It is based on a survey of 199 people undergoing self-assessment either for the first time or as a reassessment between July and November 2010. It has been carried out by members of the Richmond Local Involvement Network Social Care Group. The findings of the research appear to be broadly consistent with evidence from other research. They show that respondents generally expressed high levels of satisfaction with the self-assessment process. Areas where respondents reported lowest levels of satisfaction included finding out about SDS; the waiting time for assessments to take place; the provision of information prior to assessment before completing the questionnaire; the ease of completing the questionnaire; not seeing the completed questio...","PeriodicalId":89406,"journal":{"name":"Journal of care services management","volume":"6 1","pages":"95-106"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2012-09-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"https://sci-hub-pdf.com/10.1179/1750168713Y.0000000017","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"65654451","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

SDS is intended to allow individuals to make real choices, and take control, with appropriate support whatever their level of need. In sum, these changes are intended to deliver long-term benefits to individuals and the system in terms of improved outcomes and more cost-effective use of resources, and to enable everyone, with support if necessary, to design services around their own needs, within a clear financial allocation. For those funding their own support and care it means that there should be clear information points and support and brokerage services that enable them or their supporters to navigate the system, access qualified and appropriate advice and purchase quality services or support which meets their needs. The need for good quality, trusted and reliable advice, and information in an area, which most citizens and even care and housing professionals find too complex to navigate is undeniable. It is not surprising when you consider the social care system is made up of a labyrinth of guidance, rulings, directions, and legislation dating back to 1948. Government departments and policy-makers have committed more than a few words to what future advice and information should look like. However is reinventing the wheel necessary? There already exists excellent examples of advice, information, and support at its best; FirstStop Advice, Find Me Good Care, and My Support Broker are just three which if developed and harnessed together would readily fulfil the need and bring policy think into reality. However, the conditions in which truly caring relationships and a sense of community and homeliness can flourish are the product of social and emotional, ethical and intellectual analysis, and leadership at a much deeper and more complex level. The important but nevertheless secondary issues of policy and procedure, ‘quality’, standards, and regulation have taken precedence over the ‘primary task’ (caring and homeliness) that is the sole legitimate purpose of any care home. As the leader of the home, the registered manager has to be exceptionally clear sighted and determined. She or he must stick to the primary task and resist the pressure to gratify external demands at the expense of attending to the needs of residents. When the home is performing the primary task, the facade will no longer be false, and valid external expectations will be honestly met. The emphasis of recent years upon personalized care put the choice and control by individuals at the heart of care services. Both policies require a major shift way from the model where the state prescribed the way services were delivered, and therefore largely provided the service itself. A new model is required which shapes and makes markets from which choices can be made. Despite these policy drivers, there has been a paucity of thinking about the role of the state in ensuring that markets provides the choice, quality and safety needed by citizens. As we develop the response to the Care and Support Bill there is a real opportunity to develop new approaches to markets as central to the exercise of individual choice.","PeriodicalId":89406,"journal":{"name":"Journal of care services management","volume":"6 1","pages":"74-82"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2012-07-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"https://sci-hub-pdf.com/10.1179/1750168713Y.0000000013","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"65654289","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Following this it should be established what one should expect as a minimum standard of care. The end of life care strategy was initiated by the Department of Health in 2008. This guidance was intended to drive forward end of life care provision where patients were seen as the priority and encouraged to engage in all decision making at each point in their journey. This paper builds on the existing literature by drawing out the workforce implications in the drive towards more joined up care. The analysis begins with background and context to the health and social care workforce and recent policy developments. A leadership commentary goes on to address five themes relating to integrated care and the workforce: focusing on outcomes for people, being clear on structures, encouraging innovation, thinking creatively about the future workforce and getting integration right from the start. These themes seek to stimulate debate and increase the focus of attention on the workforce to achieve high-quality services and good outcomes for people. To these ends the paper will be of interest to policy makers and practitioners alike. The focus of this article is on the English context, but the workforce issues and analysis will hav...","PeriodicalId":89406,"journal":{"name":"Journal of care services management","volume":"6 1","pages":"10-15"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2012-04-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"https://sci-hub-pdf.com/10.1179/1750168712Y.0000000006","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"65653510","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

As public funds shrink, those who can draw on their own assets – and especially the value in their home – will need to do so. But they are likely to be reluctant and anxious about this, and in need of reassuring sound information and guidance. This paper reports on three pilot schemes conducted under the auspices of the Joseph Rowntree Foundation in 2010–2011. These pilots provide some experience of the challenges local authorities may encounter when seeking to help older home-owners to help themselves by drawing on the value in their home. Such challenges arose despite the considerable work of the pilot authorities to bring to the attention of older home-owners, and especially to those reliant on state benefits, a safe way in which they could draw on the value in their home.","PeriodicalId":89406,"journal":{"name":"Journal of care services management","volume":"54 1","pages":"26-34"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2012-04-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"https://sci-hub-pdf.com/10.1179/1750168712Y.0000000003","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"65653251","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
