The present study investigated the changes in expression of mGluR1α and mGluR2/3 during postnatal development. Rats at postnatal day (PND) 1, PND 7, PND 14 and adult stage were employed. Results of the immunofluorescence showed that mGluR1α immunoreactivity was primarily found in the neuropil, and an increasing trend was observed. An intense level of mGluR2/3 immunoreactivity was observed in the fiber bundles of the striatum of PND 1 rats but not in rats of other ages. A large proportion of mGluR2/3 but not mGluR1α immunoreactivities were found to be colocalized with synaptic vesicle protein two immunoreactive glutamatergic terminals. The present results demonstrate that mGluR2/3 is primarily expressed in glutamatergic axonal terminals in the striatum, but mGluR1α is expressed in postsynaptic elements in the striatum. There is a differential expression of mGluR1α and mGluR2/3 in rat striatum during postnatal developmental stages.","PeriodicalId":89607,"journal":{"name":"Neuroembryology and aging","volume":"3 1","pages":"36 - 41"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2005-06-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"https://sci-hub-pdf.com/10.1159/000085403","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"65286700","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Under either physiological or pathological conditions, apoptosis is mostly driven by interactions among several families of protein, i.e. caspases, Bcl-2 family proteins, and inhibitor of apoptosis proteins (IAP). Other proteases such as granzyme B, calpain and cathepsin have also been demonstrated to play a vital role in apoptosis occurring under certain physiological states. This review focuses on the major apoptotic signaling pathways and the intracellular components involved in this process. Recent advances in our understanding of the role of apoptosis in neurodegenerative events and the clues they provide for the design of future preventive and therapeutic modalities will also be discussed.","PeriodicalId":89607,"journal":{"name":"Neuroembryology and aging","volume":"3 1","pages":"47 - 59"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2005-06-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"https://sci-hub-pdf.com/10.1159/000085404","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"65286779","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

In PSN pathogenesis, the developmental discrepancy between neurons exhibiting late maturation and vessels showing an early increase in the basis pontis and subiculum may predispose fetuses and neonates to PSN. Ischemia, hyperoxygenemia, hypocarbia and hypoglycemia have been reported to be causal factors. Apoptotic neurons are associated with activation of caspase-3, and remaining neurons are accompanied by growth factors in glial cells. Nestin, which is abundant in multipotential stem cells, is reactivated in cells surrounding the subacute and chronic lesions. Thus, local plasticity may be activated both in necrotic and apoptotic cell death, and the period of regeneration is important for the treatment of PSN.","PeriodicalId":89607,"journal":{"name":"Neuroembryology and aging","volume":"3 1","pages":"42 - 46"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2005-06-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"https://sci-hub-pdf.com/10.1159/000085565","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"65288152","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

A 3-month-old female patient with myelomeningocele was examined with cranial and spinal MRI. The imaging protocol included T1- and T2-weighted sequences. MRI revealed typical findings of C2 malformation and a thyroglossal cyst located at the base of the tongue. We hypothesize that occurrence of C2 malformation and the thyroglossal cyst is not totally independent, but instead, their association shown in the present case may be related to incomplete embryonic development. However, further studies and research are needed in order to prove this hypothesis.","PeriodicalId":89607,"journal":{"name":"Neuroembryology and aging","volume":"3 1","pages":"65 - 68"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2005-06-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"https://sci-hub-pdf.com/10.1159/000085406","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"65286852","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

In this study, structural characteristics of vessels in the GE of preterm neonates were studied with either collagen IV immunohistochemistry, which labels all vessels, or alkaline phosphatase enzyme histochemistry, a marker of arterioles and capillaries but not venules. Brains from 17 preterm neonates ranging in age from 24 to 38.5 weeks postconception were used to test the hypothesis that GE arterioles connect to a peculiar capillary bed that includes large sinusoidal vessels. Clearly identifiable arterioles were traced to their terminal branch points. We found that arterioles connected directly to alkaline phosphatase-positive capillaries with a diameter of approximately 5 µm, and not to large-diameter thin-walled sinusoids. The average diameter of GE capillaries measured only 0.30 µm, greater than that of capillaries in the cortex of the same specimen. Although it is commonly held that GE capillaries are structurally immature, our results indicate that arterial blood reaching the GE is delivered to a typical capillary bed.","PeriodicalId":89607,"journal":{"name":"Neuroembryology and aging","volume":"3 1","pages":"4 - 12"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2005-06-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"https://sci-hub-pdf.com/10.1159/000085399","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"65286505","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The developmental profile of STC expression in mouse brains indicated that the transcripts were detectable on E12 and peaked on E16, and days 1 and 2 of postnatal stages and then declined slowly. There was no observable difference in the descending trends of STC expression in both male and female mouse brains at different postnatal periods (3, 5, 7, 9 and 11 weeks). As concerns the spatial distribution, the results indicated a differential expression of STC in the various regions of the brain; the highest level was detected in the striatum, followed by the hippocampus, parietal cortex, hypothalamus, frontal cortex, cerebellum and brain stem. Similar patterns of expression were observed in the mature rat brain. Our findings lend further support to the notion that STC is involved in distinct neural functions.","PeriodicalId":89607,"journal":{"name":"Neuroembryology and aging","volume":"2 1","pages":"139 - 142"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2004-08-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"https://sci-hub-pdf.com/10.1159/000079399","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"65234354","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

They serve as mediators of neurotransmission and pacemakers of the peristaltic movement of the gut. Previous investigations on patients with Hirschsprung’s disease and mice with aganglionic megacolon showed contrasting results on the relationship between the abnormalities of ICCs and enteric neurons. In order to ascertain whether the development of ICCs is also perturbed in the aganglionic segment of the gut, we used Dominant megacolon (Dom) mice as an animal model and an antibody specific to c-kit (a tyrosine kinase receptor expressed in ICCs) to examine the spatial distribution of ICCs in the developing and adult colon. Our results showed that in the wild-type adult colon, ICCs were bipolar in shape in the smooth muscle layer and dense networks of ICCs were observed in the myenteric and deep muscular plexuses, whereas in the aganglionic colon of Dom heterozygous mice, no ICCs could be found in the smooth muscle layer and disrupted patterns of ICC networks were observed in the myenteric and deep muscular plexuses. On 14.5 days of development, the levels of expression of c-kit and its ligand (stem cell factor) were similar in the wild-type, heterozygous and homozygous Dom embryos. However, by 18.5 days, the numbers of ICCs were greatly reduced in the myenteric and submucosal plexuses of the terminal colon of the heterozygous embryos comparing with the wild-type counterparts. Based on our results, we postulate that the abnormal development of ICCs may disrupt the neurotransmission and pacemaker activity of the gut, leading to interrupted peristalsis.","PeriodicalId":89607,"journal":{"name":"Neuroembryology and aging","volume":"2 1","pages":"156 - 163"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2004-08-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"https://sci-hub-pdf.com/10.1159/000079402","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"65234860","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
