Acoustic surface transverse wave (STW) delay lines operating at the fifth harmonic are used as the frequency-controlling element of the VCO. In order to reduce the delay-line electromagnetic feedthrough a three-transducer-type STW filter design is combined with a microstrip rat-race coupler. The filters were designed using advanced analysis methods and fabricated on rotated Y-cut quartz substrates with a standard photolithographic process. The delay lines were characterized by a center frequency of 2.49 GHz, an untuned insertion loss of 22 dB, an unloaded Q value of 1280, and a group delay time of 158 ns. The signal of the VCO is mixed with the local (crystal) oscillator signal multiplied by 32, thus providing an IF (intermediate frequency) signal of 75.4 MHz that feeds the phase-locked loop, which has a bandwidth of 300 kHz. A single-sideband phase-noise-to-carrier ratio of -112 dBc/Hz at 1-kHz offset has been attained.<<ETX>>","PeriodicalId":89469,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings. The method uses a Fourier-series synthesis giving deformation of the free surface and electrical admittance for wide frequency bands by the use of finite element procedures previously developed. These methods were originally developed in the monochromatic case: one of the difficulties of this work was the adaptation and the validation of the methods in the multifrequency excitation cases, more realistic in the area of nondestructive examination (NDE) using ultrasonic methods. Several geometries were then tested, and an experimental confirmation of the results was achieved.<<ETX>>","PeriodicalId":89469,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings. For each SAW-propagation direction, the bulk-wave contribution to the Green's function is approximated by a sum of several decaying sinusoidal waves. Applying a least-squares fitting procedure, the a priori unknown amplitudes, phases, and decay constants are determined. These data are used as input for an analysis program based on the extended angular-spectrum-of-waves formalism. Advantages of this approach are correct consideration of angle-dependent coupling and bulk-wave diffraction, compatibility to SAW-device analysis based on angular-spectrum methods, and moderate CPU-time requirements.<<ETX>>","PeriodicalId":89469,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings. This evaluation shows that this new estimation strategy results in a reduced bound on the estimator variance in comparison with traditional strategies. In order to study global accuracy the expected estimator output is evaluated and the width of the mainlobe and the height of subsidiary peaks are reduced through the use of this estimator. In an experimental study, the predictions are compared with actual values computed from ultrasonic data. Through this investigation, the assumptions of the model are verified and the predicted improvements in local and global accuracy are confirmed.<<ETX>>","PeriodicalId":89469,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings. RIF-1 tumors were insonated (F=1.733 MHz) 10 min after the intravenous injection of Adr (10 and 20 mu g/g). This resulted in an increase in the tumor doubling time and a decrease in the TCD/sub 50/ when compared to ultrasound treatment alone or to the combination of water-bath heating of the tumor and Adr. The enhancement was dependent upon the dose of Adr injected, the intensity of sonication, and the temperature of the tumor. The results suggest that nonthermal mechanisms of ultrasound action are responsible for potentiation of Adr toxicity. The lack of ultrasound enhancement of daunomycin cytotoxicity in vitro is discussed.<<ETX>>","PeriodicalId":89469,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings. Hartmann and B.P. Abbott (1988) into a form useful for modeling an entire SAW (surface acoustic wave) device. Conversion of the three-port P-matrix COM solutions into a standard two-port ABCD matrix form is shown. With the resultant ABCD matrix, graphical results are shown for the full SAW device model including second-order effects and matching circuitry. These results are presented for different types of SAW devices such as those with uniform, apodized, and withdrawal-weighted transducers and are compared with conventional approaches to SAW modeling. Experimental results for various device configurations and metal thicknesses are shown for comparison with predicted model results. In general there is close agreement between experiment and the implementation of COM theory reviewed.<<ETX>>","PeriodicalId":89469,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings. Electrostatic and acoustic interactions are fully taken into account. A full-scale numerical analysis based on a track division approach and an iterative solution of the network equations is presented. The computing time has been reduced to an acceptable level by using a quasi-equidistant track division scheme. The calculated deviation of the transfer function due to the resistivity of the metal is used to correct the result of the diffraction simulation. Metal resistivity and diffraction effects were compensated simultaneously in an in-line filter with a 40% relative bandwidth. The passband and stopband characteristics can be improved over those of an identical design compensated for diffraction only.<<ETX>>","PeriodicalId":89469,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings. Hines (1988). This approach utilizes a double integral reduction technique to determine the tap to tap response, and has been used to analyze various tap configurations on both isotropic and anisotropic substrates. In the present work, the authors give an extension of this analysis technique to model the effects of diffraction on the impulse response of a complete SAW (surface acoustic wave) device. Both isotropic and anisotropic substrates are treated. Also considered are the implications of the two-dimensional nature of the mathematical formulation of the model, and how the results of this formulation influence the validity of the model. Comparison is made between theoretical and experimentally observed device performance. The potential exists for this analysis technique to be applied to broadband diffraction compensation.<<ETX>>","PeriodicalId":89469,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings.
