In Africa, the care of older persons is falling on fewer children and those with least resources feel the impact. Hence childlessness in old age has been linked to isolation, ill health and poverty. This study set out to examine the importance of children in old age security provisions in Nigeria. Data was collected through individual-based questionnaire, this was used to elicit response to the above general objective and multi-stage sampling procedure was employed to select local government areas, enumeration areas and individuals for the study. In all, 810 respondents were interviewed. The respondents were elderly men and women aged 60 years and above. The study had mire female and rural respondents than male and urban respondents. Logistic regression model was used to determine the net effects of the explanatory factors on the welfare of the elderly. The data reveals that old age security depends on the level of supports from children (60%). Also, in terms of religion, while Muslims are 1.8 times more likely to, those who are adherents of African traditional religion are 3.5 times more likely to see children as an important source of old age security than those who are Christians. In the female model, those with primary education are 4.3 times more likely to see children as an important source of old age security provisions than those with secondary education. The study found that while education, religion, and family size are significantly related to the perception of children as an important source of old age security in the male model, in the female model, only religion established similar relationship. The study concludes that the welfare of the elderly requires the strengthening of social security system. Researchers are expected to be sensitive to the many sources of exploitable vulnerability in those whose participation they invite. The failure to give attention to peculiar socio-cultural factors influencing the process of informed consent in Nigeria might have contributed to the failure of many investigators to apply and conform to related local and international research regulations. Genuine respect for human dignity requires deeper understanding of patients' values, culture, family and community. Nigeria is socio-culturally diverse in terms of language, religion, economy, and traditions. Investigators require adequate familiarity with the local socio-cultural characteristics in order to meaningfully communicate the research purpose and method upon which free and informed consent is based. The centrality of informed consent in socio-behavioural and health related researches can not be over emphasized. Negotiating informed consent with the designated authorities in human research with non-Western populations requires investigators to move beyond narrow definitions of personhood, autonomy, and “self” determination. Without these, researchers' efforts would be mere exploitation and abuse of fellow human beings. This paper argues that when professionals are conversant with forms of child abuse in their environment and understand the emotional, psychological, physical and developmental problems that children endure because of abusive episodes, dedicated effort would be made to curb cases of child abuse. The basic features of approaches for preventing child abuse that cut across the family, school and community of the subject of such interventions are outlined. Finally, the paper suggests the need for effective collaboration of these preventive strategies in policy making and their adaptation by social workers to suit the needs of troubled Nigerian families. They were purposively selected from some secondary schools for deaf students, Federal College of Education (Special) Oyo and University of Ibadan, all in Oyo state. One research question and three hypotheses were raised for testing. Section D of the Occupational Stress Questionnaire (OSQ) was administered to the study participants. The section contains 16 items designed to ascertain effects of specific poor working conditions on workers. Findings showed that poor working conditions such as delay in promotion and salary payment and unattractive office accommodation have significant adverse influence on working performance of both teachers and interpreters. Teachers significantly felt the disturbing influence of poor working conditions on their job performance than the sign language interpreters. However, gender and marital status have no significant relationship with the participants' sensitivity to the negative influence of poor working conditions on their work performance. In particular, the paper shows that industrial development in the country involved considerable craft works firms in the early stages and grew progressively in number over the years to large-scale manufacturing. The contribution of manufacturing to industrial development of Nigeria in terms of Gross Domestic Product (GDP), capacity utilization, and percentage sourcing of local raw materials dwindled over the years. The pattern of the distribution of manufacturing industries at the city level indicates that there is a marked concentration of manufacturing establishments in the southern part of the country, and especially Lagos, Ibadan and Benin in the southwest. Other locations of relative high concentration of industrial establishments are Kano in the North; and Enugu and Port Harcourt in the southeast. Although, this paper shows that production subcontracting increased and varied amongst subcontracting firms, production subcontracting relationships are concentrated in a few locations. The paper concludes that the spatial pattern of manufacturing could change if industrialists' adopts the strategy of industrial linkages, and especially production subcontracting which has become a driving force in contemporary industrial development efforts in the world today. It is expected that the situation could be better enhanced given the ongoing privatization of industrial concerns in Nigeria.
