With the growing population of older adults in the United States and globally, strategies that reduce the risk of becoming injured need to be developed, and diagnostic tools and treatments that may benefit this group need to be explored. Particular attention needs to be given to polypharmacy, drug interactions, the use of anticoagulants, safety issues in the living environment, elder abuse, and alcohol consumption. Low-mechanism falls should prompt health care providers to consider the possibility of head injury in elderly patients. Early and tailored management of our seniors following a mild TBI can provide them with the best possible quality of life. This review will discuss the current literature on mild TBI in the older adult, address gaps in research, and discuss the implications for future care of the older TBI patient.</p>","PeriodicalId":89757,"journal":{"name":"Current translational geriatrics and experimental gerontology reports","volume":"1 3","pages":"135-142"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2012-09-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"https://sci-hub-pdf.com/10.1007/s13670-012-0019-0","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"31361432","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"OA","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The main cause is fall, followed by motor vehicle accidents. This review article summarizes different aspects of geriatric traumatic brain injury, including epidemiology, pathology, and effects of comorbidities and pre-injury medications such as antiplatelets and anticoagulants. Functional outcome with or without surgical intervention, cognitive outcome, and psychiatric complications are discussed. Animal models are also reviewed in attempt to explain the relationship of aging and outcome, together with advances in stem cell research. Though elderly people in general did fare worse after traumatic brain injury, certain \"younger elderly\" people, aged 65-75 years, could have a comparable outcome to younger adults after minor to moderate head injury.</p>","PeriodicalId":89757,"journal":{"name":"Current translational geriatrics and experimental gerontology reports","volume":"1 ","pages":"171-178"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2012-07-06","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC3758513/pdf/","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"31714958","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"OA","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
