STs and SCs are the only underrepresented groups in higher education. The expansion of higher education during 2007 and 2014 benefited OBCs most. STs and SCs are lowest beneficiaries. Privatization also benefited OBCs most. Publicly financed institutions serve STs and SCs most which shows inclusive character of such institutions. Disparities by social group exist even at a higher level of income which indicates that income alone does not determine access to private unaided institutions. The empirical evidences suggest that affirmative actions are inevitable make private unaided institutions inclusive.","PeriodicalId":84206,"journal":{"name":"Artha vijnana : journal of the Gokhale Institute of Politics and Economics, Poona (India) = Artha vijnana : Gokhale Artha Sastra Samstha Dvara Prakasita Traimesika Patrika","volume":"68 1","pages":"34-54"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2017-03-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"79554880","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Indoor air pollution from them is a significant source of public health hazard, particularly to the poor and vulnerable women and children. Though many studies exist on kitchen fuel and child morbidity, there exists limited literature on open chullah facilitates with chimney and without chimney as well as its effect on child morbidity and nutrition. This study analyzes the different types of solid fuels with respect to the place of residence and explores the impact of solid fuel use with or without chimney on child health. Findings suggest that the chances of using solid fuel varied widely across the place of residence and also show a high correlation between solid fuel use and higher incidence of respiratory illness. Mode of solid fuel use has tremendous impact on health indices. As the transition from solid fuel to clean fuel use takes longer time, it is essential to promote use of solid fuel with chimney as a short term goal to improve child health.","PeriodicalId":84206,"journal":{"name":"Artha vijnana : journal of the Gokhale Institute of Politics and Economics, Poona (India) = Artha vijnana : Gokhale Artha Sastra Samstha Dvara Prakasita Traimesika Patrika","volume":"144 1","pages":"365-379"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2016-12-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"77556722","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

In general, healthy people live longer, are more productive, and contribute more to their households and society. India is undergoing a rapid and unprecedented health transition in recent decades. We are faced with the huge burden of infectious diseases, unsafe pregnancies, and malnourishment on one side and the growing incidences of non-communicable and costly-to-treat diseases on the other. Considerable disparities still persists between social groups and across the regions/states in India wherein the most disadvantaged sections reporting the worst health conditions. Added to this, another challenge is the widening gender disparities in health status and utilization of health services. Despite the considerable improvement over the decades in the provision of primary healthcare services to the rural and remotest areas of this vast nation, inequalities by socio-economic classes continue as an unfinished agenda. This may be attributed to a range of social, economic and political factors which determines the distribution and accessibility of healthcare. Efficient allocation of health resources across regions and communities is required to ensure the availability of basic healthcare services to all and needy.","PeriodicalId":84206,"journal":{"name":"Artha vijnana : journal of the Gokhale Institute of Politics and Economics, Poona (India) = Artha vijnana : Gokhale Artha Sastra Samstha Dvara Prakasita Traimesika Patrika","volume":"17 1","pages":"281-286"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2016-12-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"75013736","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Composite measures using macro level data are no doubt important as they provide a broader picture but they can only give little insights on individual well-being. The current study is an attempt to bridge this gap by conducting an assessment of the well-being of India's elderly by applying Amartya Sen's Capability Approach. Since the indicators used as a proxy for the respective functioning achievements in each domain are of a mixed nature, an Optimal Scaling method is performed in order to identify the principal components of overall well-being which allows variables to be scaled at different levels as a result of non-linear relationships between them can be modelled. For comparison across the well-being domains, the fuzzy set approach has been employed that handles continuous and ordinal variables simultaneously, and is generally used in the capability approach for micro-level analysis. By disaggregating the overall well-being score by age and sex, the grim scenario of gender disparity in later life is evident across major domains, thus throwing light on the cultural paradox which still persists in India.","PeriodicalId":84206,"journal":{"name":"Artha vijnana : journal of the Gokhale Institute of Politics and Economics, Poona (India) = Artha vijnana : Gokhale Artha Sastra Samstha Dvara Prakasita Traimesika Patrika","volume":"6 1","pages":"313-327"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2016-12-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"74249419","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
