In the last decade there has been a significant increase in the number of cases of leishmaniasis in the few countries with previously high rates of infection. There were also hundreds of confirmed cases in the United States, most in military personnel whom had returned from Iraq. With more soldiers travelling to Afghanistan, increased cases will likely return to the United States bringing a need for domestic public health to better understand this disease. In this article we review the epidemiology, risk factors, clinical presentations, pschycosocial impact, and methods of treatment and prevention of the disease.","PeriodicalId":89628,"journal":{"name":"The Internet journal of mental health","volume":"13 6 1","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2009-12-31","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"75532833","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

With a markedly weakened left ventricle or right ventricle or both, the volume of blood presented to the heart is in excess of the heart's capacity to move it along. Consequently, fluid builds up behind the heart, as a result of which there is a shift of large volumes of blood from the systemic circulation into the pulmonary (lung) circulation. Despite availability of new therapies, the prevalence of heart failure and hospital admission rates have increased and the World Health Organization (WHO) has recognized heart failure as an epidemic condition in this century. 2","PeriodicalId":89628,"journal":{"name":"The Internet journal of mental health","volume":"8 1","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2009-12-31","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"79759760","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Aim: to determine the awareness of thalassaemia among parents and/or married couples of a rural community in Penang, Malaysia. Methodology: a cross-sectional study design was used. All parents and/or married couples in the defined study area were eligible to participate. A modified version of Thalassaemia Knowledge Questionnaire by Armeli et al was used. The results were analysed using PASW version18. Results: Out of the total 112 respondents, only 52 (46.4%) claimed to know what thalassaemia is and only 3 (5.8%) were tested for thalassaemia. Although half of the participants were aware of thalassaemia, their knowledge of thalassaemia was poor. Most of them knew how thalassaemia can be diagnosed but most did not know the treatment and the prognosis of the illness. Analytical study of the data shows that there is a statistically significant association between the awareness of thalassaemia and individuals of different ages (p=0.025) and different education levels (p=0.003). Conclusion: thalassaemia awareness among the rural community in Penang, Malaysia was poor despite the high prevalence of the disease carriers. Educational effort should be made to improve the awareness of this illness among the rural Malaysian community.","PeriodicalId":89628,"journal":{"name":"The Internet journal of mental health","volume":"50 1","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2009-12-31","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"79788256","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The Cross-Sectional study was conducted to determine the Pulmonary function parameters of the study subjects and to co-relate the Pulmonary function parameters with their occupation. Pulmonary Functions (FVC, FEV1 & FEV1/FVC ratio) was tested with computerized RMS Medspiror in sitting position of 100 grain workers and 100 sedentary workers. The sedentary people were having higher mean of observed FVC, FEV1 & FEV1% of 86.98%, 84.85% & 98.76% as compared to grain workers with 79.52%, 77.59% & 91.82% respectively. By Least Significant Difference (LSD) Post Hoc Range test, it was seen that there was significant difference among the mean of the predicted value of FVC, FEV1, FEV1 % of Grain workers with sedentary. Paucity of data concerning health and safety of agricultural workers provides strong rationale for rural health professionals to initiate research and educational programs focusing on health promotion/safety needs of agricultural workers.","PeriodicalId":89628,"journal":{"name":"The Internet journal of mental health","volume":"53 1","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2009-12-31","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"87366005","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Simpson","doi":"10.5580/e9","DOIUrl":"https://doi.org/10.5580/e9","url":null,"abstract":"On balance, the life expectancy of people with intellectual disability is significantly less than it is for the general population. For the most part, individuals with intellectual disability die from the same diseases as \"the rest of us\": heart disease, stroke and cancer. But for the most part, they die earlier from those same diseases, not because of the special nature of intellectual disability, but because they are less likely to be diagnosed and treated in time, and because they are less likely to be exposed to health promotion and disease prevention information, services and supports. The literature on the subject is clear: overall, the health needs of people with intellectual disability are not being effectively met. In this article, the author discusses the reasons for this state of affairs and suggests ways to correct the condition. INTRODUCTION: LEARNING LESSONS THE HARD WAY A woman with severe intellectual disability and no comprehensible verbal communication was taken to a community health clinic. Support staff were concerned about her disruptive behaviour. They didn’t know how to deal with the behaviour and were worried that it might be an indication of more serious problems. On cursory examination, the attending physician was quick to attribute the behaviour to the nature of the woman’s disability. With some impatience he declared: “What do you expect? She’s mentally retarded!” Unsatisfied with the explanation, support staff insisted that the woman was usually mild mannered and that the disruptive behaviour was out of character. Subsequent investigation found that the woman had a massive gallstone. In this case, a fundamental failure was to only see the patient’s behaviour as representative of a population for whom the physician maintained certain preconceptions. This limited perspective prevented the physician from viewing the patient’s behaviour as descriptive and symptomatic communication. The patient’s behaviour was dismissed as largely inconsequential, and