotation (MIR) (p<0.001, p=0.003, p=0.007); as well as greater trunk rotation opposite throwing arm side at BR (p=0.048). Football quarterbacks displayed greater trunk rotation to throwing arm side at MER (p=0.002); shoulder horizontal adduction at FC (p=0.004); shoulder external rotation at BR (p=0.036); and elbow flexion at FC and MER (p=0.018, p=0.044). Trunk kinematic differences may be the result of pitchers throwing from a mound versus flat ground, just as upper extremity kinematic differences could be the result of the weight and shape of the ball.","PeriodicalId":90574,"journal":{"name":"Journal of athletic enhancement","volume":"28 1","pages":"1-4"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2017-10-12","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"87251190","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Data on female volleyball players are rare. The purpose of this study was thus to examine serum high-density-lipoprotein cholesterol (HDL-C) subfractions in collegiate female volleyball players. Twenty-six female collegiate volleyball players were compared with 26 age- and body mass index-matched control subjects. Dietary information was obtained with a food frequency questionnaire. The subjects were all nonsmokers and were not taking any drug known to affect lipid and lipoprotein metabolism. The volleyball players showed significantly higher mean HDL2-C than the control group. There were no significant differences in HDL-C and HDL3-C between the 2 groups. The results indicate that favorable lipid and lipoprotein profiles could be obtained by vigorous volleyball training and significantly higher HDL2-C could be obtained without observing significant differences in HDL-C and HDL3-C.","PeriodicalId":90574,"journal":{"name":"Journal of athletic enhancement","volume":"1 1","pages":"1-4"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2017-08-09","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"79844448","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

This analysis looked into 211 resistance training male Caucasians, the genes and SNPs that were analysed were AGT (rs699), ACTN3 (rs1815739), PPARA (rs4253778) and IGF2 (rs680). Certain gene alleles appear to be interlinked in this group, with certain variants being in higher numbers in this athlete group going against studies on mass population groups. The study suggests that when a favourable genetic profile is combined with correct training it can have an advantageous effect on the individual. However, these results are speculative until a larger group can be analysed, yet, this provides a very good window of opportunity for further analysis into these elusive FIT genes. The gene AGT (rs699) C allele appears to show a good correlation to power performance activity, possibly by increasing the activity of angiotensin II (a skeletal muscle growth factor), however there is a possible link with AGT, fat mass and power to weight ratio. The C allele in rs181739 and G allele in rs680 appear to positively influence back muscle strength performance, although the G allele in rs4253778 appears to have a negative influence upon muscle performance.","PeriodicalId":90574,"journal":{"name":"Journal of athletic enhancement","volume":"102 1","pages":"1-6"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2017-08-09","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"84828926","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
