Unfortunately, African memory is one painfully scared as a result of deep divisions, gross injustice and severe conflicts. Added to the list today is the global Covid – 19 havoc which has not only complicated but also compounded the already existing problems in the continent. As world leaders are working to contain the pandemic and its havoc on human society, ascertaining the role of the Church in the entire scheme becomes pertinent. Amidst the pandemic, how is the Church responding to her universal mission and mandate? How is the Church witnessing and living out this mission in the pandemic? It is on this basis that the paper investigates the role of the Church in Africa as a source of communion, hope and strength in this period of crisis.","PeriodicalId":84083,"journal":{"name":"African journal for the psychological study of social issues : journal of the African Society for the Psychological Study of Social Issues","volume":"81 1","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-03-29","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"73601584","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The results demonstrate that a 10% increase in monthly household income decreases the share of the monthly household food budget by -0.0117 of a percentage point on average, and ceteris paribus, and the evidence shows that the underlying household July month Engel food curve is characterized by an inverse link between household monthly food budget share and the household monthly total income. The findings statistically established that food is a necessary commodity and the food demand elasticity assessment showed that a 10% increase in household spending would increase household monthly food needs by an average of 9.8%, and ceteris paribus.","PeriodicalId":84083,"journal":{"name":"African journal for the psychological study of social issues : journal of the African Society for the Psychological Study of Social Issues","volume":"11 1","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-03-29","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"89908947","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

This apparently spells doom for the future generation if not checked as a matter of urgency. In the case of Africa and Nigeria in particular, evidences abound to buttress the interconnectedness among unemployment, economic inequality and political participation. This scenario has overwhelming implications for sustainable political development of Nigeria. This paper undertakes to unearth the interactions between unemployment and political participation in Nigeria adopting the Marxist theory of post-colonial state which underlies the political economy approach. Data are drawn from secondary sources which, to a large extent, brings to the fore that the unemployed become victims of economic inequality, and given the high stakes in Nigeria politics, are prone to political apathy, frustration and hopelessness. The paper vehemently proposes that government should exercise the political will to engage constructively in dismantling all seemingly governance and institutional hindrances to popular participation. It is therefore, recommended that money politics be discouraged using appropriate legal measures. Various empowerment and job creation programmes should be objectively implemented to ameliorate the high incidences of economic inequality as a result of unemployment thereby encouraging greater political participation in Nigeria. Small consulting company owners are concerned about failing within the first five years because they lack innovative strategies. Grounded in the resource-based view theory, this qualitative multiple case study aimed to explore strategies African American consulting company owners use for longevity beyond 5 years. The participants comprised African American owners of three consulting businesses located in the northeast region of the United States who successfully sustained their business beyond 5 years. Data collection included semi-structured interviews with consulting company owners and reviewing company documents. A key recommendation includes conducting feasibility screening and designing and using a strategy canvas to identify opportunities.","PeriodicalId":84083,"journal":{"name":"African journal for the psychological study of social issues : journal of the African Society for the Psychological Study of Social Issues","volume":"32 1","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-03-29","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"76709456","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Surprise has consistently been a substantive characteristic of warfare. Surprise is an event that is initiated with the aim of taking the enemy unaware. The surprise initiator desires to attain victory against the enemy with minimal attrition to their equipment and forces. Some surprise offensives however, remarkably succeed at the initial point, only to become catastrophic in the end for the surprise attacker. The objective of the study was to probe the possible causes for an ultimate defeat of the surprise attackers by the victim of the surprise through an in-depth historical analysis of case studies of surprise wars. The study adopted the qualitative research approach and a descriptive discourse pattern, and data collection was mainly secondary. An in-depth analysis brings to light that surprise offensives mostly fail in a catastrophic way because the strategy of the adversary that took the initiative is miscalculated. Thus, surprise mobilizes the victim and their response is usually vicious and brutal resulting in the defeat of the surprise initiator. The study recommended that for a surprise to be successful and achieve an ultimate victory in a war it needs to be incorporated into a creative comprehensive war strategy.","PeriodicalId":84083,"journal":{"name":"African journal for the psychological study of social issues : journal of the African Society for the Psychological Study of Social Issues","volume":"1 1","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-03-29","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"91334164","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

