Greer et al., 1987). SAW resonator devices in the range of 300 MHz to 1 GHz have been laser-trimmed by as much as 100 p.p.m. The laser-trimming process is extended to a variety of new applications, including accurately adjusting the insertion phase shift of AQP SAW delay lines by as much as 90 degrees ; effectively suppressing the distortion caused by the third-order transverse mode in resonators with nonapodized transducers, which usually results in improved insertion phase shift and insertion-loss responses for the device; and frequency trimming, used either to form accurately matched pairs of AQP SAW resonators for high-power applications by effectively doubling the acoustic aperture using two SAW resonators fabricated on the same substrate surface, or to form matched pairs of devices fabricated on opposite surfaces of the same substrate. The latter application is for high-vibration environments, reducing the combined vibration sensitivity due to the cancellation of strain-induced frequency shifts. The influence of laser-trimming on the residual flicker noise and long-term frequency stability of AQP SAW devices is discussed.<<ETX>>","PeriodicalId":89469,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings. Coefficients of the COM equation-excluding electrostatic capacitance, which is evaluated by the finite element method (FEM) as an electrostatic problem-are evaluated from four frequencies at the stop band of the dispersion curve of the SAW transducer in open- and short-circuited states, and the FEM was used to evaluate these frequencies. Closed-form expressions for directivity in terms of these coefficients are obtained. Saturation phenomena of directivity under the condition of phi - phi not= pi /4 and the relation between the directivity and the frequencies at the sides of the stop band are described. Experimental results are given for the thickness-difference-type SPUDTs and SAW filters incorporating SPUDTs on 128 degrees Y-X LiNbO/sub 3/. Comparison with experiments shows that the theoretical predictions are quite good.<<ETX>>","PeriodicalId":89469,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings. Diffraction efficiencies as high as 38% for TE/sub O/ to TE/sub O/ mode diffraction and 32% for TM/sub O/ to TM/sub O/ mode diffraction were achieved at an acoustic drive power of 2.72 mW and a laser wavelength of 1.15 mu m. Double-packet storage is found to provide higher storage capacity with less storage voltage than single-packet storage. For the same SAW (surface acoustic wave) frequency, however, double-packet storage has half the bandwidth of single-packet storage. Intercell diffusion is a key factor that limits the storage capacity of single-packet storage, but it is not a key limiting factor for double-packet storage. Surface extraction can be a significant limiting factor for single-packet storage, if the doping level is too low. It was not found to be a significant factor for double-packet storage. The primary factor limiting the storage capacity of double-packet storage is the delay-line charge capacity.<<ETX>>","PeriodicalId":89469,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings. The operation of the device is similar to that of those using Fourier transform schemes, except that the frequency separation is performed spatially. The programmability and the spectrum monitoring are performed by means of an acoustoelectric effect. The authors demonstrate a bandpass and a band-reject response of the filter with a center frequency of 213 MHz, bandwidth of approximately=26 MHz, insertion loss of approximately=27 dB, and out-of-band rejection of approximately=35 dB. Programmable notch-filter behavior is demonstrated in a direct-sequence spread-spectrum receiver to suppress a single-tone interfering signal.<<ETX>>","PeriodicalId":89469,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings. The system is based on a transducer array that samples an incident wavefront in space. The signals collected from each array element are electronically mixed with a second harmonic signal using an array of mixers. The phase of the difference frequency signal obtained is conjugate with the incident wavefront. The transducer array then retransmits the conjugated signals, leading to a phase-conjugated wavefront which is reconstructed in front of the transducer aperture and is transmitted back into the medium. Experiments at 300 kHz are described and phase conjugation is demonstrated by a 20-element array. It is shown that efficient phase conjugation is possible for angles of incidence extending up to +or-80 degrees .<<ETX>>","PeriodicalId":89469,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings. The models for the filter components, especially gratings, interdigital transducers (IDTs). and multistrip couplers (MSCs), are based on the COM approach, which delivers closed-form expressions. In order to determine the relevant COM parameters, the integrated COM differential equations are compared with analytically derived expressions from the transmission-matrix approach. The most important second-order effects such as energy storage, propagation loss and mechanical and electrical loading are fully taken into account. As an example, the authors investigate a two-pole, acoustically coupled resonator filter at 914.5 MHz on AT quartz. Excellent agreement between theory and measurement is found.<<ETX>>","PeriodicalId":89469,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings. The copolymer has an advantage over VF/sub 2/ in that it does not require prestretching before poling. Thin copolymer films can be cast from solution and then poled using the corona discharge method. As there is a need for small-diameter hydrophones to provide good spatial resolution in measuring highly focused ultrasonic beams, hydrophones with diameter as small as 0.1 mm have been made. Both needle-type and line hydrophones have been tested and their performance reported. In the case of line hydrophones, the output signal is proportional to the line integral of the acoustic pressure, and a computer-tomographic technique was used to reconstruct the beam profiles.<<ETX>>","PeriodicalId":89469,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings. Two different mechanisms for the excitation of STW are considered: electrical excitation by a line charge and mechanical excitation by a line force. The resulting responses of the piezoelectric half-space to these elemental excitations lead to a 2*2 dyadic Green's function G(x,z). It is shown that G(x,z) is capable of describing the mass-loading effect and the natural unidirectionality phenomenon. Based on a reinterpretation of a previous formulation, the complex-valued, frequency-dependent stress distributions on the finger-substrate interfaces induced by the incident STW are calculated exactly. For the calculation of the reexcited acoustic waves, the induced stress is used as the driving term in a first step. The convolution of this equivalent force with the mechanical and the electrical Green's functions yields the scattered-field patterns.<<ETX>>","PeriodicalId":89469,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings. The model results in a complete three-port characterization of the transducer. The three-port description of the transducer (two acoustic ports and one electric port) is obtained by representing the response of the chirped transducer as that of a set of cascaded uniform sections. The three-port solutions for a uniform section of transducer are presented as the results of a coupling-of-modes (COM) analysis. The solution for the transducer's acoustic admittance, a quantity not previously documented in the literature, is included. For verification of the analysis technique, experimental results for a pair of linearly chirped transducers fabricated on 34 degrees quartz are presented. These transducers include a conventional two-electrode per-wavelength transducer and a single-phase unidirectional transducer (SPUDT). Excellent correlation between the theoretical solutions and the experimental measurements is shown.<<ETX>>","PeriodicalId":89469,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings.
