The growth of F. serratus germlings was influenced by genotype of parent plants, which is likely to occur by microclimatic differentiation of substrata. The growth of germlings were greater at lower densities than higher densities indicating that intraspecific competition between germlings occurred within three weeks. Also, the growth of F. serratus germlings was better at 120 μmol m‐2 s‐1 than at 60 μmol m‐2 s‐1. However, mortality of germlings was determined by settlement density rather than irradiance. In population structure, skewness was increased at low irradiance and high density indicating that population structure could be changed by intraspecific competition. Thus, it is concluded that genotypic differentiation of F. serratus germlings occurred in a microgeographic scale, and the experimental density and irradiance level affected the growth of germlings.","PeriodicalId":85060,"journal":{"name":"Korean journal of biological sciences","volume":"7 1","pages":"127 - 132"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2003-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"https://sci-hub-pdf.com/10.1080/12265071.2003.9647694","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"59655456","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

In the present study, we tested the effect of adaptation to endurance exercise on the association of a genetic polymorphism (Pst I RFLP) in the apoAI gene with these biochemical parameters. The genotype and allele frequencies for the Pst I RFLP were not significantly different between the elite athletes and sedentary controls (P>0.05). There were also no significant associations between the Pst I RFLP of the apoAI gene and the biochemical parameters in elite athletic group. Thus, our results suggest that the Pst I RFLP of the apoAI gene was not significantly associated with the serum apoAI and HDL‐cholesterol concentrations as well as athletic performance in Koreans.","PeriodicalId":85060,"journal":{"name":"Korean journal of biological sciences","volume":"71 1","pages":"69 - 73"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2003-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"https://sci-hub-pdf.com/10.1080/12265071.2003.9647685","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"59655554","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

He suggested that Cambaroides should be revised: the C. dauricus contained three species C. dauricus, C. wladiwostokiensis, and C. koshewnikowi; the C. schrenckii with two species C. schrenckii and C. sachalinensis. Also Straovogatov did not take into account the previous data of crayfish distributions. In order to clear up the confusion, the taxonomy of crayfish sampled from Mongolia, Russia, China, and North Korea was reassessed. Starovogatov's key could not lead to the correct identification. Also, detailed observations of apical robe of the male first pleopod did not support the taxonomy on the genus Cambaroides proposed by Starobogatov in 1995. However, some local variations of morphology exist in rostrum, pleuron, and telson of Asian crayfish. Future studies should be concentrated on whether there are geographical dines of morphology or if taxonomic subdivision is necessary.","PeriodicalId":85060,"journal":{"name":"Korean journal of biological sciences","volume":"7 1","pages":"191 - 196"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2003-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"https://sci-hub-pdf.com/10.1080/12265071.2003.9647704","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"59655594","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

In the active avoidance task, zebrafish were trained to escape from one compartment to another to avoid electric shocks (unconditioned stimulus) following a conditioned light signal. Acquisition of active avoidance task appeared to be normal in zebrafish that were treated with 1% alcohol for 30 min for 17 days until the end of the behavioral test, and retention ability of learned behavior, tested 2 days later, was the same as control group. In the T‐maze task, the time to find a reservoir was compared. While the latency was similar during the 1st training session between control and alcohol‐treated zebrafish, it was significantly longer in alcohol‐treated zebrafish during retention test 24 h later. Furthermore, when alcohol was treated 30 min after 2nd session without prior treatment, zebrafish demonstrated similar retention ability compared to control. These results suggest that chronic alcohol treatment alters spatial learning of zebrafish, but not emotional learning.","PeriodicalId":85060,"journal":{"name":"Korean journal of biological sciences","volume":"7 1","pages":"303 - 307"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2003-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"https://sci-hub-pdf.com/10.1080/12265071.2003.9647720","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"59655696","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

