Unfortunately, this data series has a number of restrictions. It only accounts for the number of ships arriving at the Cape during the period 1700–1793. It also does not distinguish between the types of ships used or compensate for the length of their stay. Using a new electronic data source detailing every ship that anchored in Table Bay during the existence of the Dutch East India Company, this paper provides new insights into the pattern of ship traffic fluctuations in the early Cape Colony. Historical evidence from this period supports the empirical results. While many gaps still remain, the new empirical evidence can be used in future research on this neglected period of South Africa’s economic history.","PeriodicalId":83269,"journal":{"name":"The South African journal of economic history : [journal of the Economic History Society of Southern Africa]","volume":"23 1","pages":"1 - 27"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2008-09-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"80200239","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

At the heart of this declaration was the need to improve the living standards of almost a billion people in the developing world - one in five of the world's population - who were living in extreme poverty in 2000. World Bank projections now suggest that this income poverty target is likely to be achieved in developing countries as a whole if the relatively high average per capita income growth rate of six per cent a year realised during the recent past is sustained.","PeriodicalId":83269,"journal":{"name":"The South African journal of economic history : [journal of the Economic History Society of Southern Africa]","volume":"11 1","pages":"122 - 154"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2008-09-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"73955650","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Originally, economic history emerged from the confrontations between classical political economy of the Ricardian kind and the Historical School. Before Ricardo, say in Adam Smith's Wealth of Nations, economic history coexisted with pure theory without being aware of its own distinctness. The parting of ways was initiated with the synthesis from history of classical political economy which paved the way for the ultimate emergence of an intermediary field of inquiry. Traditions of economic history differed from one country to another, \"but in all the traditional pull of 'institutional' history was strong\".","PeriodicalId":83269,"journal":{"name":"The South African journal of economic history : [journal of the Economic History Society of Southern Africa]","volume":"27 1","pages":"142 - 166"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2007-09-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"74326488","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

It reviews the genesis of the programme and industry performance under the dispensation. Achievements and shortcomings made in the first five years of the MIDP are highlighted. The article argues that to sustain industry gains made in the first five years of the MIDP and to avoid tension among stakeholders arising from the uneven industry performance, a new consensus that specifies weights to be attached to each of the programme objectives has to be developed. This did not happen in 2000 and so the tension within industry interest groups continues.","PeriodicalId":83269,"journal":{"name":"The South African journal of economic history : [journal of the Economic History Society of Southern Africa]","volume":"323 1","pages":"51 - 73"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2007-09-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"86770988","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

In that time I watched some South African TV in English, and when English subtitles were provided I could follow the Afrikaans soap operas, too, noting the interesting contrasts with Dutch. I spoke at some length about the country with a couple of dozen South Africans. I read hurriedly most of Robert Ross's Concise history of South Africa and some of Leonard Thompson's A history of South Africa, as well as certain relevant parts of the Lonely Planet's travel guide to South Africa. On Professor Verhoef's recommendation I bought and read Robert Guest's The shackled continent. And I have at last bought Nelson Mandela's autobiography and some poetry in Afrikaans.","PeriodicalId":83269,"journal":{"name":"The South African journal of economic history : [journal of the Economic History Society of Southern Africa]","volume":"8 1","pages":"171 - 184"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2006-09-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"81799008","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

In particular, outflows on the capital account in the late 1950s resulted in tighter and more pervasive exchange controls, initially on residents but extended to non-residents after 1961. These controls on non-residents in turn resulted in a parallel exchange rate system which was abolished only in 1995. The transition to democracy in the 1990s, however, resulted in the nature of the relationship between capital flows, exchange control regulations and foreign exchange policies changing once more. The process of reintegration into world financial markets has provided opportunities for liberalising exchange control, and also new challenges for policymakers.","PeriodicalId":83269,"journal":{"name":"The South African journal of economic history : [journal of the Economic History Society of Southern Africa]","volume":"99 1","pages":"123 - 84"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2006-09-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"89919619","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
