However, images of ants in Burmese amber show that some extinct types existed back then. By the mid-Cenozoic, most fossil ants could be assigned to extant genera. The present work examines ancient associations between ants and other organisms based on fossils in amber. Topics include fungal associates, interactions with higher plants, associations between ants and arachnids, ants bringing food to the colony, insect parasites and predators, nematode parasites, ants visiting flowers, ant mimics and gut microbes in ants. All specimens included in the present work are listed with the amber source, present location, published accounts and accession numbers of those in the Poinar amber collection (PAC).</p>","PeriodicalId":8978,"journal":{"name":"Biologia","volume":"61 1","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":1.5,"publicationDate":"2024-04-30","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"140831030","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":4,"RegionCategory":"生物学","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Generally, female scorpions display aggressive sexual behavior in response to male reproductive advances when they are not receptive. However, female receptivity can vary over time, depending on environmental factors favorable to reproduction Thus, the current study aimed to examine the correlation between the number of reproductive attempts by male <i>Tityus pusillus</i> scorpion and mating success over time, considering the female's behavioral response. Behavioral analyses were monthly conducted on 150 <i>T</i><i>. pusillus</i> field-caught pairs over a five-month period. Our results indicate that despite females reacting aggressively to male advances, the persistence of the male has a positive effect in courtship probability. Furthermore, we observed variations in female behavior throughout the studied period, suggesting that female receptivity might be linked to the reproductive season. Therefore, environmental factors may play a significant role in regulating scorpion reproduction in Neotropical forests.</p>","PeriodicalId":8978,"journal":{"name":"Biologia","volume":"60 1","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":1.5,"publicationDate":"2024-04-30","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"140831511","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":4,"RegionCategory":"生物学","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The application of biofertilizers is an eco-friendly approach to facilitate plant growth and development. Biofertilizers are mainly composed of living or dormant microbes, which are usually applied to the soil. These microbes encourage plant growth by a wide variety of mechanisms which includes phytohormone production, nutrient solubilization, biocontrol ability, etc. In the present study, bacterial cultures were isolated from nutrient-rich sample sources and screened for plant growth-promoting (PGP) traits. After several PGP trait screenings; two bacterial consortia that could aid the growth and development of plants were formulated. Further, these screening results were validated by applying selected bacterial strains and the prepared consortia on tomato plants (<i>Solanum lycopersium</i>). The growth parameters were evaluated at the plant's germinative, vegetative, and reproductive stages. The biochemical characteristics under the experimental conditions were also examined at various intervals. The results revealed that both our consortia were able to stimulate the growth and development of the host plant. Hence, the formulated bacterial combinations have real potential to become ecologically sustainable biofertilizers.</p>","PeriodicalId":8978,"journal":{"name":"Biologia","volume":"3 1","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":1.5,"publicationDate":"2024-04-19","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"140628570","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":4,"RegionCategory":"生物学","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Consequently, this microinvertebrates group is considered part of the less-known metazoan taxa and its biodiversity knowledge is still far from being understood. To bring light to the past, present, and future understanding of Gastrotricha biodiversity literature, we conducted the first study aimed to quantitatively and qualitatively evaluating the global research productivity on this clade by carrying out a bibliographic survey in Web of Science and Scopus databases using bibliometric tools. We found 523 studies published between 1904 and 2022 and detected i) a high prevalence of “new species’’ as a keyword in the literature, indicating the youth of our knowledge on biodiversity of this phylum; ii) the formation of clusters of interacting researchers around well-established veterans’ researchers in Europe; but also, iii) the formation of new research centers training new researchers in recent decades around the world. However, we also found that there are gaps in the accessibility of past literature in the main search tools. We believe that it is time to explore new facets of Gastrotricha research and we hope that our study can provide a guide for future research development to shape more effective policies for biodiversity discovery and conservation initiatives.</p>","PeriodicalId":8978,"journal":{"name":"Biologia","volume":"7 1","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":1.5,"publicationDate":"2024-04-16","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"140608836","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":4,"RegionCategory":"生物学","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Six sampling stations were determined and the samplings were carried out seasonally. Biotic and diversity indices based on benthic macroinvertebrates have been applied using Asterics software. Pearson’s based correlations were applied to the indices in order to determine the proper biotic indices. A total of 37 taxa which belong to Gastropoda, Oligochaeta, Crustacea and Insecta were detected. The dominant group of the benthic macroinvertebrates was Insecta with 26 taxa. According to the result of ANOSIM (Analysis of Similarity); no statistically significant difference was found between the seasonal distributions of the species (<i>p</i> = 0.267; <i>R</i>: 0.038). According to the MANOVA (Multivariate Analysis of Variance) result, the seasons didn’t show a significant difference on the linear combination with environmental variables (<i>p</i> = 0.138 &gt; 0.05). According to the results of CCA (Canonical Correlation Analysis), it was determined that the groups known for their sensitivity to pollution showed a positive correlation with the DO and pH variables, while the groups with high tolerance levels and containing many species as pollution indicators showed a positive correlation with the temperature, TU and EC variables. As a result of this research, the water quality of the Kum Stream was determined as polluted. Different soil management practice alternates SOM but the storing C to soil structure formation in vineyard soils is not sufficiently studied. In addition, understanding the impact of soil management practices in vineyard on changes in SOM and soil structure is crucial for sustainable viticulture. In this study conducted in a productive vineyard near Nitra city, Slovakia, we investigated the dynamics of individual size-fractions of water-stable aggregates (WSA) as results of changes in soil organic matter (SOM) under different soil management practices. Five distinct management practices – Intensive tillage system (T); Intensive tillage system with poultry manure (T + M); Strip grass (G); Fertilization in lower rates of NPK (NPK 1) to grass strips; and Fertilization in higher level of NPK (NPK 2) to grass strips were adopted to to be tested. The results have shown that the highest content of soil organic carbon (SOC) 20.3 ± 3.68 g kg−1, labile carbon (CL) 2.71 ± 0.78 g kg−1, and the most favor soil structure were identified in NPK 1, however, the most effectively improved soil structure and C sequestration (SOC: 19.9 ± 3.88 g kg−1; CL: 2.53 ± 0.83 g kg−1) was under G treatment. SOC had a more significant influence on the content of water-stable aggregates than CL. Samples were taken between April 2021 and August 2022, covering the spring, summer, and autumn seasons. A total of 14,839 individuals belonging to 166 taxa were collected. According to the Shannon Diversity Index values, the highest and lowest values were calculated at site 27 (2.45) and 22 (0.22) in spring, site 39 (2.24) and 8 (0.1) in summer, and site 17 (2.28) and 8 (0.17) in autumn, respectively. The highest Shannon all-sample index value was found in the spring season (3.00). Analysis of similarity results (ANOSIM) showed that there were low but significant differences between the spring–summer (<i>p</i> = 0.001; R = 0.236) and spring–autumn (<i>p</i> = 0.001; R = 0.232) seasons in terms of species compositions. The first two axes of the canonical correspondence analysis elucidated 51.4% of the relationships between species and environmental variables, along with the significant effects of altitude, temperature, and pH on the distribution of macroinvertebrates. The ecological quality ratios of the sites were calculated with the Ceyhan Basin Multimetric Index (MMI-C). The ecological status of sites was evaluated over three seasons and divided into the following categories: 19 good, 16 moderate, 3 poor, and 4 bad.
