A redesign of a wing of a Scottish Borders local authority residential care home to provide an intermediate care resource was carried out in 2008–09 and fully evaluated. This paper presents the main findings of the evaluation and concludes that the redesign has demonstrated an effective model that can be a transferable framework to deliver intermediate care in other residential care homes.","PeriodicalId":89406,"journal":{"name":"Journal of care services management","volume":"4 1","pages":"286-294"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2010-09-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"https://sci-hub-pdf.com/10.1179/175016810X12773688140383","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"65651734","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The aim was to improve the quality of end of life care received by older people with dementia, through the use of end of life care tools, such as the Gold Standards Framework and the Liverpool Care of the Dying Pathway. An evaluation, undertaken by LJMU, showed that there were many resultant quality benefits. The integral economic appraisal indicated that the proportion of patients who died in their preferred place of death increased following the initiative. But primary care trusts (PCTs) could not expect to make cash savings, to help fund such education and training programmes, unless there were associated reductions in the number of admissions to hospital, which is one of the main aims of the Gold Standards Framework. The paper sets out the key elements of the economic appraisal, and argues for a costbeneficial approach, which is necessary given the anticipated increase in the number of people with dementia who may require care home places in the future.","PeriodicalId":89406,"journal":{"name":"Journal of care services management","volume":"4 1","pages":"321-330"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2010-09-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"https://sci-hub-pdf.com/10.1179/175016810X12773688140464","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"65651533","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Personal budgets were implemented fully across all care groups in Hertfordshire from October 2008. At this time it was agreed to allow a full six months' implementation prior to making any changes followed by a detailed evaluation to ascertain the efficacy of the personal budgets process. The evaluation considered the needs assessment questionnaire, resource allocation system and pricing point, business process and user and carer experience data from the past six months.
