We had seen them in an extracellular location and noted them to be present in the areas of pathological plaque formation. Other investigators have found the presence of spirochetes (Lyme and dental) in affected (AD) brains, and these have been correlated with Treponema pallidum. In a recent historical comparison of the pathology of syphilis, the histological findings of syphilis and AD were shown to be exactly the same. Further, spirochetes have been cultured from the affected brains and have been found to make biofilms and beta amyloid precursor protein. Utilizing the same pathological methods as in our prior study, we have found biofilms in an intracellular location. The similarity of this finding to other diseases has been presented; and, the impact of the “intra” versus the “extra” cellular location is discussed.

The pathology of these lesions are usually due to bacterial infections however in exceptional cases such as immunocompromise, fungal agents are also found to be the cause. In this study, we present the case of a 43-year old, immunocompromised, male patient who suffered from a ruptured mycotic aneurysm after undergoing surgical evacuation of a basal ganglia brain abscess. Pathological analysis of the lesion showed that Aspergillus fumigatis was the causative agent. Since these types of lesions are rare, there are few clinical guidelines for treatment. We emphasize that in an immunocompromised patient with sudden neurological deterioration, mycotic intracranial aneurysm should be in the differential diagnosis.

This study assessed 42 patients (34 women) with ages ranging from 30 to 78 years 12 months after the acute phase of CHIKV fever. A control group of 40 volunteers (27 women) with similar social and demographic features as the patients was used for comparison. Although the patients presented some neurologic symptoms during the acute phase of CHIKV infection, recovery was considered complete. They were evaluated using the Medical Outcome Study Short-Form 36 Health Survey (SF-36) in respect to their quality of life 12 months after the acute phase of the disease. In the comparison of the scores between groups, all domains were shown to be statistically significant showing a lower quality of life for the patients who had suffered neuro-chikungunya, although no patient had any apparent neurological sequela of CHIKV infection.

In AD and normal brains, senile plaques are primarily composed of amyloid-s peptides (As P) with aluminum (Al). Evidence suggests the oligomerization of As P is part of the molecular mechanism of AD pathogenesis by forming neurotoxic amyloid channels. However, the relationship between Al and AD has been a subject of scientific debate for many years. The complex nature of Al bioavailability has made it difficult to evaluate its toxicity to the human brain. In 2004, Al concentration in CSF of AD patients analyzed to be 1.6 ± 0.4 times higher than normal people. Importantly, AD patients with more Al in CSF showed less MMSE score, indicating Al may decrease cognitive ability. Recently, Al accumulations in sporadic AD and familial AD brains were reported to be much higher than in normal control brains. Above its neurotoxicity, Al3+ has a crucial role as a cross-linker in s-amyloid oligomerization. Therefore, I propose a hypothesis that s-amyloid oligomerizes with Al, forming non-specific cation amyloid channels in cell membranes, which allows calcium to enter cells and finally causes neuronal death by together with Al’s own neurotoxicity.

Until recently, no cases of severe neuro-invasive SFV infections were reported. In this study, we \u0000describe two cases of encephalitis associated with seroconversion to SFV acquired in Israel. We further try to \u0000postulate about the infecting strain of the SFV, its local phlebotomine vector, and the reasons for the emergence of \u0000this infection in Israel. \u0000Methods: Clinical data were collected from hospital records. Laboratory diagnosis was obtained using mosaic \u0000indirect immunofluorescence tests (IFT) against several SFVs. \u0000Results: Two patients with severe encephalitis presented during the same 2014 summer season. Both have \u0000acquired their infection in Hasharon district of central coastal Israel. Their encephalitis developed after a prolonged \u0000prodrome of 7 and 14 days, and was associated with severe neurological complications. Both patients exhibited a \u0000late seroconversion beyond twenty days from symptom onset. \u0000Conclusion: SFVs are possible etiological agents of febrile illnesses and central nervous system infections in \u0000Israel. The SFV we report is suspected to be a Toscana virus-like strain, and is probably transmitted by Phlebotomus \u0000perfiliewi.
