Firstly, it briefly examines the media activities of the Church Missionary Society (CMS) in Nigeria. The aim is to understand how Anglican missionaries established and engaged with the media. Secondly, it examines the media establishments of the Church of Nigeria Anglican Communion (CoN). The objective is to outline the media outlets of the Church of Nigeria and to produce a thick description of the background of the Advent Cable Network Nigeria (ACNN), a television station of the CoN and to identify the link between the media activities of the CMS and the Church of Nigeria. Thirdly, this article presents an analysis of the theology of media for the Church of Nigeria. The aim is to understand the biblical and theological assumptions that underpin the media endeavours of the Church of Nigeria and how it relates with the concept of public pedagogy.","PeriodicalId":90425,"journal":{"name":"Alternation","volume":" ","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2021-12-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"46788552","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Power to make governance decisions goes with ownership of those decisions and accountability to multiple stakeholders. Therefore, it is not surprising that when South Africa became a democracy, it adopted some form of decentralisation of management and governance structures and devolution of power as part of its transformation agenda. However, through its own policies, the Department of Basic Education (DBE) has not successfully implemented this agenda in any meaningful way. In this conceptual paper, I examine various education policies which I argue have, paradoxically, promoted and entrenched inequalities of the past, and continued to disempower many schools. I also draw from current local and global literature to show that while decentralisation has succeeded to some extent, devolution of power has not. Concomitantly, schools with real devolution of governance powers stand a better chance of providing an effective response to disruptions caused by the coronavirus disease (COVID-19) pandemic.","PeriodicalId":90425,"journal":{"name":"Alternation","volume":" ","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2021-12-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"49571297","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

One of the problems emanates from existing theory in the field which has been chiefly concerned with efficiency and organisational functioning. With the onset of the coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic and the already existing reduction in leadership as an organisational phenomenon, this paper argues that these problems are exacerbated if leadership is not viewed as a social phenomenon. Drawing on the theoretical tenets from a doctoral study which focused on master’s coursework programmes in ELM at six South African universities, this paper commences by providing a genealogy of the field using ‘frames’ (functionalist, subjectivist, and critical). Trends from this genealogy are then surfaced and critiqued. The paper calls for a critical stance and argues that adopting social theory is essential to surface and address inequality and social justice issues in leading during the COVID-19 pandemic. A curriculum leadership case during the COVID-19 pandemic of adopting the Legitimation Code Theory as a social theory is offered for illustrative purposes.","PeriodicalId":90425,"journal":{"name":"Alternation","volume":" ","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2021-12-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"43060576","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
