It was a cross sectional study. A total of 2465 married females constituted the study sample. The variables studied were age, education of husband, education of subject, type of family, parity, and number of male children. There were 12.9% non users, 49.5% were using spacing methods and 37.6% had accepted permanent method. A highly statistical significant association was observed between parity and contraceptive usage. Education of husband and education of study subjects significantly effects the choice of family planning method. The acceptance for permanent methods of family planning was higher in subjects having 1or 2 male children. Only 1.2% couples accepted sterilization without having a male child while the acceptance of sterilization was 52.9% among subjects having two living sons.","PeriodicalId":89628,"journal":{"name":"The Internet journal of mental health","volume":"88 1","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2009-12-31","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"73200837","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Methods: A cross sectional study was conducted in the Immunization Clinic, Government Rajindra Hospital, Patiala (Punjab) among 1000 married women of reproductive age group to find the extent of unmet need and factors affecting it.Results: 16% of women of reproductive age had unmet need. The overall unmet need was low at the beginning of reproductive age, but it increased and reached a peak in late twenties and then declined. Maximum unmet need was after the birth of one (19.93%) child; more in illiterate women (23.26%), in females belonging to joint family (18.49%) and in the rural areas (19.02%).Conclusion: Unmet need is higher in more fertile age group; therefore family planning programme should focus this age group, target illiterate people, and rural areas.","PeriodicalId":89628,"journal":{"name":"The Internet journal of mental health","volume":"12 1","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2009-12-31","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"86603907","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The mechanism of damage involves the generation of free radicals.We evaluated the effect of using an antioxidant ascorbic acid as an adjuvant treatment with Bicalutamide on the androgen sensitive organs of the male Sprague-Dawley rats.Thirty-five adult male Sprague-Dawley rats weighing between 160-180 g were used for the experiment. The animals were randomly selected and divided into seven groups of five rats each. They were given 10 mg/kg or 20 mg/kg body weight of Bicalutamide and 200 mg/kg of Ascorbic acid for three and eight weeks. The animals were sacrificed and the cauda epididymides excised for sperm count and sperm motility analysis.There was observed decrease in semen quality with Bicalutamide that was attenuated by ascorbic acid co-administration. The concomitant administration of ascorbic acid has a protective role on reproductive function in males on Bicalutamide therapy.","PeriodicalId":89628,"journal":{"name":"The Internet journal of mental health","volume":"79 1","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2009-12-31","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"87985404","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Islam, Mahfuzar Rahman","doi":"10.5580/21ba","DOIUrl":"https://doi.org/10.5580/21ba","url":null,"abstract":"Swine influenza virus (SIV) is an infection caused by any strain of the influenza family of viruses that is usually prevalent in pigs. It is also called H1N1 flu, swine flu, hog flu, and pig flu. Actually, swine influenza (swine flu) is a common respiratory disease of pigs caused by type “A” influenza viruses. As of 2009, the known SIV strains include influenza “C” and the subtypes of influenza “A” known as H1N1, H1N2, H3N1, H3N2, and H2N3. Transmission of the virus from pigs to humans is not common and does not always lead to human influenza, often resulting only in the production of antibodies in the blood. If transmission does cause human influenza, it is called Zoonotic swine flu. Symptoms of Zoonotic swine flu in humans are similar to those of influenza and of influenza-like illness in general, namely chills, fever, sore throat, muscle pains, severe headache, coughing, weakness and general discomfort. People with regular exposure to pigs are at increased risk of swine flu infection. The meat of an infected animal poses no risk of infection when properly cooked. Infact, it is a literature work. So, the objective of this paper is to study the present global situation of swine flu with its historical perspective.","PeriodicalId":89628,"journal":{"name":"The Internet journal of mental health","volume":"32 1","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2009-12-31","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"91243382","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The usefulness of educational intervention for improving the blood pressure status of market women was assessed in this interventional community based study. The socio-demographic data, blood pressure, body mass index (BMI) and awareness of the blood pressure status of the subjects were documented. Counseling of the respondents on hypertension, risk factors, drug compliance and life style modification took place within 3 months. The results showed that 59% of the respondents were unaware of their BP status, 21.5% were discovered to have elevated blood pressure. Among those found to be hypertensive only 30.2% were on medication and none of them had effective BP control. At post intervention, all (100%) of the subjects now had good knowledge of their BP status and 86.05% had effective control of their B.P. Lifestyle modification of respondents including their body mass index also slightly improved post intervention. This study establishes that blood pressure status of individuals in the community could be enhanced by an educational intervention strategy.","PeriodicalId":89628,"journal":{"name":"The Internet journal of mental health","volume":"27 6","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2009-12-31","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"72372442","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Body Mass Index is a formula most commonly used to assess body fat percentage. However, the formula contains significant limitations and inefficiencies. As a result, the Health Index equation was developed as an alternative to the BMI. Data from 79 healthy individuals, as defined by the absence of metabolic syndrome risk factors, was collected and a relationship was established between their BMI and body fat percentage. The results showed the BMI produced a poor correlation with the body fat percentage while the Health Index metric produced a stronger correlation to actual body fat percentage.","PeriodicalId":89628,"journal":{"name":"The Internet journal of mental health","volume":"29 1","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2009-12-31","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"86985050","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

It was found that there was a high number of respondents (69%) using one or more of these toxic products in treating common ailments. Products commonly used topically and ingested include brake fluid (hydraulic fluid), kerosene, petrol, crude oil and engine oil. It is believed that the lack of affordable healthcare coupled with high illiteracy encourages the use of these products. It is suggested that the relevant Government agencies such as the Ministry of Health and the National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC) be made aware of these findings in order to educate the populace on the dangers of these products.","PeriodicalId":89628,"journal":{"name":"The Internet journal of mental health","volume":"133 1","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2009-12-31","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"77421667","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Level of dependency and cognitive function of these patients were assessed using Barthel scale and Abbreviated mental test (AMT) respectively. Median age of the study population was 67 years; majority of them were men. Most of them were admitted in the medical ward and the median time to be labeled as bed blocker was 32 days. These bed blockers were a weak group of patients with an average 3.1 pathology per case. Majority of them suffered from neurological disorders and cardiovascular disease. High level of dependence was noted with a mean Barthel score of 29.68 (Range 0 -100). Low levels of cognitive function was also noted among these patients with a mean AMT of 4.76 (Range 0 -10).These findings demonstrate that the bed blockers in McGann hospital suffer not only from genuine health problems but also have a high dependency level in activities of daily living which hamper their discharge to the community. Community based rehabilitation using an intersectoral approach may help at least the less dependent to return home.","PeriodicalId":89628,"journal":{"name":"The Internet journal of mental health","volume":"172 1","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2009-12-31","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"77545394","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
