Candida albicans is the most common fungal pathogen. It presents in both pathogenic and nonpathogenic states and has been able to develop a myriad of powerful mechanisms that allows for its thriving colonization and subsequent infection of the host under appropriate conditions. The objective of this paper is to evaluate advances in the cellular and molecular mechanisms involved in the diagnosis and identification of oral candidiasis and assess diverse novel treatment modalities for oral candidiasis in the clinical setting. Various cellular and molecular mechanisms have been employed to help elucidate the interactions between Candida organisms and their environment. Polymerase chain reaction analyses, Candida biofilm communication, and recombinant antigen techniques have been found to facilitate explanations of the endurance and continued existence of oral candidiasis, specifically C. albicans. Various modes of treatment, both traditional and innovative, have been utilized to manage oral candidiasis. These include, but are not limited, to the novel use of mucobuccal adhesives, denture liners, mouth rinse and toothpaste combinations as well as probiotic cheese.","PeriodicalId":89507,"journal":{"name":"The open pathology journal","volume":"27 1","pages":"8-12"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2011-03-31","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"82470158","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

They are usually not painful and are often overlooked by the patient until they become symptomatic or are identified by their dental healthcare provider. Since they may be present for weeks to months, it is common to see ulceration of the surface tissue due to trauma. They have a recurrence rate of 5 - 20% after excision depending on the diagnosis, the completeness of the surgical removal, and the ability to address the local irritating factors associated with their etiology. It is recommended to obtain histologic diagnoses for the lesions since their clinical appearances can be similar amongst various lesions, but the recurrence rates are different. The treatment for all common reactive lesions includes surgical excision by scalpel, laser, or radial/ electrosurgery. Treatment should also include removal of the underlying etiology through curettage of tooth accretions, replacement of defective restorations, and elimination of traumatic habits. Regular dental hygiene maintenance with professional follow-up care should reduce the incidence of recurrence for most types of gingival lesions. This review of identification and treatment of gingival lesions includes the newly recognized localized juvenile spongiotic gingival hyperplasia, which should become part of the differential diagnosis for reactive lesions in juvenile patients.","PeriodicalId":89507,"journal":{"name":"The open pathology journal","volume":"17 1","pages":"23-32"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2011-03-31","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"81888330","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

However, telomere length of lung resident cells such as alveolar macrophages (AMs) has not been evaluated. Aim: We evaluated effect of tobacco smoking on telomere length in AMs. Methods: AMs were obtained from nine non-smokers (mean age 24.6 years, mean FEV1/FVC 93.8%) and ten healthy smokers (mean age 25.2 years, >10 pack-years, mean FEV1/FVC 90.6%). We also analyzed tissue macrophages from eight moderate to severe COPD patients (mean age 68.3 years, >10 pack-years, mean FEV1/FVC 54.2%, mean %pred. FEV1 48.8%), age-matched nine healthy smokers (mean age 67.1 years, >10 pack- years, mean FEV1/FVC 83.7%, mean % pred. FEV1 82.4%), and eight healthy non-smokers (mean age 71.2 years, mean FEV1/FVC 84.6%, mean %pred. FEV1 84.1%). Centromere signals and telomere length were analysed using quantitative fluorescence in situ hybridization (QFISH) and confocal microscopy. Results: Telomere length was reduced in bronchoalveolar lavage macrophages of younger smokers compared with that observed in healthy non-smoker's AMs, Importantly, there was no quantitative difference in centromere signals between smokers and non-smokers. A shorter telomere length was also seen in tissue macrophages from older smokers with or without COPD compared with non-smokers. However there was no difference in telomere length between healthy smokers and smokers with COPD. Conclusion: Tobacco smoking enhances telomere shortening in AMs from patients with and without COPD.","PeriodicalId":89507,"journal":{"name":"The open pathology journal","volume":"2 1","pages":"23-29"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2010-04-15","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"73709086","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

We previously demonstrated a role for G1 to S phase cell cycle regulators in ALS with increased levels of hyperphosphorylated retinoblastoma (ppRb) and E2F-1 in ALS spinal cord motor neurons. In this study we examined the levels of the cell cycle checkpoint tumor suppressor protein p53 with concurrent changes in cell death markers during ALS. Expression and subcellular distribution of p53, retinoblastoma, Bax, Fas, and caspases were explored by immunoblot, immunohistochemistry and double-label confocal microscopy in the spinal cord and motor cortex of ALS and control subjects. We identified elevated levels of p53 in ALS spinal cord motor neurons but not neurons in the motor cortex. In addition, there was an increase in Bax, Fas, caspases-8 and -3 proteins in ALS spinal motor neurons. While caspase-3 and TUNEL labeled neurons were positive for ppRb, E2F-1 and p53 in spinal motor neurons, and Fas co-localized with caspase-8 in spinal motor neurons, we failed to observe these results in large neurons in the motor cortex of ALS subjects. We have linked p53 and activation of G1 to S phase cell cycle regulators to an apoptotic mode of cell death ALS spinal cord motor neurons.</p>","PeriodicalId":89507,"journal":{"name":"The open pathology journal","volume":"4 ","pages":"11-22"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2010-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC3092395/pdf/nihms272415.pdf","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"29883729","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"OA","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

We analyzed IL-6 and PCT blood concentrations under the different experimental conditions with Cochran's ˆ Q -criterion for testing null hypotheses. For the surgical patients with local infections and with systemic infections, we did not find a significant decline of IL-6 in the time course at the confidence intervals 0.999, 0.990, and 0.950. No differences in PCT concentrations were found for the various experimental conditions. The time course of IL-6 did not change significantly with medium and high severity trauma, whereas PCT declined over time with significance levels 0.990 and 0.950. The measurement of IL-6 is predominantly a research tool at present. There are no absolute indications for routine measurements. Regarding PCT, our results do not point to this marker as a valid predictor of bacterial infections including sepsis during the early period after trauma.","PeriodicalId":89507,"journal":{"name":"The open pathology journal","volume":"74 1","pages":"124-130"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2009-11-03","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"76411575","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

SOX9 has also been detected in metaplastic carcinomas of the breast exhibiting chondroid differentiation so it became of interest to examine SOX9 in other breast carcinomas and normal breast. Normal breast lobules were studied immunohistochemically for SOX9 along with examples of metaplastic breast carcinoma exhibiting chondroid differentiation, lobular neoplasia (ALH/LCIS), invasive lobular carcinomas, and ductal carcinomas (invasive and in situ). SOX9 was identified solely in the nucleus in over 90% of the normal breast epithelial cells examined. In 10 of 12 breast carcinomas exhibiting chondroid metaplasia, and in 15 of 16 invasive lobular carcinomas, SOX9 was present primarily in the nucleus much like that seen in normal breast epithelium. In 14 of 20 invasive ductal carcinomas, however, it was missing or identified mainly in the cytoplasm of the malignant cells. The functional importance of SOX9 in the breast is unknown although transcription factors involved with the development of certain tissues may have similar capabilities in other organs. The retention of SOX9 in the nucleus of metaplastic or lobular carcinomas could indicate some functional expression of this protein in these tumors with an even more compelling reason why it is often restricted to the cytoplasm, or missing, in ductal carcinomas of the breast.","PeriodicalId":89507,"journal":{"name":"The open pathology journal","volume":"44 1","pages":"118-123"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2009-09-07","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"74244636","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
