A community based cross-sectional study was carried out in Madhepura District in November 2014. Suspected cases were tested with rK39 kit for VL. The incidence rate, case fatality rate and seasonality analysis was carried out. The new cases of VL were added to calculate the incidence. In the year 1997, Bihar recorded 2 VL cases per 10,000 population, which declined to 1 case in the year 2013. In 2016, there were 0.6 case per 10,000 population. Case fatality rate in Bihar was 1.6 in 1997 which reduced to 0.16 in 2013. Though the disease occurred across the year, the peak of VL was observed during the month of March, April and May. In Madhepura District, the incidence rate in last two years was calculated as 45 cases per 10,000 population which was higher than the official record. The study suggests strengthening the surveillance system and active case detection to cover all the cases of the disease.","PeriodicalId":84206,"journal":{"name":"Artha vijnana : journal of the Gokhale Institute of Politics and Economics, Poona (India) = Artha vijnana : Gokhale Artha Sastra Samstha Dvara Prakasita Traimesika Patrika","volume":"17 1","pages":"339-348"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2016-12-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"80167727","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

It is measured with Lawton and Brody's Instrumental Activities of Daily Living (IADL) Scale by assigning scores to elderly persons' ability to do or not eight day-to-day activities by adopting correlation and multiple linear regression techniques. In both the states the magnitude of functional disability status of the elderly has shown an increasing trend with an increase in their current age, whereas such pattern has decreased with an increase in their years of schooling. Further, while the likelihood of functional disability among the elderly noted to be much lower among those who are working for wages and self-reported health status as fair / good, such likelihood is observed to be higher among those who are co-residing with children / others than their respective counterparts (p<0.001 for all cases). Place of residence, gender, marital status, wealth index of households, number of chronic morbidities and physical disability index have also exhibited their independent net effects on the functional disability of the elderly, but differentially across the states.","PeriodicalId":84206,"journal":{"name":"Artha vijnana : journal of the Gokhale Institute of Politics and Economics, Poona (India) = Artha vijnana : Gokhale Artha Sastra Samstha Dvara Prakasita Traimesika Patrika","volume":"75 1","pages":"328-338"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2016-12-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"84558084","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Kerala and Tamil Nadu are among the better-developed states while Bihar and Uttar Pradesh are less developed. While mortality levels among children have declined significantly in all the states, a corresponding decline in malnutrition levels was not apparent. India's ICDS programme is the world's largest programme of its kind. One of its major objectives is to meet the nutritional needs of children from six months to six years through supplemental feeding in the Anganwadi Centres. This paper analyzes components of the ICDS programme including budgetary provisions to determine the extent to which the programme has been successful in reducing malnutrition. The study first analyzed state-level and then district level data in Tamil Nadu. Household-level data from NFHS-3 showed that while there is good nutritional impact on the beneficiary children, a corresponding impact on the population is not seen. This means large numbers of malnourished children are added to this group every year which neutralizes the positive effects of supplemental feeding.","PeriodicalId":84206,"journal":{"name":"Artha vijnana : journal of the Gokhale Institute of Politics and Economics, Poona (India) = Artha vijnana : Gokhale Artha Sastra Samstha Dvara Prakasita Traimesika Patrika","volume":"132 1","pages":"287-312"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2016-12-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"85732195","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

But with globalization, industrialization and urbanization the concept of healthy ecosystem has been demolished. Poisonous and toxic agents are mixing in the air and chemical reaction happening in the atmosphere. Twelve Indian states are studied in this paper. It explores the trends and pattern of air pollutants. Multi-linear analysis has been done to explore the association among different gases and the respiratory problems. In Jharkhand and Madhya Pradesh the number of factories has not significantly increased and also N02 and So2 are emitted less than other states. Industrially developed states have faced respiratory health problems with increasing gas emission.","PeriodicalId":84206,"journal":{"name":"Artha vijnana : journal of the Gokhale Institute of Politics and Economics, Poona (India) = Artha vijnana : Gokhale Artha Sastra Samstha Dvara Prakasita Traimesika Patrika","volume":"120 1","pages":"380-396"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2016-12-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"76761312","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The growing cohort of elderly especially the 'oldest-old', has implications for the health and social systems, as they have greater demand for long term care. Given the changing social-cultural context withering intergenerational bonding and filial piety, the State will have to play a greater role in caring for them. This paper examines the role of age, morbidity, limitations in ADL and IADL, disability and dementia among elderly viz-a-vis long-term care availability and unmet needs in terms of both health and social-care by presenting a situational analysis of health and care needs of elderly people. It presents the factors leading to changing demand, access to and supply of care that need to be considered while designing care models for them. Strengthening primary health care and innovative community based models can be a possible solution to address their needs.","PeriodicalId":84206,"journal":{"name":"Artha vijnana : journal of the Gokhale Institute of Politics and Economics, Poona (India) = Artha vijnana : Gokhale Artha Sastra Samstha Dvara Prakasita Traimesika Patrika","volume":"15 1","pages":"397-406"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2016-12-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"76688902","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

