Quantitative distribution as well as qualitative trends in terpene abundance in Norway spruce, Siberian spruce, blue spruce, and Sitka spruce were identified using cold solvent extraction combined with gas chromatography/mass spectrometry. The spruces species showed a high variability of terpene profiles within studied parts of the trees but always the same qualitative trend corresponding to the assignment to Picea and Casista sections. While in Norway spruce and Siberian spruce (section Picea) α-pinene, camphene, bornyl acetate dominated in the needles, α-pinene, β-pinene, and pimara-7,15-dien-3-one were the most abundant in the resins from tree trunks. In contrast, α-pinene, β-pinene, and methyl abietate dominated in the cones. While limonene, camphene and camphor dominated in the needles of section Casista, high amounts of α-pinene and thunbergol were reached in the resins from tree trunks. In contrast, α-pinene, β-pinene, and Labda-8(20),14-dien-13-ol dominated in the cones. Between P. abies and cultivars ‘Cupressina’ and 'Finedonensis' a significant homogeneity in the qualitative trends of terpene abundance was revealed. The distinguishing terpene was diterpene thunbergol. Significant seasonal variability in the abundance of the monoterpenes tricyclene, β-pinene, and bornyl acetate, and the sesquiterpene germacrene D-4-ol was found. In conclusion, the results confirmed high chemotype and genotype dependence of spruce species in terpene abundance, with the exception of β-phellandrene in the 'Finedonensis', whose abundance was highly unstable.

","PeriodicalId":8799,"journal":{"name":"Biochemical Systematics and Ecology","volume":"123 ","pages":"Article 105095"},"PeriodicalIF":2.0,"publicationDate":"2025-07-29","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"144721939","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":4,"RegionCategory":"生物学","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Pharmacological reports suggested its antimicrobial, anti-inflammatory, and antioxidant activities. Indian western Himalayas, especially Himachal Pradesh, provide a unique environment to grow R. retusa due to distinct ecological conditions, known to influence biosynthesis of metabolites. Thus, this study was focused to find out the chemometric variations using UHPLC-Q-TOF-IMS among differential geographical roots of R. retusa. Comprehensively, R. retusa roots of four distinct locations (Hamirpur, Mandi, Bilaspur and Kangra) revealed the identification of 43 compounds, belonging to polyphenols, flavonoids, stilbenes etc. Further, identified metabolites were found varied at different locations due to the ecological conditions. These variations were clearly observed with chemometric analysis of different samples. The principal component and hierarchical clustering analysis showed abundance of polyphenols, similarities and discrimination, including their metabolites among the locations. This is the first report on the comprehensive metabolite profiling of R. retusa and that will be helpful to differentiate or assess the quality of material based on chemical makeup. Moreover, chromatographic coupled with mass spectrometry identified chemical makeup of R. retusa, that could be the responsible key components of traditional health benefits and reported therapeutic activities.

","PeriodicalId":8799,"journal":{"name":"Biochemical Systematics and Ecology","volume":"123 ","pages":"Article 105092"},"PeriodicalIF":1.4,"publicationDate":"2025-07-23","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"144686857","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":4,"RegionCategory":"生物学","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

This is the biggest EO producing tree species in China and Sichuan of China has a plantation of 36 000 ha. Despite many studies, EO content of very young leaves and its variation of a full year is understudied and the effects of different habitats and insect herbivore on EO yield is poorly understood. A 12-month long, half-month interval monitoring of leaf EO content in an industrial farm revealed an EO content ranging from 2.06 % to 4.25 %. Half-monthly EO content varied from 1.76 % in early March to 2.75 % in early September in fresh leaves, and from 2.55 % in late October to 4.13 % in early April in dry leaves. Leaf EO content was significantly higher in dry than in fresh (3 % versus 2.03 %), two-year old than one-year old (3.06–4.25 % versus 2.06–3.22 %) leaves. EO content differed significantly on different slope aspects (3.87 % on southwest, 3.52 % on southeast, 3.26 % on east, and 2.85 % on northwest), and on different slope gradients (2.99 % on 0–10° slopes, 3.27 % on 10–20° slopes, 3.80 % on 20–30° slopes). Insect herbivore significantly increased EO content and it was 2.91–3.63 % in damaged versus 2.06–3.22 %) in undamaged leaves. Results indicate that plantations on marginal lands with thin, poor and dry soils on steep slopes not only produce higher EO yield but does not compete with cereal crops for croplands. The structure of the new compound was elucidated via analyses of NMR (1 D and 2 D) and HRESIMS data. To the best of our knowledge, all the known compounds were isolated from the genus Cassia for the first time. Cytotoxicity and anti-neuroinflammatory activities assay of the isolated compounds revealed that 1 exhibited significant cytotoxicity superior to the positive control cisplatin against MDA-MB-231 and MCF-7 cell lines. Furthermore, the chemotaxonomic significance of the isolates was also discussed, building upon our previous studies on flavonoids, anthraquinones, terpenoids, and flavan derivatives from C. nodosa, which collectively enrich the phytochemical profile of this species and support its classification within the genus Cassia.

","PeriodicalId":8799,"journal":{"name":"Biochemical Systematics and Ecology","volume":"123 ","pages":"Article 105081"},"PeriodicalIF":1.4,"publicationDate":"2025-07-08","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"144572558","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":4,"RegionCategory":"生物学","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
