As a result of overseas case studies, major countries are promoting the provision of services centered on regional comprehensive systems and home care centered on regional base hospitals to improve the quality of death of members of society and support well-dying. In addition, a system was established to connect facilities related to well-dying support and provide diversified services, as well as provide an interconnection network for hospice and palliative care services. On the other hand, in Korea, the scope of death proposed by the legal and institutional foundation is still very narrow, and death is regarded as an event rather than a continuum of life, and the minimum legal and institutional foundation required for this is established. Therefore, we also need to gradually expand the legal and institutional foundation so that well-dying and preparation for a good death, which are closely related to the rapid progress of aging, can be realized. Above all, it is a limitation that the area of well-dying service that the domestic system is currently interested in is narrow, and policy interest in the psychological and social areas is still lacking, so it is possible to comfortably discuss death as an element of life rather than avoiding death. It is also necessary to create a positive social atmosphere, strengthen services for the remaining family members, and prepare a policy foundation. To realize this, it is necessary to make policy efforts to gradually overcome the narrowness of current interests and areas in a larger framework. In addition, there is a need to improve the system so that more diversified and comprehensive well-dying support can be achieved by developing it to suit our situation by referring to the cases of major countries.","PeriodicalId":90513,"journal":{"name":"Han'guk nonyonhak = Journal of Korea Gerontological Society","volume":null,"pages":null},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-06-30","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"49513817","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

To this end, 286 cases of responding to the 2022 ‘Mental Health and Addiction Survey’ conducted online by Sogang University Life Culture Research Institute for the elderly aged 65 or older were used for analysis . As a result of the study, the elderly's active stress-coping method had a negative effect on drinking behavior, and the passive stress-coping method had a positive effect on drinking behavior. It was found that the elderly's active stress-coping method had a negative effect on depression, while the passive stress-coping method had a positive effect on depression. As a result of verifying the mediating effect of depression in the relationship between the elderly's stress coping style and drinking behavior, a full mediating effect was found in the relationship between active stress coping style and drinking behavior. A partial mediating effect was found in the relationship between passive stress coping style and drinking behavior. These results mean that if the elderly actively cope with stress, it does not directly affect drinking behavior, and drinking behavior is alleviated through a decrease in depression. On the other hand, when the elderly cope with stress passively, it directly affects the deterioration of drinking behavior, but it means that it indirectly affects drinking behavior through increased depression. Based on these research results, practical and policy measures to alleviate the drinking behavior of the elderly were suggested.","PeriodicalId":90513,"journal":{"name":"Han'guk nonyonhak = Journal of Korea Gerontological Society","volume":null,"pages":null},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-04-30","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"49335699","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