We examined the causes of the accident in detail, through analysis of monitoring data from the Han River Monitoring Project, which employed the transplanted aquatic moss, Fontinalis antipyretica. This allowed investigation of another possible cause of the fish kill: release of trace metals into the river from industrial sources during the rainfall event. In addition, we aimed to verify the usefulness of aquatic mosses as bioindicators of the event. Water samples collected 48 h after the fish kill exhibited low pH and high Total‐N and Total‐P, indicating that acidic compounds rich in nitrogen and phosphorus might be a major contaminant. BOD and COD were also very high. On the whole, the conditions of the river water were degraded at that time. Distinct trends were not observed in the chlorophyll phaeophytinization quotient and photosynthesis rate of transplanted mosses. However, mosses sampled soon after the accident exhibited the lowest values for those variables (p < 0.01), suggesting that stress factors in the river were diluted out over time. Heavy metals with characteristics of industrial effluents (Cr, Pb, Zn, Fe, Cu, and Cd) increased (p < 0.01), indicating that they were unlikely to be major causes of the accident.","PeriodicalId":85060,"journal":{"name":"Korean journal of biological sciences","volume":"6 1","pages":"215 - 219"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2002-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"https://sci-hub-pdf.com/10.1080/12265071.2002.9647654","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"59654725","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

This experiment was performed using mechanical pulling stimulation with electric motor equipment to reveal a correlation between silk usage and silk producing system in this poisonous spider. The mature secretory products in glandular epithelium are closely packed and appear as electron‐opaque spherical vesicles. A part of the vesicles with fine fibrillar paracrystalline texture seems to store some proteins which will function at the time of final assembly into fibrils. Most of the secretory silk products which originated from the rough endoplasmic reticula of the glandular epithelial cells are grown by fusion with surrounding small vesicles. However, the Golgi complex does not seem to play an important role in this process of secretion. According to progressive maturation of secretory silk product, these granules are progressively filled with a fine fibrillar material, and thus appear much more electron‐dense than those of earlier states. When the secretory product is extruded from the glandular cavity, the epithelium is rapidly changed to a thinner layer of tall columnar cells with less definitive cell membranes. After extruding there are a few secretory droplets within these cells, thus causing this region to stain much lighter.","PeriodicalId":85060,"journal":{"name":"Korean journal of biological sciences","volume":"6 1","pages":"327 - 333"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2002-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"https://sci-hub-pdf.com/10.1080/12265071.2002.9647672","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"59654812","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Oral administration of PQ (9 mg/kg per day in 0.2 mL of D.W.) on 7 to 14 days of gestation revealed growth retardation with significant reductions in the length of pyloric gland and their pit. As for histochemical properties of GCs in the pyloric region of the stomach, the PQ‐treated rats showed some differences, such as delayed initial appearance of the sulfated GCs and lectin affinities compared with the vehicle group. These different GCs properties in the surface and gastric pit were usually detected in the fetal rats and more prominent and evident differences were revealed in the gland epithelium of the early postnatal rat. These results suggest that maternal PQ administration causes intrauterine growth retardation associated with delayed histogenesis and GCs immaturation of pyloric mucosa in developing rat.","PeriodicalId":85060,"journal":{"name":"Korean journal of biological sciences","volume":"6 1","pages":"247 - 252"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2002-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"https://sci-hub-pdf.com/10.1080/12265071.2002.9647659","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"59654916","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Using Y‐maze olfactory preference tests, we have investigated the olfactory responses of male and female red‐spotted newts, Notophthalmus viridescens, to the crude extracts of the opposite sex's genial and cloacal pheromones. Both male and female cloacal pheromone extracts caused the opposite sex to initiate olfactory responses by leaving the starting area in the Y‐maze, but only subject males exposed to female cloacal pheromone extracts completed olfactory choice by entering the side arm of the Y‐maze which received the pheromones. For genial pheromone extracts, only female genial pheromone extracts induced initial olfactory responses from test males. Neither male nor female genial pheromone extracts made the opposite sex complete olfactory choice. Pre‐exposure of test females to male pheromone extracts increased the likelihood of initial olfactory responses. The latency for initial olfactory responses of test females that were previously exposed to male genial extracts was significantly shorter than that of control females.","PeriodicalId":85060,"journal":{"name":"Korean journal of biological sciences","volume":"6 1","pages":"287 - 292"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2002-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"https://sci-hub-pdf.com/10.1080/12265071.2002.9647665","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"59655050","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
