Its site of expression has been extensively studied in the central nervous system. We previously reported (Hong et al., 2002, Neurosci. Res., 44:325–335) calretinin expression in the superficial layers of the cat superior colliculus (SC). In the present study, we studied the distribution of calretinin in the intermediate and deep layers by immunocytochemistry. We found striking differences in calretinin immunoreactivity among the superficial, intermediate, and deep layers. In contrast to the superficial layers, the intermediate and deep layers contained many calretinin‐immunoreactive (IR) neurons. They formed two laminar tiers. The first tier, which was very distinctive, was found within the upper intermediate gray layers and formed clusters of labeled neurons in many sections. The second tier of calretinin‐IR neurons was found in the deep gray layer. However, the second tier was not distinctive compared to the first tier and the labeled neurons did not form any clusters. Calretinin‐IR neurons in the intermediate and deep layers varied dramatically in morphology and included vertical fusiform, pyriform, and stellate neurons. Neurons with varicose dendrites were also labeled. Most of the labeled neurons were small to medium in size. Enucleation appeared to have no effect on the distribution of calretinin immunoreactivity in the contralateral intermediate and deep layers of the SC. The results indicate that calretinin is present in various neurons, at different locations. These results should be applicable for better understanding of the functional organization of the SC.","PeriodicalId":85060,"journal":{"name":"Korean journal of biological sciences","volume":"7 1","pages":"151 - 157"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2003-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"https://sci-hub-pdf.com/10.1080/12265071.2003.9647698","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"59655589","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

It was reported that RDPase activity in urine samples of acute and chronic renal failure patients decreases. Nitric oxide (NO) is a highly reactive free radical involved in a number of physiological and pathological processes. NO is able to act in a dual mode, leading either to induction of apoptosis or to blunted execution of programmed cell death. NO inhibited the RDPase release from porcine renal proximal tubules, which could be blocked by L‐NAME. Chitosan, the linear polymer of D‐glucosamine in β(1?4) linkage, not only reversed the decreased RDPase release by NO but also increased NO production in the proximal tubule cells. The stimulatory effect of NO on RDPase release from proximal tubules in the presence of chitosan must be different from the previously proposed mechanism of RDPase release via NO signaling pathway. Chitosan stimulated the RDPase release in the proximal tubules and increased RDPase activity to 220% and 250% at 0.1% and 1%, respectively. RDPase release was decreased to about 40% in the injured proximal tubules and was recovered in proportion to the increase of chitosan. Chitosan may be useful in recovery of renal function from HgCl2 injury.","PeriodicalId":85060,"journal":{"name":"Korean journal of biological sciences","volume":"7 1","pages":"309 - 315"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2003-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"https://sci-hub-pdf.com/10.1080/12265071.2003.9647721","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"59655763","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

There was a significant negative effect of acid stress on hatching performance in the R. marmoratus embryos. The hatching success was only 5% at pH 3.5 compared to over 78% at pH higher than 4.0. The hatching period was also delayed by low pH treatments. The larval and juvenile stages were more sensitive to acid toxicity on mortality than the adult stage, but larvae and juveniles showed similar sensitivity. Mares harassed the foals on 71 occasions between March to September, 1998. The frequency of harassment tended to decrease as foals aged, but the relationship was not significant (P= 0.079). Foals were harassed when sleeping (n = 14), grazing (n = 19), moving (n = 8), approaching a mare in the vicinity (n = 13), or play‐fighting with the foal of the harassing mare (n = 17). Mares harassed foals of younger, more subordinate mares than those of older, more dominant mares (P< 0.001). We conclude that early social experience of foals is associated with the dominance rank of its mother.","PeriodicalId":85060,"journal":{"name":"Korean journal of biological sciences","volume":"7 1","pages":"119 - 122"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2003-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"https://sci-hub-pdf.com/10.1080/12265071.2003.9647692","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"59655396","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