This study pays attention to employee abuse by residents and starts with a perception that this problem can affect the supply and demand of care workers in nursing homes for older adults. This study aims to analyze the effects of residents’ violence against care workers and care workers’ coping behavior on their job satisfaction in nursing homes for older adults, using a mixed methods approach. To this end, this study analyzed 419 care workers (49.2%) who experienced violence and participated in a national survey on long-term care in 2019 by the Korea Institute for Health and Social Affairs. In addition, to supplement the quantitative analysis, in-depth interviews were conducted with 5 care workers and 3 managers. As for the experience of residents’ violence among care workers, 78.8% of physical violence, 77.6% of verbal violence, and 35.8% of sexual violence were reported, and the most common coping behavior to residents’ violence was ‘to endure and keep working’ (73.5%). Regression analysis showed that among types of violence, the experience of sexual violence appeared to be negative to job satisfaction at a statistically significant level (p<.05). In terms of coping methods, ‘reporting to external authorities’ or ‘just enduring and continuing work’ was also found to have a negative impact (p<.05). The results of the interview may indicate the routinization and educationalization of residents’ violence. When combined with those qualitative analyses, this study implies that prevention of residents’ violence is the best countermeasure, while once an violence occurs, active protection and appropriate response by the management are necessary.","PeriodicalId":90513,"journal":{"name":"Han'guk nonyonhak = Journal of Korea Gerontological Society","volume":null,"pages":null},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-04-30","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"43412773","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Using databases from Pubmed, CINAHL, and Web of Science, a total of 1,386 studies were collected. 18 studies were selected according to the selection and exclusion criteria. 9 studies (50%) were published in the last five years. In the case of research design, 12 studies (66.6%) were designed as cross-sectional survey studies, which were found to be the most common. There were a total of 11 assessment tools for older adults’ social participation among 18 studies. The most widely used assessment tool was Assessment of Life Habits (LIFE-H), which was used in a total of 7 studies (38.9%). It was found that the components were different for each tool. Most of the assessment tools were in the form of self-reporting questionnaires. Frequency of the participation was the most c ommon method. Others asked the degree of diffic ulty and a number or status of partic ipating ac tivities. This study can help clinicians or researchers select social participation assessment tools, and it is expected that appropriate tool selection can lead to better understanding older adults’ social participation.","PeriodicalId":90513,"journal":{"name":"Han'guk nonyonhak = Journal of Korea Gerontological Society","volume":null,"pages":null},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-04-30","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"49493998","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Based on push and pull dualism, this paper demonstratively identified the determinants of those under the age of 60 worker’s early retirement decision under the perspective that the retirement timing varies depending on their polarized occupations: managers, (semi)experts as one group, and service workers, sales workers, agricultural and fishing skilled workers, and simple labor workers as the other group. To this end, this study was carried out on the KLoSA, using from the 2nd(2008) to 8th(2020) survey and using independent T-test, chi-squared test, and logistic regression. The main findings of this study are as follows. First, as a result of analyzing the determinants of early retirement of all workers, the pull factor was dominant over the push factor. Second, among managers and (semi)experts, push factors are found to have more influence on their early retirement decisions than pull factors. Lastly, among service workers, sales workers, agricultural and fishing skilled workers, and simple labor workers, both push and pull factors affect strongly the decision of early retirement for the mid-old aged. Based on these results, it is suggested that a guarantee system for retirement should reflect the job characteristics of middle-aged workers, a strategy to remove barriers to labor demand should be activated, and health promotion, and management activities in companies are needed.","PeriodicalId":90513,"journal":{"name":"Han'guk nonyonhak = Journal of Korea Gerontological Society","volume":null,"pages":null},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-04-30","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"42918824","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Data were drawn from the 2020 National Survey of Older Koreans. We analyzed a total of 3,752 adults who were employed. Hierarchical regression analysis was conducted to test an interaction between age discrimination in the workplace and gender on depressive symptoms. A significant main effect of age discrimination was found. Older adults who experienc ed age discrimination in the workplace had higher depressive symptoms than their counterparts. Gender did not show a significant main effect on depressive symptoms. An interaction effect of age discrimination and gender was significant. Both women and men who experienced age discrimination in the workplace reported higher depressive symptoms than their counterparts. The relationship between age discrimination and depressive symptoms was stronger for women. Findings suggest the need to consider heterogeneity and diversity within older adults in terms of the relationship between age discrimination and psychological health.","PeriodicalId":90513,"journal":{"name":"Han'guk nonyonhak = Journal of Korea Gerontological Society","volume":null,"pages":null},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-04-30","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"47370502","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

