However, various acupuncture-related adverse effects had been reported. We report a case of deep neck abscess involving mediastinum following acupuncture. A 56 years old immunocompromised gentleman developed extensive neck abscess with mediastinum involvement and inflammatory aortitis following acupuncture for shoulder pain. Staphylococcus aureus was isolated from the abscess culture. Surgical drainage with systemic antibiotic admission resulted in a good clinical recovery and resolution of infection.","PeriodicalId":90204,"journal":{"name":"Journal of behavioral health","volume":"5 1","pages":"137-139"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2016-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"70808414","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

It was aimed at reporting a post lingual deaf patient with unique experience of auditory hallucination after a long period of not hearing any sound which made us difficult to evaluate. A 42 year old profoundly deaf male presented with hearing voices and persistent communication with that voices; sudden unprovoked aggression; undue suspiciousness; sleep disturbances and poor self care for last one month. As deafness is a strong communication barrier, clinical diagnostic interview was performed carefully by written languages with the help of pen and paper to evaluate his hallucination as well as other psychotic symptoms. Detailed evaluation revealed that the patient had third person auditory hallucination in the form of running commentary which fulfills all criteria of perception. He was a diagnosed case of Schizophrenia and treated with antipsychotics. He responded with medications and discharged for further follow up. A different standardized method to explore such phenomenon in the deaf persons may provide comfort to the clinicians as well as may reduce the suffering of the affected persons.","PeriodicalId":90204,"journal":{"name":"Journal of behavioral health","volume":"5 1","pages":"194-196"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2016-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"70808633","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

One of those most notable strengths of this study is the significant proportion of our sample who identify as members of an ethnic minority, most notably Hispanic and African American (approximately 84% of the total sample). This improves upon previous studies that often report data on almost entirely white samples, who often also do not qualify as low-income. Thus, we feel that this study makes a substantial contribution to the literature in spite of the null findings.","PeriodicalId":90204,"journal":{"name":"Journal of behavioral health","volume":"5 1","pages":"39-44"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2016-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"70808647","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Perceptions of texting and driving were also measured. The use of text messaging while driving was predicted to greatly increase the number of simulated driving infractions. An overall negative view of texting and driving was expected, and participants in the texting condition were predicted to have a significantly stronger negative perception of texting and driving. Results revealed that texting while driving negatively impacted simulated driving performance. Participants committed nearly 10 times as many traffic infractions while engaged in a texting conversation compared to participants who drove the simulation without the use of a hand held texting device. In conclusion, texting significantly impairs driving ability, and greater efforts should be made to regulate the use of cellular communication devices while driving a motor vehicle.","PeriodicalId":90204,"journal":{"name":"Journal of behavioral health","volume":"5 1","pages":"12-16"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2016-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"70804906","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Objective: It is aimed at determining the existing health literacy level in technical personnel who frequently have professional illnesses in time and whose sociodemographic characteristics are influential at this level. Methods: In this study with cross sectional characteristic, all the technical personnel working at a South Korean based international electronics company’s regional authorized service centre in Ankara were reached. Survey method was used as data collection instrument. In the analysis of data, Kruskal-Wallis and Mann-Whitney U tests were applied using the SPSS 21.0 program. In determining the health literacy level, the BRIEF scale was used and explanatory and confirmatory factor analyses were done, using the AMOS 21.0 program to measure the structural validity of the scale. Results: All the technical personnel were male and the mean age was found to be 31,95±7,87 years. It was found that the health literacy levels of 90% of participants was insufficient and that sociodemographic characteristics were not influential on the health literacy level. The BRIEF health literacy scale that had been originally developed as a single factor was found as a two-factor scale. Conclusion: It is thought that the results of this study in which the health literacy was examined first time on the technical personnel would increase the awareness on health literacy, and provide managers in the electronic and health sectors with important information. In addition, it is considered that the development of the BRIEF health literacy scale in conformity with the Turkish society would be appropriate.","PeriodicalId":90204,"journal":{"name":"Journal of behavioral health","volume":"5 1","pages":"87-91"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2016-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"70808656","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Methods: Data from the 2003-2006 National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES) were used. Blood samples were used to evaluate LDL-cholesterol, HDL-cholesterol and triglycerides (TG). Body mass index was evaluated from measured height and weight, with physical activity evaluated via accelerometry. Multivariable logistic regression analysis was used to evaluate the association between the demographic and lifestyle characteristics with cholesterol profile. Results: 2,129 U.S adults (≥ 20 yrs) provided data on the study variables and therefore constituted the analytic sample. Men, non-Hispanic whites (vs. non-Hispanic blacks), those with a lower income-to-povety level (lower SES), and obese (vs. normal weight) adults had a higher odds of having low HDL levels. Regarding LDL status, older adults, those not on cholesterol medication, and overweight and obese adults (vs. normal weight adults) had a higher odds of having high LDL levels. Regarding TG status, men, non-Hispanic whites (vs. non-Hispanic blacks), overweight and obese (vs. normal weight) adults, and those engaging in less light-intensity physical activity had a higher odd of having high TG levels. Conclusions: Demographic parameters and lifestyle characteristics play an important role on patient cholesterol profile.","PeriodicalId":90204,"journal":{"name":"Journal of behavioral health","volume":"5 1","pages":"197-201"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2016-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"70808503","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

There is a paucity in the literature on the relationship between school sports participation and marijuana use. Therefore, the purpose of this study was to assess the relationship between school sports participation and recent marijuana use, past year marijuana use, perceived harm, perceived peer disapproval, and ease of marijuana access among males and females. We defined past year marijuana use as having smoked marijuana in the past year of survey completion and recent marijuana use as having used marijuana in the past 30 days of survey completion. Methods: We performed a secondary analysis of 2013-2014 PRIDE Survey data including 37,616 7th-12th grade students. Chi-square analyses and odds ratios were performed. Results: Fifteen percent of students indicated that they used marijuana within the past 30 days of survey completion. Nearly one-fourth (23.4%) of students reported recently using marijuana in the past year of completing the survey. Males were more likely to report recent marijuana use and past year marijuana use compared to their female counterparts. Results revealed males and females who reported participating in school sports often/a lot were less likely to report recent or past year marijuana use than those who never/seldom participated in school sports. Perceived harm, peer disapproval, and ease of access also differed based on school sports participation for males and females. Conclusions: Sports participation had a protective effect against marijuana use. Increasing peer disapproval and perceived harm while reducing perceived ease of access may be beneficial in reducing marijuana use. Initiatives to reduce substance use among 7th-12th graders should focus on increasing pro-social activities such as school sports participation.","PeriodicalId":90204,"journal":{"name":"Journal of behavioral health","volume":"5 1","pages":"82-86"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2016-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"70808718","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
