The cardiovascular parameters measured are blood pressure (systolic and diastolic), pulse rate and mean arterial blood pressure by auscultatory method using stethoscope and sphygmomanometer. The pulmonary parameters measured are peak expiratory flow rate (PEFR), using Wright peak flow meter and respiratory rate the number times thoracic cage expands and relaxes. The cardiopulmonary parameters of pregnant women decreased significantly (p 0.05), while in second and third trimester the anthropometric parameters decreases significantly (p<.05) with positive correlation when compared to control. The cardiopulmonary parameters in pregnant women showed a significant changes (p<.05) when compare to non-pregnant.","PeriodicalId":89628,"journal":{"name":"The Internet journal of mental health","volume":"464 1","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2008-12-31","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"83010794","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Quantitative and qualitative survey was conducted in various parts of eastern Nigeria to assess the impression of the Nigeria general public on the institution or abolition of user fees in health services. Of the total of 910 study participants, 520(57.1%) supported the institution of user fees while 390(42.9%) supported the abolition. Majority of study participants would prefer paying user fees if they are affordable and would guarantee efficient and quality service. The greater percentage of those advocating for abolition of user fees were the non-literate persons, the unemployed and the aged. If user fees are to be instituted, there is need for a mechanism that will provide some concessions such as appropriate systems of waivers and exemptions to these categories of individuals, so that no one is denied assess to basic health care.","PeriodicalId":89628,"journal":{"name":"The Internet journal of mental health","volume":"17 1","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2008-12-31","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"77742671","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Objectives: A culturally-sensitive wellness pilot study was undertaken to evaluate and expand our understanding of an intervention tailored to educate and empower urban African-American adults. Goals: Identify diabetes, provide wellness, improve lifestyle choices, and to close the gap between the health despaired and the informed consumer. Materials and Methods: African-Americans were recruited from three cities in the southern most region of Florida. Health professionals collaborated to deliver health education in a comprehensive culturally-sensitive format. Results: Gross outcomes included an effective response in hemoglobin glycemic control, cholesterol, triglyceride levels, and body mass indexes. The pilot study indicates a significant trend toward empowerment. Conclusion: This Allengany Franciscan Foundation funded HNWC/TJLMS pilot study demonstrated that culturally-sensitive sessions will enhance self-managed glycemic control and overall wellness in this African-American population. More culturallysensitive wellness intervention formats with increased funding are strongly suggested. These findings may prove valuable to researchers and public health professional in developing culturally-relevant interventions for African-Americans and other minority populations.","PeriodicalId":89628,"journal":{"name":"The Internet journal of mental health","volume":"140 1","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2008-12-31","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"78870677","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