This paper attempts to estimate the extent of variation in health infrastructure and its impact on health outcomes in Bihar and Tamil Nadu. The question is whether the public health system is significant in explaining health status of people. The study measures the response of health outcomes to improvement in health infrastructure. Data is largely drawn from Census of India, 2011 and Annual Health Survey, 2010-2011. Infant mortality and under-five mortality were taken as the outcome variable. Using different components of health infrastructure indicators, a health infrastructure index was constructed. The findings reveal that poor health infrastructure is a significant constraint in achieving better health outcomes. Like demand side factors, supply side factors play an important role in health care system. Besides, education of women improves health outcome indicators.","PeriodicalId":84206,"journal":{"name":"Artha vijnana : journal of the Gokhale Institute of Politics and Economics, Poona (India) = Artha vijnana : Gokhale Artha Sastra Samstha Dvara Prakasita Traimesika Patrika","volume":"8 1","pages":"349-364"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2016-12-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"89703204","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

This calls for policy intervention. However, prior to formulating policy, it is necessary to audit this sector which requires data on a large number of variables. While agricultural statistics has matured over the years, data gaps do exist which are a constraint to useful statistical analysis. This paper attempts to reveal certain gaps in continuous data on an annual basis for important variables such as cost of production, agricultural wages, retail prices, etc. Availability of this data will facilitate more meaningful and precise analysis of the agricultural sector.","PeriodicalId":84206,"journal":{"name":"Artha vijnana : journal of the Gokhale Institute of Politics and Economics, Poona (India) = Artha vijnana : Gokhale Artha Sastra Samstha Dvara Prakasita Traimesika Patrika","volume":"50 1","pages":"228-233"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2016-09-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"85997818","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

It is best exemplified in changes in the shares of GDP contributed by agriculture, industry and service sectors. From a primary agro-based economy during the early years of planning, the Indian economy has emerged as predominant in the services sector during the last couple of decades. This note has tried to shed lights on this 'service-led' growth from the angle of official data base and its estimation procedures. It has been argued that appropriate data and proper estimation procedures can explain and even alter the conclusions drawn previously, particularly in the case of phenomenal growth of services sector in the few decades.","PeriodicalId":84206,"journal":{"name":"Artha vijnana : journal of the Gokhale Institute of Politics and Economics, Poona (India) = Artha vijnana : Gokhale Artha Sastra Samstha Dvara Prakasita Traimesika Patrika","volume":"28 1","pages":"234-238"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2016-09-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"73669519","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

It concentrates on data limitations and gaps relating to input output modelling and employment of human resources in Indian economy. Major gaps in data base of input output modelling relate to (i) total want of such data as are required for the compilation of capital coefficients matrix of Indian economy; (ii) Want of data relating to inter and intra-state trade along with price differentials among the economies of the states; (iii) Lack of I-O matrix with uniform classification without which inter-temporal comparative study is not possible. Change in technology is also difficult to infer without such tables; (iv) Both inter-state and intra-state growth differentials warrant that each input output table has an inter-regional transaction matrix as its supplement; (v) No data are available relating to transactions that take place between rural and urban establishments and people within a district and among the districts of a state; (vi) Sector-wise data relating to employment with education-occupation profile and corresponding wage/salary rates are not available. Data relating to nonformal and unorganized sector are also not available. This makes it extremely difficult to examine changing factor endowment of Indian economy during the course of development. It needs sector-wise data of employment and sectorwise wage rates are also needed.","PeriodicalId":84206,"journal":{"name":"Artha vijnana : journal of the Gokhale Institute of Politics and Economics, Poona (India) = Artha vijnana : Gokhale Artha Sastra Samstha Dvara Prakasita Traimesika Patrika","volume":"38 1","pages":"219-227"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2016-09-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"79851317","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
