One group which brings these issues into sharp focus is the rising number of people with dementia and their carers. In this particular instance we have the additional focus given by the launch of the Prime Minister's dementia challenge. The challenge seeks to move further and faster in achieving the aims of the national dementia strategy focusing particularly on creating dementia-friendly communities, improving care and health and better research. This article sets out the context for the challenge, the logic behind extending the particular objectives set out in the challenge to better encompass social care and describes the action plan put together by the champion group for improving health and care. The article goes on to suggest that while the objectives of the Prime Minister's chal...","PeriodicalId":89406,"journal":{"name":"Journal of care services management","volume":"6 1","pages":"3-9"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2012-04-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"https://sci-hub-pdf.com/10.1179/1750168712Y.0000000007","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"65653717","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Alongside the long-term expansion of contingent employees in the delivery of social work the article also acknowledges the more recent greater regulation of the agency social work role. Research clearly indicates that there remain both benefits and drawbacks to the use of contingent labour. Professional locum staff can provide a rapid and reliable response to ongoing staff shortages within core areas of social work; however, they can also pose potential risks and their use suggests an evasion of underlying structural problems relating to staff retention and recruitment. With more regulation of contingent staff and less demand for qualified social workers the period of expansion of professional agency employees appears to be at an end. Nevertheless at least sporadic demand is likely to always remain and the article concludes with...","PeriodicalId":89406,"journal":{"name":"Journal of care services management","volume":"5 1","pages":"184-189"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2011-10-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"https://sci-hub-pdf.com/10.1179/175016811X13134916956840","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"65653189","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Due to the direct and indirect symptoms of the disease, people living with MND can suffer from a range of acute medical emergencies throughout the course of their illness. The majority of people are cared for at home and during an acute incident need to access crisis intervention services, i.e., out-of-hours doctors/nurses, or ambulance services. There is limited knowledge and literature on the experiences of patients and carers of using these services.This qualitative study explored the experiences of people with MND and their family carers who had accessed a crisis intervention service during a medical emergency. Semi-structured interviews were conducted with seven people with MND; five family carers, and two bereaved family carers. The majority of participants were satisfied with the service they received. Issues relating to negative experiences included a lack of clear information ab...","PeriodicalId":89406,"journal":{"name":"Journal of care services management","volume":"5 1","pages":"190-199"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2011-10-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"https://sci-hub-pdf.com/10.1179/175016811X13020827976843","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"65652877","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Will this approach make people safer by giving them greater choice and control, or could it put people at greater risk by fragmenting public services and leaving people insufficiently supported? Against this background, this paper offers a personal view based on experience of working with policy makers, managers, practitioners, and service users in health and social care. Overall, the paper argues that the current system does not keep people sufficiently safe and that personalisation – if implemented in a manner true to its underlying principles – could significantly help the situation.","PeriodicalId":89406,"journal":{"name":"Journal of care services management","volume":"5 1","pages":"173-183"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2011-10-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"https://sci-hub-pdf.com/10.1179/1750168712Y.0000000001","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"65653042","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

First, it summarizes the development of, and some characteristics of Dutch large-scale residential/nursing care homes, and dementia care, from the perspective of the changing landscape of policy on housing, home-care services, and financial priorities. Second, it provides a short description (to supplement a PowerPoint photo tour) of the largest care home in the Netherlands, designed by Herman Hertzberger, 35 years ago. It has 520 beds, and pioneered the ‘village within the community’ concept of care. The features of this prizing winning care home setting will be described as they relate to current thinking about good dementia care, and against the backdrop of concerns coming out of the pilot projects introducing ‘small-scale group living dementia care environments’. The view taken in this article is that the traditional large-scale accommodation can offer a safe and valuable home-like environment, as well as other advantages, and that there will always be a need f...","PeriodicalId":89406,"journal":{"name":"Journal of care services management","volume":"5 1","pages":"137-146"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2011-07-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"https://sci-hub-pdf.com/10.1179/175016811X13020827976681","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"65652843","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

This paper reports on one part of a study to evaluate the reliability and validity of two tools: The Design Audit Tool and the Environmental Audit Tool developed to audit how dementia-friendly internal and external environments (specifically care homes) are for people with dementia, and presents a qualitative analysis of the reports presented to care homes following each audit. Thirty care homes took part in the study to evaluate the design audit tools and, following good practice, received a home report detailing up to five design strengths and five limitations following the audit. Analysis of the home reports identifies variation and variability in meeting dementia-friendly principles as specified by both tools. Areas of variability included wayfinding, the use of colour and contrast, access to outside spaces, individualization of personal and communal spaces, lighting and opportunities to engage with the environment. This paper provides valuable insights into variability in care home design and identifies common areas of weakness and strength in care homes of different type, ownership and localities.","PeriodicalId":89406,"journal":{"name":"Journal of care services management","volume":"11 1","pages":"147-155"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2011-07-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"https://sci-hub-pdf.com/10.1179/175016811X13020827976726","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"65652488","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

This article focuses on national and regional dementia strategies that provide guidance and recommendations for improving dementia care. Currently, there appears to be a drive in many European countries to develop dementia strategies at the national level. This is in response to a growing awareness of the needs of people with dementia and to the significant predicted increases in prevalence in coming years. This article focuses on a regional strategy developed in Scotland and examines the processes of strategy development and implementation, reflecting on the influence of the strategy on dementia care and treatment and the ‘success’ of the strategy in Fife. It is clear that local and regional strategies for dementia care will influence outcomes for people with dementia but this may not be as a direct result of ...","PeriodicalId":89406,"journal":{"name":"Journal of care services management","volume":"5 1","pages":"128-136"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2011-07-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"https://sci-hub-pdf.com/10.1179/175016811X13020827976645","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"65652636","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