This protein was identified as trigger factor, a ribosome‐associated peptidyl‐prolyl‐cis/trans isomerase with chaperone activity. Trigger factor was overproduced and purified to near homogeneity, and its effect on the function of DnaA protein was examined. Enhanced binding of DnaA protein to DnaA box with no apparent super shift in the gel‐shift experiments suggested that trigger factor, by virtue of its chaperone activity, exerts a change on DnaA protein thus increasing its binding affinity for DnaA box.","PeriodicalId":85060,"journal":{"name":"Korean journal of biological sciences","volume":"7 1","pages":"81 - 87"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2003-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"https://sci-hub-pdf.com/10.1080/12265071.2003.9647687","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"59655148","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The number of antennal segments and head width were used to classify the first four instars. The results, which combine both the field collection and the laboratory rearing, indicate that eleven instars occur in C. kyebangensis. It supports the proposal on the number of instars of Park and Choe (2003c) based on field collections. A total of 388 nymphs from 13 colonies were collected prior to winter to investigate overwintering stages. Of them, 4% (n = 17) were the second instars, 57% (n = 220) were the third instars, and 39% (n = 151) were the fourth instars, respectively. Thus, most of them overwinter in the third or fourth instars. The results indicate that young nymphs of C. kyebangensis have to reach at least 3rd or 4th instar to survive low temperature environment of winter. According to seasonal dynamics of populations, C. kyebangensis reaches adulthood in the summer of the fourth or fifth year (4–5 yr span) after their birth.","PeriodicalId":85060,"journal":{"name":"Korean journal of biological sciences","volume":"7 1","pages":"111 - 117"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2003-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"https://sci-hub-pdf.com/10.1080/12265071.2003.9647691","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"59655345","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Caveolae play an important role in the transcytosis and pinocytosis. Therefore, caveolin‐1 is most likely to work for the membrane dynamic events. In addition, caveolin‐1 interacts with various signaling molecules. Although caveolin‐1 possesses a variety of physiological functions, its structural properties were little construed. Here we analyzed the structural dynamics of the N‐terminal caveolin‐1 (residues 1–101), in order to better understand the structural properties in terms of its versatile functionality. We first analyzed its oligomeric form using GST‐fused N‐terminal domain, revealing that it equilibrates between a dimer and monomers in a concentration‐dependent manner. The N‐terminal domain of caveolin‐1 was previously found to form a heptamer, so that our data suggest the dimeric form as an intermediate structure for the heptamer formation. Then, we obtained the folding profile, which indicated that AGH2o is about 0.5 ±0.03 kcal/mol. The stability of N‐terminal domain is relatively low, indicating that N‐terminal domain may not be crystalline. Conclusively, the dynamic and flexible structure of N‐terminal domain appears more favorable to maintain the versatile functions of caveolin‐1.","PeriodicalId":85060,"journal":{"name":"Korean journal of biological sciences","volume":"7 1","pages":"207 - 211"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2003-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"https://sci-hub-pdf.com/10.1080/12265071.2003.9647706","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"59655731","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Among the MMPs, collagenase‐1 (MMP‐1) participates in remodeling the extracellular matrix of corneal stroma during wound healing. Here the temporal expression patterns of both IL‐1α and collagenase‐1 were examined during regenerative corneal wound healing. IL‐1α was highly expressed in the healing epithelium at 3 d after epithelial abrasion wound, thereafter its expression returned to normal level. Primary cultured quiescent stromal cells (keratocytes) from uninjured normal cornea were round‐shaped and did not expresse collagenase‐1. However, freshly‐cultured stromal cells isolated 3d after epithelial abrasion wound (abrasion wound) underwent marked morphological changes, and a certain percentage of cell populations was transformed into fibroblasts. By immunofluorescence, collagenase‐1 expression was detected only in spindle‐shaped fibroblasts. Interestingly, most freshly‐isolated cells from remodeling corneal repair tissue 10 d after abrasion injury were found to have fibroblastic morphology, and also constitutively expressed a high level of collagenase‐1 in vitro primary culture. However, its expression was not found in the cells isolated 14 d after wound and cells seemed to have returned to normal quiescent stromal cells. Taken together, these results suggest that differentially expressed IL‐1α in the epithelium might play important roles in wound healing, and important signalling pathways are altered as cells take on the fibroblastic morphology.","PeriodicalId":85060,"journal":{"name":"Korean journal of biological sciences","volume":"7 1","pages":"271 - 277"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2003-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"https://sci-hub-pdf.com/10.1080/12265071.2003.9647715","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"59655974","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

In this study, we undertook to characterize these protein types in the central nervous system of the marine snail Aplysia kurodai using a yeast‐based signal sequence trap method. One hundred and three cDNA clones were obtained by screening 300,000 clones from the signal sequence trap cDNA library. Of these, twelve were identical to previously identified Aplysia genes, 19 were related to known proteins in other organisms, and 54 clones were novel. These 54 new genes had high signal peptide scores or were found likely to contain a transmembrane domain sequence. Only 18 of the 103 clones proved to be false positive. The study demonstrates that the signal sequence trap method is an effective tool for Isolating Aplysia genes encoding secreted and membrane proteins.","PeriodicalId":85060,"journal":{"name":"Korean journal of biological sciences","volume":"7 1","pages":"133 - 137"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2003-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"https://sci-hub-pdf.com/10.1080/12265071.2003.9647695","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"59655467","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
