These lesions are considered to represent a benign reactive process that chiefly affect young adults and mimic testicular tumors. We report a case of a 35 year old male who presented with a painless testicular mass since 2 year. This case is reported due to its extreme rarity and highlights the need to incorporate this rare tumor as a differential diagnosis in young adults with testicular mass.","PeriodicalId":89507,"journal":{"name":"The open pathology journal","volume":"197 1","pages":"1-3"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2014-06-13","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"73851704","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Generally, < 90% tumor necrosis predicts an unfavorable prognosis and can influence post-operative therapy. Thus, accurate, reproducible, microscopic measurement of tumor necrosis is imperative. Treated osteosarcomas contain a variety of morphologic patterns making quantitative assessment difficult. Whether residual tumor cartilage or widely dispersed atypical cells in fibrous stroma represent prognostically significant “viable” tumor is unknown and, to our knowledge, has not been formally tested. Full cross sections of the post-chemotherapy resection specimens of 106 osteosarcomas were evaluated for the presence and pattern of viable tumor using two methods. First, we counted as viable only dense areas of mitotically-active atypical cells (“stringent”). Second, we also included as viable rare (<25 / 400X field), atypical cells in fibrous stroma and/or tumor cartilage (“inclusive”). Treatment response was judged as good (>90% necrosis) or poor (<90% necrosis) and correlated with disease-free survival using the Kaplan-Meier method. Eleven tumors (10%) had no evidence of residual tumor after chemotherapy. The remainder contained different proportions of tightly-packed, atypical, mitotically-active cells (n=73, 69%), isolated atypical cells in fibrosis or necrosis (n=35, 33%) and/or tumor cartilage (n=10, 8%). Disease-free survival correlated significantly with chemotherapy response using the “stringent” method (p=0.008) but not the “inclusive” method (p=0.34). These data confirm that the percent tumor necrosis after chemotherapy is an important prognostic indicator, but areas of tumor cartilage or widely distributed, mitotically-inactive, atypical cells should not be measured as residual viable tumor.","PeriodicalId":89507,"journal":{"name":"The open pathology journal","volume":"18 1","pages":"7-15"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2013-09-06","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"77172719","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Several reports have shown that lysosomal storages can perturb the redistribution of lysosomal lipids, cholesterol in particular. Our goal was to analyse the effect of the intralysosomal accumulation of sucrose on the transcription factors Sterol Regulatory Element Binding Proteins (SREBPs): key actors of the regulation of lipid metabolism. We show that 143B cells grown in the presence of sucrose present a modified distribution of non-esterified cholesterol, which is associated with an increase in the activity of SREBPs. The activation of these transcription factors is associated with an increase in the expression of some of their target genes: HMG-CoA synthase and mevalonate kinase, and with an increase in total lipid biosynthesis. Finally, using siRNA interference we demonstrate that SREBP-2 but not SREBP-1a is responsible for the increase in the expression of the genes encoding these two enzymes.","PeriodicalId":89507,"journal":{"name":"The open pathology journal","volume":"16 1","pages":"16-27"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2013-08-15","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"78365181","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

DNA sequencing of the BRCA2 gene, located on 13q12, showed evidence of both germline and tumor specific alterations but the frequency of changes was low and did not fit the classic Knudsen two-hit gene inactivation model. To further investigate chromosome 13q12-14 in ESCC, quantitative expression measurements were performed on BRCA2 and 11 neighboring genes in matched normal epithelium and tumor from 17 cases. Transcript analysis showed normal levels of five genes, tumor down-regulation of two genes (TNFRS19 and TPT1), and tumor up- regulation of five genes, including BRCA2. No evidence of BRCA2 loss-of-function was detected based on reduced mRNA in tumor cells. Between 13q12.3 (KATNAL1) and 13q12.3-q13 (CCNA1) five adjacent genes showed increased mRNA expression raising the possibility of a DNA amplicon; however, qPCR analysis showed normal DNA amounts in this region. CCNA1 transcript was significantly up-regulated in tumors and was thus further interrogated at the protein level by immunohistochemistry. CCNA1 staining was restricted to normal basal epithelium and was not expressed in more superficial, differentiated regions. In contrast, the CCNA1 protein was ubiquitously and highly expressed throughout tumor foci. Overall, these data from a relatively small number