One of the objectives was establishing the extent to which oil mining in Turkana County has contributed to changes in gender equality. Sample size of three hundred (300) respondents was selected through systematic random sampling. Finding indicated that there is no relationship between involvement in oil mining activities and equal opportunity for men and women to work in mining activities. The paper recommended that issues like compensation, decision making, royalty sharing, power relations should be well spelt out in policies like the Mining Bill (2014) to ensure gender mainstreaming and no ambiguity in interpretation and Quality Assurance and gender audits should be adopted by companies ensuring a robust Monitoring and Evaluation.","PeriodicalId":84083,"journal":{"name":"African journal for the psychological study of social issues : journal of the African Society for the Psychological Study of Social Issues","volume":"1 1","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-03-29","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"88698434","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The proposition of the study stated that poverty issues were endemically a political challenge and that poverty reduction strategies were merely a technical response that cannot reduce poverty. The qualitative research approach based on conceptual and normative analyses of data was adopted whilst the theoretical framework used was dependency theory. The study found that despite the several poverty reduction programmes embarked on, some multi-sectoral while others were sector specific, the poverty incidence in Nigeria was steadily on the increase thus validating the proposition that poverty reduction strategies of the World Bank and IMF are merely technical responses to a fundamentally political challenge. The study recommended that the World Bank, IMF, donor and aid agencies as well as the poor countries should understand the impact of politics on poverty as such emphasize political reforms alongside poverty reduction strategies in order to deal with poverty reduction in the Third World.","PeriodicalId":84083,"journal":{"name":"African journal for the psychological study of social issues : journal of the African Society for the Psychological Study of Social Issues","volume":"17 1","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-03-29","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"82576226","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

This study is a comparative study of work-family balance between male and female academic staff of selected universities in Osun state. It was aimed at understanding the significant relationship between work-related experiences and work-family balance among male and female academic staff. A systematically random sampling technique was used to select the respondents. Statistical methods such as percentages, means, standard deviations and regression analysis were used for the study. The findings indicated that the differences in coping strategies and the ability to maintain a healthy work-family balance between male and female academic staff at both universities were not statistically significant. In other words, male academics employed a smaller number of techniques than their female counterparts. It was recommended that universities implement institutional policies in order to demonstrate their commitment to creating a family- and worker-friendly environment.","PeriodicalId":84083,"journal":{"name":"African journal for the psychological study of social issues : journal of the African Society for the Psychological Study of Social Issues","volume":"45 1","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-03-29","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"88345385","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Nkwede","doi":"10.4314/ajosi.v4i1.7","DOIUrl":"https://doi.org/10.4314/ajosi.v4i1.7","url":null,"abstract":"This study examined the demand for money in Nigeria from 1980 to 2019, employing various techniques of econometric analysis. The study was motivated to determine whether Keynes liquidity preference theory holds in Nigeria and to ascertain whether money demand function is stable in Nigeria. The Augmented Dickey Fuller (ADF) unit root test showed that the variables were stationary at different levels. The test of stability showed that the estimated parameters for the study are stable within the period under study. Thus, money demand function is stable in Nigeria. Considering a year period lag in the estimated money demand function, it was found that there was a positive relationship between money demand and real income during the period of study. It implies that increase in real income (gross domestic product) leads to increase in the demand for money, as predicted by economic theory. The real income (gross domestic product) coefficient is 0.09 which is less than unit and is consistent with the transactions and precautionary theories. However, the inflation rate both at a year and two years period lags had negative signs, and were consistent with a priori expectations. The coefficient of –0.002 and -0.001 respectively showed that the demand for money in Nigeria will decrease by about 0.2% or 0.1% when the inflation rate (at a year or two year lag) rises by 1%. The result indicated that the higher the rate of expected inflation (i.e. higher returns on the alternative assets), ceteris paribus, and the lower is the demand for money in Nigeria. Hence, people would tend to switch to other money alternatives when inflation is anticipated, because they promise higher rates of returns. In the light of the findings, it was recommended that Central Bank of Nigeria should pursue policy aimed at changing the level of income which will influence the demand for money in the same direction.","PeriodicalId":84083,"journal":{"name":"African journal for the psychological study of social issues : journal of the African Society for the Psychological Study of Social Issues","volume":"68 1","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2022-04-20","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"91356230","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