To achieve this goal, we selected a business unit, that is considered to be operating successfully. We conducted an in-depth analysis of their economic and social achievements as well as their success factors, by appling a case study method suitable for understanding “why“ and “how“ little-known early phenomenon is occurring. The analysis identified the following success factors: 1) selection of industry and scale suitable for the elderly employment program structure; 2) mutually beneficial network with other organizations working for public purposes; 3) business strategies that satisfy the market; 4) composition of synergistic and complementary human resources; 5) organizational culture of mutual respect; 6) voluntary learning and professional job training for the members; 7) a labor environment suitable for the elderly; 8) rational operating principles and transparent information sharing. The researchers interpreted the results by comparing the success factors of the H business unit with other organizations’ factors that have similar characteristics to the marketable project group, considering the situation and context of the case. Based on this, we discussed the implications for other marketable project groups.","PeriodicalId":90513,"journal":{"name":"Han'guk nonyonhak = Journal of Korea Gerontological Society","volume":null,"pages":null},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-04-30","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"44299909","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The samples were drawn from the 2019 Korean Welfare Panel Study, and we analyzed a total of 5,892 adults aged 60 or older based on marital status, living with their partner, widowed, divorced people, and separated. The hierarchical regression was used to analyze whether the relationship between marital status and alcohol consumption among older adults varied by the level of self-esteem. The results were shown that demographic and health-related factors were associated with unmarried status and problematic drinking, but more interaction effect of self-esteem on the married status. An additional analysis was conducted by comparing living with partners and each unit of unmarried status, widowed, divorced people, and separated to determine which group would have more problematic drinking. Older people who were widowed had problematic drinking, but there was an interaction effect of the self-esteem on people who are in married status. Divorced people were significantly consumed more alcohol than the participants who live with their partners, and it varied by their self-esteem. The divorced people also consumed more alcohol than the widowed, and it also changed depending on their self-esteem. Finding from this study highlight the significant role of transition in marital status as people get older and each one's level of self-esteem to reduce alcohol consumption, which could be related to alcohol abuse. Future implications were discussed to improve older adults' quality of life by reducing alcohol consumption and giving support.","PeriodicalId":90513,"journal":{"name":"Han'guk nonyonhak = Journal of Korea Gerontological Society","volume":null,"pages":null},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-02-28","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"48532167","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

A 16-session program developed through preliminary research was conducted for 3 months on 10 participants who were all providing care for their grandchildren and currently using a ‘A’ senior welfare center. To verify the effectiveness of the program, we applied a mixed-method approach using frequency analysis, descriptive statistical analysis, a Wilcoxon signed-rank test, and an interview. The main results of the study are as follows. First, it was found that the grandmother's parenting stress management program significantly reduced the level of the grandmother's parenting stress and significantly increased the level of social support and meaning as a grandparent. Second, among the stress coping methods; problem-focused coping and social support seeking(which are active coping methods), statistically increased significantly compared to prior results. However, emotional relief coping, which is a passive coping method, showed a significant decrease. Third, it was found that they(the care giving grandmothers) experienced changes in values, coping methods, and roles through the program. Based on the results of this study, it is suggested to initiate the program operation and start policy support options to reduce the parenting stress of supportive parenting grandmothers, along with finding further ideas for follow-up studies that have been provided.","PeriodicalId":90513,"journal":{"name":"Han'guk nonyonhak = Journal of Korea Gerontological Society","volume":null,"pages":null},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-02-28","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"46019086","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

However, less is known about how intergenerational experiences are shaping how older adults view age-related changes and aging itself. This study aims to examine how very old parents(81+) and their old children(65+) view their own aging and whether their health status and care experiences are associated with self-perceptions on aging within the prolonged relationship constellation—where parents and children age together. We analyzed data from 105 dyads of parents and their children in South Korea. Very old parents reported less positive self-perceptions of aging than their children; very old parents’ self-perceptions of aging were positively correlated with their child’s self-perceptions of aging. A path model predicting parents’ and children’s self-perceptions of aging showed that own subjective experiences of care within the dyads were significant for both parents’ and children’s self-perceptions of aging, while own health status was significant only for parents’ self-perceptions of aging. For old children, more caregiving burden was associated with less positive self-perceptions of aging; for very old parents, higher levels of satisfaction with care received from the child and fewer functional limitations in activities of daily living were associated with more positive self-perceptions of aging. The findings highlight the interdependence of self-perceptions of aging within the parent-child dyads in very late life, suggesting that care experiences within the prolonged relationship constellation should be considered to enhance older adults’ views on age-related gains and loss.","PeriodicalId":90513,"journal":{"name":"Han'guk nonyonhak = Journal of Korea Gerontological Society","volume":null,"pages":null},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-02-28","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"42272472","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
