Sakamoto","doi":"10.1111/J.1447-0756.1981.TB00523.X","DOIUrl":"https://doi.org/10.1111/J.1447-0756.1981.TB00523.X","url":null,"abstract":"Both serum C-reactive protein (CRP) and alpha 1-acid glycoprotein (AAG) were measured in 22 patients with benign ovarian tumors, 58 patients with ovarian cancer and 31 normal controls, using a single radial immunodiffusion technique. In most normal women as well as patients with benign ovarian tumors, serum CRP was lower than 2 μg/ml and AAG lower than 80 mg/dl. In 15 of 25 untreated patients with ovarian cancer and in 14 of 16 patients with recurrence, both serum CRP and AAG were above 2 μg/ml and 80 mg/dl respectively. Serum CRP and AAG levels were measured sequentially in 9 patients with ovarian cancer after initial treatment. Serum CRP and AAG levels in 5 patients without recurrence had returned to and remained at normal levels after successful treatment. In contrast, 4 patients with recurrence exhibited elevations in serum CRP and AAG levels above the normal range. It is worth notions that these proteins increased before clinical evidence of recurrence. The existence of hPRL receptor in the cells was demonstrated. The stimulatory effect of hPRL was abolished by dopamine and CB-154 (2-bromo-α-ergocriptine), since CB-154, at 60 μg/dish, inhibited cell growth and estrogen production in the absence of hPRL and since dopamine may involve different mechanisms of action. The action of CB-154 was blocked by propranolol, not by phenoxybenzamine or pimozide. Urinary and serum estriol-16α-glucosiduronate increased as pregnancy progressed. Pregnant women with presumptive renal failure (toxemia of pregnancy, malignant hypertension, post renal transplantation, etc) showed low urinary levels of estriol-16α-glucosiduronate but normal serum levels. Their renal clearance of estriol-16α-glucosiduronate was calculated provisionally and compared to that of creatinine. Den","doi":"10.1111/J.1447-0756.1981.TB00516.X","DOIUrl":"https://doi.org/10.1111/J.1447-0756.1981.TB00516.X","url":null,"abstract":"This study involved the biosynthesis and metabolism of a series of 16α-hydroxy-steroids and gluco- and mineralocorticoids in the fetus and their concentrations in materno-fetal plasma and amniotic fluid. \u0000 \u0000 \u0000 \u0000In the biosynthesis of 16α-hydroxy-steroids, 17α-hydroxylase and C17–20-lyase in the adrenals and 16α-hydroxylase in the liver which are distributed in the microsomal fractions, extremely high activities are observed in 16–20 week fetuses. High sulfokinase activity is also found in the 105,000xg supernatant fraction and the activity in decreasing order is adrenal, liver and small intestine. These enzyme activities are affected by some steroids present in the umbilical plasma. In the biosynthesis of gluco- and mineralocorticoids, 17α-, 21-hydroxylase are distributed in the extramitochondrial fraction of the definitive adrenal cortex while 11β-, 18-hydroxylase and 18-dehydrogenase are in the mitochondrial fraction. All of these enzymes show high activities relatively early in gestation and angiotensin-II shows a selective stimulation for 11β-, 18-hydroxylase and potassium together with ACTH for 18-dehydrogenase. \u0000 \u0000 \u0000 \u0000All of the 16α-hydroxy-steroids are consistently higher in the fetal plasma than in maternal plasma and show a 2 to 4 fold increase during the 3rd trimester of gestation. All of corticosteroids assayed are also higher in the fetal plasma and increase during this period. It is well established that a portion of cortisol undergoes sulfate conjugation or conversion to tetrahydro-derivative and that aldosterone is largely converted to 3α' 5β-tetrahydro-aldosterone and a portion undergoes glucosiduronation. \u0000 \u0000 \u0000 \u0000Thus, in the fetus, some trophic hormones and endogenous steroids become active in the control of 16α-hydroxy-steroid and corticosteroid biosynthesis and metabolism. Although acute pancreatitis has been reported as one of the major complications of AFLP, their interrelationships are poorl- understood because of the rarit- and the fulminating nature of this disease. H-perlipidemia has been interpreted as the etiological factor in acute pancreatitis. It is also known that an increase in circulating lipids occurs during pregnanc- ph-siologicall-. AFLP presents itself onl- in the last trimester of pregnanc-.
