Results show large changes rapidly occurring because of the diffraction effect. Random phase transducers (RPTs) were then introduced for attenuation estimation. RPT can be partially or totally incoherent. New diffraction-calibration curves show that no diffraction occurs with the RPT, all the more as they are totally incoherent. As a consequence, the attenuation is very stable as a function of the probe-sample distance. These observations were confirmed through in vitro measurements on human placentas.<<ETX>>","PeriodicalId":89469,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings. The first is a high-bandwidth PVDF membrane hydrophone with a capacitively coupled signal. The second is a small acousto-optic fiber hydrophone which measures the shock-wave-induced variation of the refractive index of a liquid at the front end of the fiber. The properties of the hydrophones are compared. The first, with a sensitivity of 6 mV/MPa, demonstrates high durability and a 20-MHz bandwidth. The second has equally good characteristics and additionally measures the creation and the time dependence of cavitation bubbles in the liquid.<<ETX>>","PeriodicalId":89469,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings. The Bragg angles of AOTF configurations in which the interaction plane contains both optical axes are determined explicitly and their dependence with respect to the refractive indices and the acoustic-wave propagation direction are treated analytically. It is shown that, in biaxial crystals, up to four noncollinear AOTF configurations can be obtained for certain directions of propagation of the acoustic wave; for any direction of propagation of the acoustic wave, at least two noncollinear configurations are always allowed. There are major differences between AOTF features obtained in biaxial crystals and those obtained in uniaxial crystals. The Bragg angles of noncollinear AOTF configurations in Tl/sub 3/AsS/sub 4/ are determined as an illustrative example. Tl/sub 3/AsS/sub 4/ is biaxial crystal that yields a very high acoustooptic figure of merit and which is highly transparent in the 0.6-10- mu m optical range. For this material the acoustooptic coefficients which may be involved in the AOTF configurations are given.<<ETX>>","PeriodicalId":89469,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings. Even when SAW (surface acoustic wave) frequencies range from 50 to 100 MHz, the effect due to charge trapping can be relevant. This effect has been verified on a damaged Si/SiO/sub 2/ structure, measuring transverse acoustoelectric voltage (TAV) vs. bias voltage at two different frequencies using the fundamental and odd harmonics of the SAW delay line. Measurements show that TAV vs V plots obtained at the fundamental frequency are different from those obtained at the higher frequency. This variation is related to the different influences of traps at low and high frequency. A theoretical model is proposed to explain this frequency dependence.<<ETX>>","PeriodicalId":89469,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings. The rod composite geometry provides materials with enhanced electromechanical coupling and with acoustic impedance close to that of tissue; these factors yield transducers for medical ultrasonic imaging with high sensitivity and compact impulse response. The dice-and-fill technique produces piezocomposites that can be readily formed into complex shapes to facilitate focusing the ultrasonic beam. Proper design of the rod spacing yields materials that exhibit low crosstalk between array elements formed by patterning the electrode alone, without cutting between the elements. In this way, curved annular arrays have been made that provide high-quality clinical images of substantial diagnostic value to physicians. Included is an extensive bibliography of papers documenting the role of piezocomposites in ultrasonic imaging transducers.<<ETX>>","PeriodicalId":89469,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings. Transducers with constant geometric period were chosen for reasons of manufacturability and predictability of electrical characteristics. An analytical method was used to calculate the transducers' relative coupling coefficient. Bulk-wave conversion losses, which are very important for higher-harmonic and STW (surface transverse wave) resonator design considerations, were calculated with two different techniques, a perturbation model and an antenna model. The results show very good agreement with measurements. Various transducer types were realized using the STW on AT-cut quartz, which has higher propagation velocity and lower bulk-wave conversion loss than the Rayleigh wave. A highly developed standard photolithographic process was used for the reproducible fabrication of delay lines with center frequencies up to 2.78 GHz, Q values of 3400 at 2.65 GHz, and an unmatched insertion loss of 15 dB at 2.49 GHz.<<ETX>>","PeriodicalId":89469,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings. It is shown that the spectral decomposition used in the SSP is equivalent to the time-frequency Gabor decomposition. A generalized SSP based on a wavelet decomposition, in which the received signal is decomposed over a basis of elementary wavelets translated in frequency and dilated in time, and followed as in the conventional SSP by an optimization algorithm is introduced. The flexibility in the choice of the wavelet basis allows implementation of efficient signal decomposition. Three wavelet bases are presented: Gaussian-shaped wavelets, binary wavelets, and autoregressive wavelets. Applications of the SSP with wavelet decomposition to noise reduction and deconvolution are illustrated with experimental and simulated data.<<ETX>>","PeriodicalId":89469,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings. The elastic constants and propagation properties of any nonpiezoelectric isotropic, cubic, or even trigonal layer on an arbitrarily anisotropic substrate can be determined with this method. The method was applied to proton-exchanged (PE) lithium niobate in order to determine its as yet unknown elastic constants. Dispersion curves and elastic stiffness constants of PE Y-cut LiNbO/sub 3/ have been evaluated. The results are reliable for waveguides fabricated in diluted melts containing 0.25-2.00 mol.% lithium benzoate. Using the obtained elastic-stiffness constants, SAW propagation properties such as power flow, diffraction, and strain distribution can be analyzed in order to achieve sophisticated design of guided SAW and acoustooptic devices based on PE:LiNbO/sub 3/ waveguides.<<ETX>>","PeriodicalId":89469,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings. A summary is presented of recent progress toward the development of nondestructive techniques to monitor the quality of such bonds. Emphasis is placed on the characterization of a particular microstructural origin of bond weakness, a distributed array of microcracks in the bond plane. Included is a discussion of theories for the interaction of ultrasound with such distributed defects, results of model experiments designed to validate the theories, and applications of techniques based on the resulting understanding to fracture studies of bonded surfaces and to inspection of aircraft engine turbine rotors.<<ETX>>","PeriodicalId":89469,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings.
