We aimed to calculate sigma metrics and quality goal index (QGI) for 17 biochemical analytes and compare the use of bias from internal quality control (IQC) and external quality assurance (EQA) data in the calculation of sigma metrics.

Methods: This retrospective study was conducted in Marmara University Pendik E&R Hospital Biochemistry Laboratory. Sigma metrics calculation was performed as (TEa-bias)/CV). CV was calculated from IQC data from June 2018 - February 2019. EQA bias was calculated as the mean of % deviation from the peer group means in the last seven surveys, and IQC bias was calculated as (laboratory control result mean-manufacturer control mean)/ manufacturer control mean) x100. ADD1/SREBP1c regulates fatty acid metabolism and insulin‐dependent gene expression through binding to SRE and E‐box motif with dual DNA binding specificity. Although its transcriptional and post‐translational regulation has been extensively studied, its regulation by interacting proteins is not well understood. To identify cellular proteins that associate with nuclear form of ADD1/SREBP1c, we employed the GST pull‐down system with Hela cell nuclei extract. In this study, we demonstrated that Ku proteins interact specifically with ADD1/SREBP1c protein. GST pull‐down combined with peptide sequencing analysis revealed that Ku80 binds to ADD1/SREBP1c in vitro. Additionally, western blot analysis showed that Ku70, a heterodimerizing partner of Ku80, also associates with ADD1/SREBP1c. Furthermore, co‐transfection of Ku70/Ku80 with ADD1/SREBP1c enhanced the transcriptional activity of ADD1/SREBP1c. Taken together, these results suggest that the Ku proteins might be involved in the lipogenic and/or adipogenic gene expression through interacting with ADD1/SREBP1c.","PeriodicalId":85060,"journal":{"name":"Korean journal of biological sciences","volume":"8 1","pages":"49 - 55"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2004-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"https://sci-hub-pdf.com/10.1080/12265071.2004.9647733","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"59655714","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

In the present study, we demonstrate that the projections from the unimodal (area TAa, IPa, TEa, and TEm) and the multimodal (area TPO and PGa) sensory association areas in the STS mainly terminate in the ventromedial caudate nucleus as well as in the ventral and central shells of the NA. However, there are only few projections to the dorsal core of the NA and the ventrolateral putamen from the sensory association cortex in the STS. Based on these differential neural connections between the subterritories of the ventral striatum and the sensory association areas, the ventromedial caudate nucleus and the shells of NA appear to be major integration sites for sensory input from the STS and functionally different from the dorsal core of NA and the ventrolateral putamen.","PeriodicalId":85060,"journal":{"name":"Korean journal of biological sciences","volume":"8 1","pages":"319 - 328"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2004-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"https://sci-hub-pdf.com/10.1080/12265071.2004.9647767","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"59656640","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Expression pattern of Rbm indicates that Rbm is critical for early phase of male germ cell development. It shares strong structural homology with hnRNP G, suggesting a function as an RNA processing factor. In order to gain a clue on the molecular mechanisms of Rbm on male germ cell development, we examined interactions of Rbm with selected proteins in yeast. The results revealed specific interactions between Rbm, hnRNP K and Tra2α. These results suggest that hnRNP K and Tra2α may be functional partners of Rbm in male germ cells. The antennule remains a four‐segmented appendage until copepodid V. The antenna of copepodid I carries a vestigial exopod. Sexual dimorphism first appears at copepodid IV whose males bear primodial maxillipeds. Leg 5 also is sexually dimorphic from copepodid IV onwards, with its free segment bearing three setae in the female and two setae in the male. Morphological features of some appendages appearing during copepodid development are discussed. Of the 190 nests examined in this study, cuckoo parasitism occurred at 10 nests (8 blue and 2 white egg clutches, respectively), and only blue cuckoo eggs were found. This frequency was similar to the egg‐color ratio of all host nests found (151 blue and 39 white egg clutches). Vinous‐throated parrotbills showed high rejection rate towards both cuckoo eggs and model ones. There was a significant difference in rejection rates towards mimetic (blue) and non‐mimetic (white) eggs in blue egg clutches. Mimetic eggs put in nests took significantly longer to be rejected than non‐mimetic ones. The most common rejection method used by the hosts was egg ejection (puncture‐ejection). The costs of ejecting non‐mimetic eggs tended to be lower than those of ejecting mimetic eggs. These results indicate that egg‐color dimorphism in this species favors the individuals having white egg clutches in terms of higher rejection rate and lower ejection costs of the parasitic eggs. This study also suggests that egg‐color dimorphism of the vinous‐throated parrotbill decreases the effect of cuckoo parasitism on host populations.","PeriodicalId":85060,"journal":{"name":"Korean journal of biological sciences","volume":"8 1","pages":"77 - 80"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2004-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"https://sci-hub-pdf.com/10.1080/12265071.2004.9647737","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"59656331","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Sulfate concentrations of soils in the ca. 60‐year‐old and 26‐year‐old reclaimed rice fields were much lower than that in a natural tidal flat. During 60 d of anaerobic incubation, total methane production and sulfate consumption of the soil slurries were 7.0 μmol CH4/g and 8.2 μnol SO4 2‐/g in the 60‐year‐old rice field, 5.6 μmol CH4/g and 12.7 μmol SO4 2‐/g in the 26‐year‐old rice field, and ca. 0 μmol CH4/g and 22.4 μmol SO4 2‐/g in a natural tidal flat. Relative percent electron flow through sulfate reduction in the 60‐year‐old rice field was much lower (50.8%) compared with the 26‐year‐old rice field (69.3%) and the tidal flat (99.9%). The addition of an inhibitor of methanogenesis (2‐bromoethanesulfonate) had no effect on sulfate reduction in the soil slurries of the reclaimed rice fields. However, instant stimulation of methane production was achieved with addition of an inhibitor of sulfate reduction (molybdate) in the soil slurries from the 26‐year‐old reclaimed rice field. The specific inhibitor experiments suggest that the relationship of methanogenesis and sulfate reduction might become mutually exclusive or syntrophic depending on sulfate content in the soil after reclamation. Sulfate, thus sulfate reduction activity of sulfate‐reducing bacteria, would be an important environmental factor that inhibits methane production and determines the major pathway of electron and carbon flow in anaerobic carbon mineralization of reclaimed rice field soils.","PeriodicalId":85060,"journal":{"name":"Korean journal of biological sciences","volume":"8 1","pages":"281 - 288"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2004-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"https://sci-hub-pdf.com/10.1080/12265071.2004.9647761","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"59656446","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The specimens were sampled in the coastal waters of Yongdam, northwest of Jeju Island, Korea, from November 2001 to January 2003. H. hilgendorfi ritteri is a synchronous hermaphrodite; the gonads are located in the mantle. The reproductive cycle can be grouped into the following successive stages in the ovary: growth (February to June), vitellogenesis (April to September), mature (July to December), spent (November to February), and recovery (December to April). Likewise, in the testis, the stages observed were: growth (October), mature (October to December), spent (November to February), and resting (January to September). Major spawning probably occurs between November and January, when water temperatures decrease. The histological observations of the gonads suggested that this species is a multiple spawner during the spawning period. Spawning occurred between the new moon and full moon, and again between the full moon and new moon, suggesting that the spawning rhythm is influenced by the lunar cycle.","PeriodicalId":85060,"journal":{"name":"Korean journal of biological sciences","volume":"8 1","pages":"33 - 40"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2004-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"https://sci-hub-pdf.com/10.1080/12265071.2004.9647731","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"59655647","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