it was only by fortuitous circumstance (determined support staff) that the young woman’s condition was eventually uncovered. Until prodded, the physician was prepared to bypass thorough examination and substitute presumption for diagnosis. THE HEALTH CARE DISPARITY Though the lifespan of individuals with intellectual disability has been steadily increasing, life expectancy is still about 10 years less than for the general population. While aetiology or syndrome-specific factors account for a small portion of the difference, evidence shows that on balance, people with intellectual disability have a high level of undiagnosed and unmanaged health problems. Heart disease, hypothyroidism and osteoporosis are conspicuous amongst those problems. What's more, the research indicates that individuals with intellectual disability are four times more likely than other members of the general population to die prematurely from preventable causes. This suggests that although effective healt","PeriodicalId":89628,"journal":{"name":"The Internet journal of mental health","volume":"14 1","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2009-12-31","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"84949243","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

There is however, a dearth of studies among children in Nigerian population. This study was therefore designed to investigate the mean Q angle values in children with and without PPD, and to contribute data to this field of study.Design: Purposive sampling technique. Participants: One hundred and seventy seven apparently healthy, 10-12 year old school children.Method: The Q angles were measured with a goniometer according to the method of Latinghouse and Trimble. Footprints were also taken to determine the presence or absence of PPD.Results: The mean Q angles of children with and without PPD were 13.98±4.0o and 12.17±3.7o respectively in the right, and 13.08±4.1o and 12.64±3.9o in the left lower limb. An independent t-test comparison of mean Q angles in children with and without PPD showed significant difference at alpha level of 0.05 in the right lower limbs. Mean Q angles of females with and without PPD are 14.18±4.1o and 12.77±3.6o respectively while the mean Q angles of males with and without PPD are 12.77±4.0o and 12.00±4.0oConclusion: Children with PPD had higher mean Q angles than those without PPD and the mean Q angles in the females are higher than those of the males. Recommendation: Children with PPD should be screened for high Q angles, as both have been independently implicated as predisposing factors to several lower limb injuries.","PeriodicalId":89628,"journal":{"name":"The Internet journal of mental health","volume":"14 1","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2009-12-31","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"89041496","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Malondialdehyde (MDA) concentration, Superoxide dismutase and Catalase (CAT) activity represent the lipid peroxidation and spermicidal antioxidant status respectively. The present study aimed to evaluate the relationship of MDA, Superoxide dismutase and Catalase levels with sperm parameters. Materials & methods-Specimens were divided into two groups: Group I Normospermia (n=30); Group II Oligoasthenozoospermia (n=30). Seminal MDA concentration was measured by thiobarbituric acid reaction method. Seminal SOD activity was measured by Marklund and Marklund method. Seminal Catalase activity was measured by potassium dichromate colorimetric assay. Seminal MDA levels, SOD and Catalase activities in both groups were compared. Significance of the data is analyzed using unpaired t-test. Results MDA concentrations in both groups were significantly different (12.65 ± 1.68 nmole/m vs 21.58 ± 1.54 nmole/ml). SOD & Catalase activities in both groups were also significantly different. SOD levels in oligoasthenozoosperia were 27.99 ± 4.36 Units/ml and in normospermia 12.96 ± 3.35 U/ml whereas levels of catalase in oligiasthenozoosperia were 1.36 ± 0.44 Units/mg of protein and normospermia were 5.12 ± 1.03 Units/mg of protein. SOD & Catalase activities were positively and significantly correlated with the sperm concentration and sperm motility. Conclusion : Measurement of seminal MDA concentrations, antioxidant enzymes SOD & CAT can be used as a additional, simple and useful tool in predicting quality of sperm parameters.","PeriodicalId":89628,"journal":{"name":"The Internet journal of mental health","volume":"76 1","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2009-12-31","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"74972379","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Saliva of smokers contains some harmful substances like nicotine which is not found in non-smokers. Smoking tobacco destroys the molecules in saliva which are useful in protecting oral region from cancer. Under normal conditions saliva acts like a protective buffer between toxin and the lining of mouth, but in smokers this buffer nature and protective enzyme becomes non functional or less functional resulting in various oral diseases. In the present study, Fouriertransform infrared spectro-microscopy was used for the analysis of saliva sample for the detection of marker for smokers. The analysis included 68 individuals; the samples were classified as 23 non-smokers saliva sample, 18 samples of active smokers and 27 samples of past smokers. Samples of active smokers were collected based on time intervals (15 minutes before smoking, immediately after smoking, 30 minutes after smoking and 1 hour after smoking). Several interesting peaks have been identified as the marker for the smokers from saliva. The peaks at 737cm, 1659 cm, 2146 cmand 3414 cm were significantly altered in the absorption level in active smokers and past smokers when compared with the non-smokers. Analysis based on the time scale suggests that about one hour time interval was required for regaining original spectral position of active smokers. Our study also indicates that the stable marker was possible for active smokers by analyzing the past smokers spectral pattern. Hence these parameters could be used as a basis for developing a spectral method in detection of active smokers using their salivary sample.","PeriodicalId":89628,"journal":{"name":"The Internet journal of mental health","volume":"90 1","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2009-12-31","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"79586306","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