of cases (17) suggest that TNFRS19 and TPT1 deserve further investigation as candidate tumor suppressor genes in esophageal cancer in a larger patient series; BRCA2 mRNA is increased in the tumors, likely as a compensatory response to the marked DNA damage that is present in these lesions; and, CCNA1 was identified as a novel up-regulated gene in ESCC.","PeriodicalId":89507,"journal":{"name":"The open pathology journal","volume":"8 1","pages":"8-16"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2012-08-23","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"85689344","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Therefore, the aim of this study is to analyze the hypothalamic distribution of vasopressin (VAS) Angiotensin II (AGII) and tyrosine-hydroxylase (TH) in a case of SIADH and compare it with a case without SIADH. Two hypothalamus taken from a 66 year-old man with SIADH, and the other from a 63 year-old man without SIADH, were used. An immunohistochemical study was performed using anti-VAS, anti-AGII and anti-TH as primary antibodies. The vasopressin immunoreactive material was mainly found in the supraoptic nucleus (SON) and paraventricular nucleus (PVN), but VAS was also shown in the periventricular nucleus, preoptic medial area, perifornical nucleus and hypothalamic lateral area. The AGII was also mainly found in the SON and PVN. The TH was found in the SON, PVN, arcuate nucleus, periventricular nucleus, perifornical nucleus, preoptic medial and lateral area. VAS was less intensive and in a lesser number of cells and fibres in the case of SIADH, as opposed to the AGII and TH which were similar in both cases.","PeriodicalId":89507,"journal":{"name":"The open pathology journal","volume":"21 1","pages":"1-7"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2012-05-11","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"79555786","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The incidence appears to be quite low, but increases with increased quantity and duration of exposure to a causative antigen. In most instances intraoral allergies result in a type IV, delayed contact response that may manifest in various ways including lichenoid reactions, burning mouth/burning lip syndromes, cheilitis and lip swelling, oral granulomatous reactions, gingival hyperplasia, non-specific erythema and edema, ulceration and gingivitis or even periodontitis. In this paper, hypersensitivity reactions to dental metals are reviewed and allergy to dental cast metal alloys is studied in a group of patients presenting with oral features sometimes associated with contact hypersensitivity reactions. Each year, it affects approximately 22,000 Americans and results in approximately 5300 deaths. The five-year survival rate of oral cancer remains low (53% to 60%) for the past three decades and delayed diagnosis has been suggested to be one of the major reasons. The detection and diagnosis of oral cancer is currently based on clinical visual examination and histopathological evaluation of the biopsy material. In responding to the need for early detection of oral cancer, several diagnostic adjuncts have been developed over the years. The purpose of this article is to review the current knowledge about the commercially available diagnostic adjuncts as well as to review the research on the development of the promising tools for the early detection of oral cancer.","PeriodicalId":89507,"journal":{"name":"The open pathology journal","volume":"3 1 1","pages":"3-7"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2011-03-31","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"79889691","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

One of the objectives of GBR is formation of new bone at sites deficient in bone volume. Another objective is to treat fenestrations and dehiscences at implant surfaces as well as defects associated with immediate implant placement into extraction sites. GBR has allowed for placement of restorations at a more ideal location in the oral cavity, thus improving esthetics and function. This paper is a review of current techniques of GBR for ridge preservation. Evaluation of cell proliferation kinetics revealed that both the PDL and perivascular cells from the bone proliferate and migrate into the osseous defect to form the early healing tissue (5). Melcher (6) amended his original hypothesis to include the contribution of the perivascular cells of the bone in periodontal regeneration concluding that cells from both the PDL and alveolar bone are important in formation of new bone, cementum, and functionally oriented PDL (regeneration). The mechanism of new attachment formation was described by a series of studies by Nyman, Karring, Lindhe and others (7-9), and based on this, guided tissue regeneration (GTR) was designated as a periodontal tissue regenerative procedure.","PeriodicalId":89507,"journal":{"name":"The open pathology journal","volume":"16 1","pages":"33-45"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2011-03-31","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"75279615","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
